ber of terms ho served as state senator
inWisconsln , and used his Influence to
advance the good work in which ho Is en-
paged , As a worker for the cause of
clinriticB and corrections ho has labored
hard for seventeen years. To a UIE re

"Fifteen years ago. in Chicago , this
work was commenced. There were but
fourteen present , one being a lady , and
it was tlillicult to plnco the
matter in effective working order , but a
resolution was finally drawn un denounc
ing the county jails of Illinois ) , Wisconsin
and Michigan as nurseries of crime.
Four of tlii ! original promoters of the
system will bo present at this conference.
"Great progress has been inudu in tlio
work and tlio condition of those incar
cerated fur crime hits been much im
proved , while the methods of dispensing
charities litivo been altogether re
modelled , the idea now being promi
nently recognized that the needy classes
should bo encouraged to help themselves
rather than solicit aid. To this end pro
vision for work has been miulo where the
applicants are able to labor. Foreign
emigration Is a prominent subject in tuo
public mind , especially in the cast , and
must bo dealt with. Shipping insane for
eign paupers to the UnitoU States is
especially deserving of our considera
tion. This matter was presented at St.
Paul last year. One other question to bo
discussed Is the "Advancement of the
African and Indian races. Those com
prising tlio conference are members and
officers of the various state board of
oharitios and corrections as well rs inter
ested in the best methods to treat the
criminal and pauper classes. As to the
criminal classes wo believe the first con-
lideratlon should bo tbo reformation or
punishment of the criminal. Wo
fiavo views as to the Insane
not generally accepted , but which
will bo when understood thorougly. The
hopelessly insane should bo placed in
state Institutions. 'lucre will bo many
subjects discussed and papers read. "
To-morrow evening the conference will
bo hold in exposition hall. Governor
Thayer , Mayor Uroatch , President Max
Meyer , of the board of trade , John
M. Thurston , J. M. Woolworth
and ox-Governor Alvin Saundcrs will de
liver addresses of welcome. Responses
will be made by President Giles , Frank
11. Sanborn , of Massachusetts and Fred
II. Wines , of Springliehl , III.
The conference promises to bo larcoly
attended and productive of much prac
tical good in improving upon the many
advanced schemes already devised to
promote the objects involved. The ma
jority of the delegates will arrive to-day ,
ns it is understood that all the eastern
delegates collected at Chicago and will
como to Omaha in a body.
Rev. Edward Everett Halo , of Hoston ,
will deliver the sermon on Sunday at 3
p. m.
At the opening exorcises of the con-
fcronco a double quartette , consisting of
Messrs. W. S. Riggs , A. VanKuran. Nat
M. Urigham. Walter Wilkins. Dr. Wood-
burn , Harry Buckley , S. 15. Reed and W.
B. Downing , will render several appro
priate vocal pieces.

T. L. Bowman , of Lo Mars , right of
way agent of the Chicago & Northwest

Lake last evening.
Ono of the stations on the now branch
of the B ife M. west of Schuylcr has been
named Cushlng , after Mr. R. C. Gushing ,
of the railroad contracting firm of Cusli-
ing & Mallory , of this city.
On Monday nest the Chicago & North
western road will commence to lay iron
upon its graded line between Wahoo and
Schuyler a distance of thirty miles. The
road IH already bridged and the work
will bo pushed rapidly to completion , by
the contractors. Cushlng & Mallory.
A Mysterious Trunk.
The trunk of a vender of a patent
mcdlciuo called the "Chinese Se
cret11 was the cause of a sensation at the
B. & M. depot Tuesday evening. The trunk
omitted n most peculiar smell. Charley
Ilamollus , the baggageman , was satisfied
that it contained u dead body , and with
the horrid visions of a Maxwell-Prellor
tragedy dancing through Ins brain ho
called Ticket Acont Oleson and other
depot dignitaries who , after each In turn
taking a whin"at the trunk , gravely con
firmed llamcllus' suspicions ; the city
physician , Dr. Ralph , and other gentle
men of medical repute wcro summoned
and they , too , pronounced the odor as
ono familiar to them in the dissecting
room. The chief of police was summoned
and word sent to the coroner to come and
lake charge of the dead body. The
chief accompanied by two or
three officers appeared and orders were
given to watch for the coming
of tlio owners. A few minutes
later the innocent owner came rushing
into tin ) baggage room to see about his
check , when he was sternly confronted
by the chief , who apprised him of the
discovery of the dnad man , and ordered
him to open the trunk. Despite the ex
planations of the medicine man , he was
finally forced to comply. The ghastly news
had spread and a largo crowd had gath
ered. With bated breath thev watched
the turning of the key in the trunk and
the raising of the lid. Nothing could bo
seen but a large board fitting into the top
which completely hid the contents.
Amid the deathlike silence the chief
stepped forward and lifted the board ,
when there was disclosed , not the man'
glod trunk and limbs of a dead man , bul
a trunk full of neatly labeled packages.
The Gold Spell.
About 11 o'clock yesterday the cole
weather had reached its lowest point
and the temperature began to rise. Ac
cording to the signal service olliccrs this
was not a cold wave , but what they term
a cold spoil. A cold wave only comes
when the thermometer has alrcadj
reached 45 degrees and suddenly des
ccnds 15 decrees more in n short perioe
of time. Yesterday morning the min
imuni was 48 degrees at O'clock. Tues
day morning at the same hour it wa :
50 degrees. It appeared colder because
cause it was cloudy. The prcs

A Dangerous Avenue.

professional way. It seems that In Au
gust , 1830 , Mrs. Daniel Van Elton pur
chased a bill of goods from one Abra
hams , a Farnam street furniture dealer ,
for $159 , Notes were given for payment
with a chattel for security. A second
end bill of goods was purchased
with like bonds. Then Mrs. Van Etten
procured other articles , paying In Iho
meantime certain installments. A few
days ago her husband claimed that the
first mortgage was paid in full and that
the money had pot been applied ( o the
proper credit. Ho wanted the mortgage
cancelled and brought suit against Abra
hams before Justice Crawford of the
Seventh ward. A change of Tonuo was
taken to Justice Read of the Third ward.
The case came on for trial before the lat
ter official niut after the plaintiff's case
and part of the defendant's case had
been hoard , Mr. Van Etten had the case
dismissed without prejudice. Immedi
ately afterwards he commenced suit on be
half of Ins wife for the same cause ,
of action before Judge Crawford. Abra
hams , the defendant , became angry and
rcplovincd the goods. John Chesterfield
King , the constable , served the papers.
He was met by Michael Donahoc , a dep
utized constable from Judge Crawford's
court , who had order of arrest for Abra
hams , ot al. Then ensued a constabulary
war in which King came out victorious.
The coeds wcro taken and Iho Abraham
party was taken brforo Judge Road.
Then came Van Etten and demanded
they bo taken before Judge Crawford.
This Judge Reed refused to do and
the prisoners were discharged. Subse
quently Mr. Van Etten commenced a re
plevin suit on his own behalf for the fur
niture , but it Is doubtful it he will find
the property. Altogether this is the
labyrinthine legal case ever known in
these parts. _
The State Grunge.
The State Grange , through its presi
dent , has applied for and been accorded
a prominent place on the fair grounds for
a headquarters tout. The place will bo n
handy and welcome center lor the mem
bers of the body while in attendance at
; he fuir.
The Fair association has issued compli
mentary season tickets to all the clergy
men residing in the city , and hopes that
the tickets will be put to daily use.
The freedom of the grounds has
also been extended to the coining veteran
volunteer fireman of New York city , who
will spend three days here during fair
week. The invitation has been accepted
in behalf of the visitors by the Omaha
associalion of veteran volunteer fireman ,
but no day luts been chosen for the visit.
There will bo no public demonstration in
connection with the ufl'air.

An Expensive Sower.
It has cost the city $32,800 to mend the
breakage of the Tenth street sewer near
Brownell Hall. The person who had in
charge the digging and filling of the
sewer trench is responsible for the break-
ago. Instead of using dirt and sand to
fill the trench , manure , straw , stick and
kindred refuse were dumped in. The
settling of this padding below the pipes
has left them unsupported at places , and
naturally they have given way to the
strain from above.
Arinbrunt Found.
George J. Armbrust , the Cuming street
merchant , who mysteriously disappeared
about two weeks ago , was found Tues
day in Kansas Citv by Detectives Emery
and Dingman. He claims that he did not
know how ho reached that place , not
being aware of his traveling until he
woke up in Iho town. His brother has
gone to Kansas City and will return with
him to-day .

NEARLY DONE ,
The carpenters and painters who have for some weeks past had pos
session of our upper floors , are about finished , and we are happy to ,
state we shall in the near future , open all our floors for business. The
elegant passenger elevator we are now tmtting in will make access to
the upper floors easy. The tremendous increase in our business since
we opened , has induced us to make preparations for the coming sea
son on a gigantic scale. We are now having manufactured , and will
soon have on exhibition ) the handsomest and richest lines of Fall and"
Winter goods , and when everything is ready , we shall show a stock of
mens' and boys' clothing second to none in the country.
In addition to our clothing and furnishing goods , we shall , in a few
days , open a complete line of hats. This department will occupy the
rear of the second floor , and will contain a larger stock than any hat
house in the city. As the goods will be all new , we shall only show
the latest styles , and we shall sell them with the same low margin oi
profit as we do all our other goods.
