( Special TelcRrntn totlieDKE.I-Speculatlon Is getting out of corn nnd Into \vlioat once more. Trade In wheat wns on a largely increased scale to day and the market is feeling Hie ctTuct of growing popularity. An advance of % % % t established and tlio last quotations were the best of the season. September \\heai opened at % , advanced to 70 ! c and during the last two hours of the trading session , ranged between 70c and 7o ; c , closing at 70J @ 7oftc. ; October oi > oncd at 71J c , advanced to Tic , thereafter ranged at 7172c and closed nt 72c. December opened at 7-lKc , ranged nt WJjWy c and closed at the top. There was good local buying nnd the tonu of the other domestic markets was better. Corn was dull and drooping , and the tone was one of weakness. Thcru were occasional rallies , but the demand wai uusually short lived and the bearish spirit would soon bo In control. The market Is dally getting nar rower. The country Is still long and so are a few loading local operators for largo lines , but the majority of active room traders seem to have taken the profits at a higher level and to be now ranged on the other side. Shippers report a look UD In the demand for cash corn and singularly enough the receivers are be ginning to anticipate an Increased forward movement from the Interior. Kains have measurably relieved thn alarm that prevailed throughout the agricultural districts and property Is bolng marketed with greater free dom. Fluctuations to-day were within limits and the closings mark a decline of @ % c as compared with yesterday , September losing the most and May the least , the two months assuming the same relative positions as on Thursday. Opening trades In Sep tember wore at 4Uc in October and May at 45 } < c. September advanced to 41c and worked off to 40J < c , closing there. October ranged at 4241 ic , closing at the Inside , and May ranged at 4GK@4 XCi closing at 45 c. May Is by far the most active month on the list , wltn trade la September and October about on a par. There was developed an oaslcr feeling all around In the market for oats , the depression In corn , liberal receipts of oats and more or less realizing toward the close by longs all helped to weaken values , and the closing prices for futures were at the bottom for the day and M@c below those of yesterday. Provisions closed the week hi a quiet man ner. Trading to-day showed no Improve ment over the past two or ttreo days , yet the feeling was strong , nnd , barring n break of lOc In year pork , l"Kc In January pork , 8Kc In November and Jan uary lard and 2Kb in January short ribs , changes In prices were unimportant Short ribs for August , September and October were tven advanced 2 > i@5c for September de livery. Lard sold at SG.07X@C.GO and short ribs at $8.00(33.05 ( , closing at 80.57K and $8.02 } { respectively. August lard and short ribs wore held at September prices , while October lard was 7X@tOc and October short ribs the same to5c liiither than September. January closed at 813.87W for pork , 86.77 for lard , and 80.C2K for short ribs. CHICAGO LIVE STOCK. The market to-day was a dragging one , but exhibited surprising strength. There was no foreign buying and almost an entire absence of western orders. The ease with which the stocks went up frightened thn small army of shorts into cov ering and resulted in an advance on the en tire list , extending to 2X'points. A bad bank statement was expected , as the banks were known to have lost funds during the week , but none looked tor a decrease in the reserve of S3,188D25 , and in deposits of 80,477,500. Market Glonnines. Prices on dried fruits nro very linn. Canned fruits continue to advance. There is claimed to bo n very heavy falling off In the tobacco crop this season. The dry wether has nffccted the cucumber crop to such an extent that nn advance Is looked for m the pickle market. Prices on tobacco here have continued about steady durliig the past few days , ex cepting Drumuiond ripoarliead and the T. J. brand , which liaVe advanced 4c nud Gc re spectively , tvi 5 ' The lumberHnarket is firm , but prospects would seem to Javor steady prices for sonic time to come. , iTho great amount of build- lug , especially railroad construction , has kept the mills employed in gettlnz out largo tim bers , and the supply of yard lumber , while it is adequate for tuo present demand , is not large. The Jobbing trade m coal Is not starting In as rarly as last season. A good many would- be buyers are holding off on account of the hlzh prices. The Delaware , Lackawanna & Western railway company , which bandies a very large proportion of the hard coal , has ordered Its representatives not to take anj more orders 'for' ' coal tills month , showlns that they are Uhlid in tbelr orders and that tbere is no surplus output.
