CHICAGO I' MAHKET.
CHICAGO , August . [ Special Telczram
to the UKK.I IhlK was another day ut grout
ipcctilatlvo activity In corn. The market
opened lc olT for September and Ic on" lor
October and May. A world of long corn
came out on stop orders aud values slumped
on * & @Jic ; May dropped further and faster
than any other delivery. Within live min
utes ot the opening September corn was
down to Wife , October to 40 c and May to
4Iic. From yesterday's last ( inotatlons there
was recorded a break of IJfe on Septumbur
and May , and IJtfc on October. Corn sold
cheaper the llrst live mtniites of thu session
than It could bo had for at any
other time during the day. 'Ihe
city was vlslt''d by a llttlo
thowcr this morning , and the half
matured belief took possession ot the crowd
that It was raining cvurywliur. Ono of the
llrst bits of news toarrlvo wns that two and
livc-olKhtlis Inches had fallun In Leaven-
worth und that It was ruining In other local
ities In Kansas and Nebraska nnd western
Missouri , but to-day wore away without tid
ings of general storms. Occasional cloud
bursts and local showers weru the best that
could bo heard of and It was voted that this
sort of thing wasn't giving tlio relief pr.tK'd
tor. The change In the temper of the spoon
latlvo crowd was sudden , stud the ellect waste
to bo seen In the subsequent gradual and
Bti-ady Improvement In the values. Thuro
were shaip fluctuations in prices , of course ,
but thu general course ol values was in tlio
direction of n higher range. The best prices
were obtainable just befoto the close ,
when September was quoted at lOJfc and
May at 45 'c. The last quotation
were 4UJfc for September , ll'fc for October ,
and 4rc tor May. The volume of trade to-day
was probably greater than any tiny stnco
speculation cot Into this cereal. Tlio esti
mated receipts to-morrow are -vl ! > cars.
Wheat rnlt-d weak and lower , with only
moderate speculative buslnespassing. . The
market oKiied | % @Kc off , and crept still
lower during thu urst half hour of the trad
ing. September settled from f9Vc to rate ;
October.from 71j cto7U cf < 270J canrt Ueceu-
bcr , fiom 74Jfc to 7ic. Ttie market hung
heavily around thn bottom throughout tlio
greater part of the session , but rallied along
toward the close and left elf about whereIt
started in. The news most talked over was
the termlnitlon of the Cal fornla corner , or
rather , the compromise between the lonss
and shorts , by which both sides are lot out of
an awkward predicament , without ruinous
losses or the precipitation of a panic. 1'ubllc
cables quote the foreign markets us dull and
anil easy. Private advices represent Liver
pool and London to bo badly demoralised
over the San Francisco affair and the prospect
of a big lot of California wheat being un
loaded upon lirltlsh buyers. September
wheat ranged at CWnO'ji.jc mm closed ut fii'J ' < c.
October rungcd 70 ? @ 7UJ c low nnd 72Vc ;
high , closing at71c. Deccmoer ranged 74
@ 74Jifc , closing at the outside.
There was only moderate activity In the
market for oats and prices wore Irregular
find unsettled , closing at K"N' ( < c higher for
September and October delivery and easier
for May. At thu opening buyers held elf and
the tecllng was vury weak , but at a frac
tional decline a better dcm.iiid prevailed and
thu recovery was about as rapid as the do-
cllnu had been.
In thu uiovislon trade a quiet state of af
fairs existed. In futures , as well as tn cash ,
property trading loaned to tlio slow orders.
< and the dixy's business was both light and
leatnrelcM. Thu product , however , was well
supported , nnd for .short ribs for near deliv
ery prices weni advanced 2J ( Jt7ijC. L-ird
was 2c easier for August and Sci > -

For September lard sold at f 1.07 } ( < 40.70 and
closed at 0.70. September short ribs ranged
at 37.07J@S.07V niitl rested at S8.07K.
