CHICAGO pnonucc : MARKET.
CHICAGO. An ust 3. [ Special Tclcernm
to the tints. I Corn was excited and higher
on tliii curb yesterday Afternoon , but the
opening this morning was ' ( SYc under ycs-
terdny'g closlnu' rano on reports ot rain in
Kansas and Nubniskn. Commlislon mur-
chants weiu the llrst to hear of tliu rain from
their country customers , but tlie nuncral
crowd "uaught on" pro ntly and the result
was a combined attack on tlio market No
rains were heard of anywhere else over the.
com district except Kansas and Nebraska ,
but showers In these states furnished thn
loiriH an excuse for unloading their holdings
and the bears for raiding the market. I'rlmo
telegraphs from 1)wight that "thoRcncral sit
uation Irom Ohio to Kansas on corn was
never worse than at thu present moment. "
.Hundreds of dispatched nnd letter * from
rvcry ipmrtcr ot the "burnt" area were re
ceived testifying to the same state of things.
Nevertheless the market was rlpo for a , reac
tion from tliu r.iiigi ; attained on the bulge.
The transactions tor the day footed up an
enormous aggregate and an average shrink-
In of l'f@lBC as compared wlt'i ' yesterday.
That the market did not break all to pieces
under thu pressure of the olf'-rliKS Is pioof
that the general public Is under It with both
shoulders. I'aekers , too , were notable strong
nnd linn friends of corn. It Is commonly
believed that as a class the packers keep very
well posted on thu condition of thu corn
crop , Trading In September began at
tlc. The lilllim ot numberless small
orders lirmed the market at the
outset and 41c was obtained.
Then the market yielded , not being arrested
until 40)i'c was reached. Dining the last two
hours of the session September ranged 40 % @
414c , the market hardening perceptibly all
the while until just before the close , when It
was raided down at 40j c on dispatched an
nouncing that rains had progressed fus far
eastward as Kansas City. October started In
nt 42fc , sold up toJ'JKc and on * &c , ad
vancing to 4'Jjfc and closing at 41c. . No
vember opened at 43c , hold up to 43 , ' c , oil to
41c , closing at 4-'n. There wns a very lartro
trade In May. which opened at 45'c , ad
vanced to 4r % ( < i4rC { , broke oil to 44c , turnIng -
Ing and advancing to 4. " > % c. There was a
rattling trade between 45c and ' 5c , and
heavy buying by parties was Hie feature ot
the day. Toward the end of the session May
eased oil with the rest of tliu market and
closed at 44'fc.
Wneat was active early. The tendency of
values was downward and prices closed J < @
Jfc lower than yesterday , and very near tlio
inside ligures of thu present year und uencr-
ntlou. The ntnrtlng trades In September
wereat7u ; < c. The market slid down Kc
more In sympathy with corn , Soptcuibfr
touching fi'JJfc , October In the meantime iro-
Ing from TJ' ' c to71 * e , and December from
75 , ' c to 74c. trade in the last named option
being lidit. Values woiked nearly back to
the openini ; range and the tonu of the mar
ket was lirm. but It wilted during the last
fifteen minutes of the session , tlio closing
prices being ncarl ? at thu Inside of the day ,
nt 74 c for December.
Speculation In oats was only moderately
active and there was a Hllght reaction
from yesterday's bulge under less urcent
demands from the shorts and In sympathy
with the decline in corn. The market opened
pretty linn , but the closing ligures were at
the bottom tor all futuies this side of May ,
there being a decline In September and Oc
tober of ) fc. The linal closings lor August
and May were Mdfe olf.
Provisions were unfavorably affected by
the reaction in corn. Next winter's deliv
eries , which are beginning to receive consid
erable attention , were again titronger , but
In near futures , months embraced In the
summer packing season , the feeling was eas
ier. For August , the decline suffered in
Bhort ribs was 1-i c , for September , inc. and
for October , 17&c. Lard was relatively
stronger than short ribs , though October
closed a trlllo easier , with September un
changed and August only U } c higher. The
year and January pork showed an advancn
at the close of lO gific. and January lard and
ehort ribs of r . September , tlio pivotal
month , sold at 80.70f0.77K ( for lard , and
88.00QS.17X for short ribs , closing at S0.72X
00.75 and 88.00 respectively. August Ian ;
ranged lO lUKc under and October
over September. October short ribs sold nt
September prices , while August was quoted
6@7Kc under September. The year pork
closed at 81ii.ar ) . January pork at 81B.7.r. , No
vember lard ut 3 .i"K ! , January lard at S0.80 ,
nnd January short ribs at $0.45.
