CHICAGO , August 20. | Special Telegram to the UKK. | Wheat was dull but llrm to-day , closing steady at about unchanged prices. Cables were weak and there Is evi dence that a portion , If not all the clique , held California as be In ? pressed for sale In Liverpool. This brought out the Inevitable croak from New York bear exporting houses that the export demand was now about to cease entirely. The export demand has been about to stop dally for the last six months , but wheat has boon going out at the rate of 12,000,000 or 17,000,000 bushels a month Just the same , aim the stream pets no smaller. To-day's clearances of wheat from the At lantic ports foot up over 300,000 bushels , bo- Bides which 50,000 barrels of flour were cleared from Baltimore alono. Quotations held fairly steady most of the session and about on a level with yesterday's closing figures , though May oats weakened % c just at the close. In provisions there was no radical chance. Prices were about the same as yesterday. Fluctuations were conllned to a small range and the feeling was tolerably steady , though the tendency perhaps favored buyers a llttte. Trading was small and In the line of specu lation there was no Increase of activity to peak of. For January delivery , the only winter future receiving special attention , pork ranged at Sla.25t2.27k , lard at 86.55 and short ribs at 80.110. FlNANUIAti. NEW YORK , August 86. [ Special Telegram to the HER. I STOCKS The New lork stock market was active but Intensely nervous. The opening was ragged , but the undertone slightly better , duo In a measure to the covering of shorts and buying of St. 1'aul , Lake Shore , Heading and Louisville it Nashville. Small appreciations were noted on most of the good dividend-paying proper ties. The boar party stepped In on the rally aud began hammering the market , but at thn same time were said to have their brokers covering stocks all around the room ou the declines , and In a short time all the early ap preciation disappeared. Sensational rumors were more numerous , the bears apparently stirring up every kind of a story that could be of thu least possible use to them and mak ing the most of their advantages. Heading was attacked by the heavy traders and It was said that one of the largn Insiders In that roperty had been forced to liquidate a heavy line and prices declined 3 % per cent to 4S % but rallied to 50. The chief feature aside from Heading , were the weakness and de pression of the "fancies , " particularly the southern properties. The selling of the three last named stocks was attributed to the efforts to shake the Elijah Smith parties out , but the Impression prevailed that the raiders did not succeed. During the closing bour trading became heavier than at any other period ot the day , the shorts rushed to cover rapidly and fair rallies were recorded and on some of the favorite stocks the clos ing prices were about the same as the openIng - Ing and a number showed small gains over yesterday's close , Mortlnveatern being ; \ , St. Paul V , Now York Central Jf , Lackawauna & Hocking Valley and Missouri Pnoilic lt ° per cent The not declines were Itead- Inc l > f , Peorla , Decatur & Evansvllle 1 % , San Francisco preferred 4 , Hlchmond Ter minal 1 % , Oregon Transcontinental 3 and Oregon Hallway 6 , Lake Shore K , Western Union K and Manhattan Itf points.
