the UKK. I Tlio wheat market dratted. The
opening and closlDK quotations \vcroat about
tbo same range as Indicated by the closing
quotations yesterday. A season or weakness
was witnessed soon after the opening , wheat
noftenltiK In sympathy with corn. The light
trade that passed In the pit was devoid of
special significance. The carriers were the
most active , tliolr operations being confined
almost wholly to buying for August and
selling for September delivery. Some of the
more expert among them tried to scalp out
an extra j c in making new contracts , but
the dllTurenco averaged a scant 2c between
August and September most of the time.
August opened at 70c , sold down to 10X&
70)ic , and advanced to 7o ; e , closing at TUj Q
70c. September opened at 72 c , declined
to 72c , advanced to 73c , and closed there.
October , In which there was an ox-
coptloiul trade , ranged 74@74c ,
and closed at 74M@74c. There
was a llttlu more llfo In December ,
which opened nt 77c , sold olt c , advanced
to 77J6C , and closed at 77 c. Very llttlo was
doing In May , whlcn closed at Si c. There
was a large and generally satisfactory troilo
In corn to-day. There was no plunging , and
BO far as could bo .seen none of the heavy
operators \\ero doing much. An army of
brokers and commission merchants were
kept busy filling scattering orders , and the
wires wore not permitted to cool. The openIng -
Ing was weak and the tendency of values
was decidedly downward during the early
part ot the session. The Initial trades were
at a sheer depreciation from yesterday of
? @ % c , and the tone of the market was soft
nt the ( mutations. August sold from 87&c to
B7e , September from 37Jfc to b7c , De-tuber
from 88c to U7XC , and May from 40c to 3'J e.
The prevailing sentiment was that the ad
vance had been premature , and that
the natural level of values was to bo found at
about the point from which the recent ad
vance started. Everybody had ro-
tiorts of rain In central and southern Illi
nois , and selling orders from districts that
had been previously rained on Increased.
Nevertheless the conservative element could
not really bring itself to believe that the tor-
ride heat of last wcok had not left Its wither
ing and blighting mark on the corn crop ,
and a spirit of caution restricted the offerIngs -
Ings to such an extent that when the specula
tive shorts undertook to cover they found
themselves obliged to bid the market up to
obtain property. The crowd had swung
recklessly from one extreme to the other , and
as a natural result of overselling the market
reacted strongly Jtfc , remained hrm through
out the last hour or two of the trading ses
sion , and closed nearly at the top. August
nold up to : t7c and closed there. September
advanced to S8Yc , nnd closed at ic.
October advanced to SS&cand closed at SS c.
Doecmbor advanced to 88 > c and closed
nt : ! 8Kc. May ranged : i'Jffi40Xc and left off
ntJO c. The closing range Is almost identi
cal wlththatof yestei day except for cash and
August , which show an Improvement of
jfe. The strength In August was ono of the
notlconblo features of the trading. Septem
ber was the most active month and an In
creased business In May Is reported.
Only a moderate speculative business Is re
ported to-day In oats , theio being but few or
ders either way nnd not much Inclination on
the part of local operators to branch out
August oats wore oilered very freely early ,
and this , together with the depression In
cash now No. B oats , caused a weak opening.
The silent shrinkage In valiiBs , however ,
was recovered , and the closing quotations
for futures were steady at about yestoiday's
latest bias.
In the provision pit them was no decided
disposition to put prices down. The con
tinued llbarnl marketing ot hogs , accom
panied by another nnavy decline in the same ,
made the feeling , of course , weak ; yet , un
der the circumstances , the trade appeared to
bo able to command good support. Lard was
bought freely by one of the heaviest general
operators on the floor , while for short ribs
the demand was both general and active.
The market , all things consldorcd , was
remarkably strong , though for lard prices at
the close snowed a decline Iroin yesterday of
2X@5c , and short ribs of 5c. For August
delivery lard sold at Jfl.52X@fl.57X , and short
ribs at S7.J7Xi47.76. ( ( The same month closed
at 80.55@0.57H for lard , and at 97.7JX tor
short ribs , lloth September lard and short
ribs ranged lOc over August. For Novumber
delivery lard sold at 0.55 , for December
short ribs at 55 UO , and for January lard at
80.70 , and short ribs nt 85.00 ® 5.95. Cash
pork was $17.00 ; the year § 11.50 , and Janu

big run yesterday was a decline of about lOc
on good cattle and 15c on undesirable stock.
Taking a lot of line distillery-fed steers , that
avorajod over 140U Ibs , as comparison , that
Bold at 93.05 , against 94.05 on Tuesday , the
decline equals lOc In that quality. To-day
there were not over 7,000 natives In fresh
arrivals. The remainder , about 4,000 , were
Ttixans. There was rather a scarcity of
suitable natives , and as a consequence that
port sold steady , yet 15@20c lower than Mon
day. There are about 4,000 Texans on the
marknt , Vahtes are 15@25o lower
than on Monday. Native butchers' stock
Is as low as at any time. There
were no new features in the stocker and
