THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : F&IDAY. AUGUST 19 1887 A DRAGGING WHEAT MARKET , Trading Light , With Prices Averaging Only a Little Better. CORN STRONG AND ADVANCING. An Almott I'caturclcM DAT In Pro vision Hpcculatlun Heavy He- cclpta of Conic General Market Quotation * . CHICAGOIMIODUCE MAHKET. CIIICAOO , Aucust 18. ISpeclal Telegram ( o the UKK. | Wheat dragged along heavily to-day. Trade was light and prices averaged a little better than yesterday , though a com parison of the closings shows a small depre ciation In values. September wheat opened at C'Jj/c , mined at tMX& Xc and closed at CftClte. ( October opened at 71c , ranged at 71 ® 70 c and closed at the Inside. Decem ber opetied at 74 > , 'c , ranged at 74VaTJ ( c and closed at the bottom. At no time during the day was there special activity , and outside market news was dull and uninteresting. Cables were quiet and noclmnge In the situa tion abroad is mentioned. Private ad vices of line European harvest prospects and brilliant weather continue to bo received and circu lated , but It Is noticed that Atlantic ports clearances keep UD and a renewal ot the movement from the Paclllc coast Is also ob served. Corn was strong and after rather a tame opening advanced # c or such a matter and closed K@c higher than yesterday. May opened at 45c , sold as low as 44c and as high as 45c and closed at 45c. Septem ber opeiied at 40Xc , ranged at 40 > < c low and 41 > tfi 41c high aud closed at 41 'c. Octo ber opened at 41-Vc , ranged at 41 > { @ 42c and closed at 41J c. Speculation was on a larger Hcalethau vesterda ) . Uecelpts continue mod erate neither very heavy nor very light and generally seem rather to fnvor the bears than the bulls , but In bplto of that prices are on the upturn. Farmers appear to bo getting over their fright and commission merchants , through their country correspondents , are re ceiving better reports ot the condition of crops , llcjond any question there Is a lar.e amount of old corn In the country and unless all evidence Is to be discredited there is a fair prospect of n very considerable yield even In the "burnt districts , " though over large areas the damage seemed tohave been be yond repair. "Old Hutch" was es pecially active to-day nnd whenever parties supposed to bo operating for him desisted trout buying thu market de veloped a tendency to take the back track. Operations were on a fairly satisfactory scale , and corn , in speculative interest , led wheat Lake charters to-day Included 103,000 bushels of wheat and 1)0,000 ) bushels ot corn. The estimated receipts tor to-morrow are 80 cars ot w heat , 260 cars of corn and tf)0 ) cars of oats. oats.Thero There was rather a tame and uninteresting tnarkut for oats , and the strength developed in speculative values was attributable al most entirely to the higher range ot the corn market. Trading was largely local , as there were no outside orders to speak of. and business scarcely reached an average volume. In provisions the day was almost feature less. In the way of speculation as well as In the movement of cash property there was no activity at any time to awaken any Interest , aud from the opening to thu close theio was no unusual development to speak of. For the dllferent deliveries traded In prices aver aged a little lower than yesterday , thougl the actual changes , as shown by theclosltiKS. were unimportant. For cash delivery pork was quoted at S1G.OO ( < { 17.00 and lard and short ribs at September prices. Hot Septem ber Inrd sold at 80.40(80.45 ( and short ribs a 7.t > 2 > i@7.lK ) , closing at 86.40 and S7.1X ) re spectively. August lard and short ribs were nominally the same as September , while Oc tober lard ranged 7&10c higher and Octo ber short ribs the same to 5c under the name month. January , the only active wintoi month , closed at 812.35 for pork , 50.57ii foi lard and 80.32 tor short ribs. CHICAGO I/IVE STOCK. The purchase of $3,500,000 4 > V per cent bonds by the treasury at 100 44-100 was a disappointment to tto itrcot , an It was expected that double that amount would bo taken. The release ot an even 82,500,000 , the payment ot 816,000,000 In pensions this month , liberal Imports of gold and an easy money marketdld not stim ulate buying of stocks and the Impression prevailed that the elloct of the bonds pur chased had been discounted by the advances of the two previous days. Thoaa who bought itocks were anxious to sell them , and this ( las j of Eelllugx coupled with the fact thai there Is noconccutrated effort on the part of the bulls , made the board aggressive , and several largo traders raided the market rather savagely , using St. Paul and Missouri Pacific as leaders , and forced down prices A and 1 point respectively.
