hour's time. The market recoveicd slowly
after the break , but by the end of the session
nearly the whole of the decline had been re
covered , and the net loss on the day averaged

December at t > % c , The market appears to
ground with a fair den roe of lirmness on the
public faith In the intrinsic value of wheat at
about the current range of pilcos , and rald-
.Ini ; attempts are not attended with a measure
of success any more than sporadic cllorts to
run llttlo bull movements. In brief , there
are no sensational features to the market
these dins to warrant anticipations of un
usual speculative excitement on either sldn.
Corn was active and prices averaged K@
% c higher. Speculative operations concen
trated largely In September and May de
liveries , September being the favorite month.
The opening trades were : i7J < c for Auvttst ,
! (8X ( ° for September , 39o for Octol > cr , and 41c
for December. The market worked up X@
* < c without effort and In face of strong local
opposition , "Old Hutch" and his following
lighting every step of the advance. August

During the last two hours of the session the
market held steady and strong , but final
quotations wore at a concession from tlin
b toftlieday , viz. : HS'fc for August , 8'Jc
tor September , W ) @ : i9 o for October , and
4l } c for May. The volume of speculation
wan largo , and outside orders were numerous
and gonntally to buy. Crop damage reports
are again on the Increase and bcattcri'd ,
thouuh local showers makes the Held of nnws
from the rorn belt more or less streaked.
A steady feeling prevailed In oats and
fluctuations In the speculative market were
within a K range. In the early part of the
day prices bagged fractionally , but the lost
ground was recovered and the closing quota
tion ! were fully up to those of yesterday.
There was just a fair trade , b"fng mostly
loon I and to a larger extent In October and
May than usual.
1'rovlslons were again without special
change. In short ribs and lard there was
more or loss doing In the way of transferring
trades for August to later months , but even
In these articles the new busi
ness transacted was unimportant The
outside public seemed to take no
interest to sneak of in the market , and with
professional operators unusual Indiffer
ence prevailed. Still the feeling was strong
and for lard and short ribs the closings were
about the same as yesterday , or at J0.57H for
August lard , 87.05 for August short Jibs ,

7U@10c under September. Pork was dull at
817.00 for cash , Sll.UO for the year , and S11.70
for January. Lard sold for November and
January at 80.56 and short ilbs for January
at 80.00

ber on sale the percentage of prime or even
useful natives was lleht. Taken altogether
there was barely 4,000 good cattle on sale ,
and these , or such as exactly suited buyers
for shipment , sold substantially higher , a
large number going at S4.40@-i.SO , a tew at
84.CO@4.fH. and one or two lots at 8 .70 4.75.
These were the top prices for top stock. Of
course a number of useful cattle sold at 54.00
(34.25 ( , and then down to $3.75 and below.

liquidation scorned to be the general motive.
The beats were on topand the bulls were dis
heartened. Louisville & Nashville was at
tacked without resistance and fell to coy.
Among the Itotnsof personal gossip of pome
Interest was one that Cammack , who Is at
Newport , was short of coalers and grangers.
Another one was that the New York Life
Insurance company had been buying Dela
ware , Lackawana & Western , and the Vanderbilt -
derbilt btocks. For the first time In several
weeks Cammack's commission men admit
iloltiK a fair business One handled 2,500
shares yesterday at Kc. and two others
bought over 5.00U shares Heading , Lake Shore
and St. 1'aul for customers. Still operators
were afraid of the September money market.
It Is probably true that London orders to sell
were numerous yesterday , but arbitragers
allege that the fact was owing to a hammer
ing In foreign markets by American opera

man , "the Sioux City & Pacllio asks 827 to
haul a car of hogs from Sloan , la. , to Omaha ,
and only 856 trom Sloan to Chicago. Sloan
Is 500 miles from Chlcaco and only seventy
miles trom Omaha , liesldes that they make
very poor connections to Omaha , loadlnc
there at 0 p. m. and not arriving here until

tion of Iowa prefer to come hero if the rail
