the UKK.I Wheat dragged to-day and there
was a weak undertone to the market. Cables
were discouraging and lower. Only a light
export trade at New York to-day was re
ported. The receipts of new wheat at pri
mary winter wheat markets are on the In
crease and the public Is neglecting the bull
side of the deal. Harvest returns from the
winter wheat country do not quite corno uu
to expectations , and pluvious estimates atid
reports of damage In the northwest are again
becoming radical now that ttie Immodlato
effects of the recent rains hare worn away.
The freer arrivals of Indian wheats and the
belief that the California wheat now held by
the syndicate will soon be for sale , are
doubtless thii prime causes of foreign weak
ness , though advices from San Francisco
that the year wheat Is quoted at 31.03 In that
market may bo accepted as proof that up to
lo-day the syndicate has held Its grip on Its
wheat. At this point the weather continues
to bo oppressively hot , yet , strange to
cay , there was less gossip afloat rela
tive to the condition of gram In store
than there was yesterday- Trade In
the wheat pit was light and price changes
were by no means startling. Indeed thu
range was narrow , vl/ : J { @ ? c. August
opened at 71c , sold off to 7 < % c , advanced to
71c , swung between 70J (37lc ( lor an hour or
more , and closed at 70 e , n loss of % c as
compared with jesterday. September ranged
exactly the same as August.keeplng 2c above
It and closlnr atTJ ? fc. October started In
late at 74tfc , ranged 7IV < @ 745 < c and closed at
74 } c. Oecumber ranged 77 > ( ai77 c and
closed at 77 } < fc.
A good limltiess was transacted In the corn
pit , and the tone last developed was one of
weakness. The market opened rather firm
and a shade higher on a continuation of
drought IIHWS and scare talk about lieht local
Blocks. The sentiment thus engineered
stimulated Inquiry to a point that carried
over , Intelligence drifted in that local show
ers were mitigating the drought to some ex
tent , and simultaneously thn shorts found
comfort In the thought that even though
local stocks were lluhl there was plenty of
grain within easy reach that could bo
had In case of a pinch. Nebraska ,
Kansas , Iowa and Missouri send in
reports of brilliant corn crop prospects , and
the gloomy cloud that has been hanging low
over thn nit for some days was observed to
have a silver lining. The market sold olT 3'c (
and closed soft at a rane of prices a mere
shade above the inside figures realized.
Aiiijust rested at 30c. September at 37 % ( 1
K7Jfc , anif October at 37fc. A rattling busi
ness was done throughout the scsslou.
The speculative trade In oats to-day was
rather quiet , the business , nil told , being
under an average volume. In early dealing
prices were stronger and about Jfc higher
than yesterday's closings , but subsequently
nn easier tone prevailed and the Improve
ment was lost , tlie market closing steady.
Most of the trading was in August and Sep
tember.
In the provision nit the day was some
what uneventful , tnlluenced by advices
from the stock yards , where ho s were in
moderate supply and higher. The opening
for lard and short ribs was strong and at ma
terially higher prices. In short ribs the first
sales recoided tin advance ot lOc , and in lard
7c. l.ard subsequently lost a portion of the
appreciation and shoit ribs the whole of It ,
yet dining the day both articles showed de
cided strength. For August delivery short
ribs sold from 88.30 down to SS.20 , which was
the closing bid. The range for September
short ribs wan from $8.40 down tot.29 ,
and for October from S8.22K down toSSU7j .
October rested at 58.17K , anit September at
8.830. August lard sold at SG.67MQ0.70 , and
September at 80.750.bO. the former month
closing at the lowest price named bid , and
nary , with the near deliveries entirely nom
inal.

to-day were lighter than for some days past ,
the run for the week amounts to about 7,000
more than last weok. The general market
to-day was without much change , but the
nioro desirable kinds ot cattle sold lather
stronger. Some salesmen said It was easier
to sell cattle , but not at any quotable ad
vance. The prices for cattle are about 25c
lower than they were one week age. Many
corn fed rattle are selling as low as 93.iO@
3.50. A Plttsburg man bought sixteen cars
of cattle at 83.lO ( < i4.20 , averaging 25c
less than last Friday , and ho said
the highest priced cattle were the

expect success In this deal. It Is said that
the syndicate scut $2,500,000 to England to

consummating the deal. When the syndi
cate has formally taken possession of the
property closer iclattons between Heading
and Baltimore & Ohio will probably bo ar
ranged. The Baltimore &Ohlo deal Is now
out of the market In addition to the above
was the report that the Baltimore & Ohio
had leased the Cincinnati , Hamilton & Day
ton for 10 per cent ot the earnings on com
mon and 4 per cent on preferred stock. Ives ,
however , pronounced It a canard.
