THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : ONDAY. JULY II. 1887. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , A Combination of Oircnmstanoea Causes the Wheat Market to Strengthen. PRICES TAKE AN UPWARD TURN. A Largo Decrease Expected In the Vlftlhlo Supply Corn Opens "Weak Hut Closes Better General Qnotatton * . CHICAGO pnonuoK MAIIKET. CUICAOO , July 0. [ Special Telegram to the Ur.K.1 A prospective decrease In the vlslblo supply of anywhere from 3OuOUOO to 4,000,000 bushels , further press and private advices of crop damage In the northwest and southeast , the receipt ot the government crop report for July , Indicating n small reduction in the winter wheat average and a drop of 8 points in spring wheat as compared with thu last monthly bulletin , were causes that com- blnrd to stimulate the \vlioat market to-day and prices closed at an advance of ? @J Ct July , August and December being the strongest months In the list General rains foil last night and this morning and the market oponeued weak nnd declining on weather news , but the shipping statistics were so very ( strong that they could not full to exert a strong influence on values. The local shorts very generally figured as buyers , and the scalping element took the long Bide. There was a promiscuous scattering of Itnostment demand all through the session , nnd alter the lirst halMiour the market failed to show more than momentary weakness at any stnue of proceedings. July wheat sold at the beginning at 70c nnd closed at 71)fc. August stiirtoJ tit 72 > ic , iccedcd to 72Q72Xc , ana advaiicid to73c , where It closed. Sep tember rangul 7tn74Kc low and 75c high , sine at 74ft7ic. ( December ranged 7 ! > 2fo low and TOXO'UKc high , and rested at the Dutsldo. The volume of trading was rather above the average , though no concentratrd action on cither side was noticeable. Thu tone of the torolgn markets was rather Bteadlcr and it Is observed that whiln the old World consumers are Industriously blocking nnd whittling down values , they are buying heavily of American cheap wheat and null ing It out of the country ns fast as possible. .During the past week next to nothing has arrived at primary points , and the scattering of the vlslblo stoekK has been going on nt u noticeable rate. From this city nlone , In live days , 1,103,000 hushel.s have been shipped , and from the Atlantic ports during the .same period 2,200,000 bushels have boon cleared , nn Increase over last week of 800,000 bushels. The local stocks will prob ably show a decrease of about lriOO,000 bush els , and the visible supply ( igures next Mon day ahonla not be far from 30,000,000 bushels. There was a weak and lower opening to the corn market on the weather , more rain having fallen during the past twenty-tour hours throughout the west. The starting sales were at sejtfc for August. : t7J < c for Sep tember , 37c tor October , and S'.i&c for May. Thin was h@ % > ! oelow yesterdav's closing. Under the face of speculative offerings the market sagged Xc more for nil futures this side of May , but at the decline there were Increased buying orders. The shorts were disposed to cover , and when those who had sold early tried to buy in the market firmed up on them , recovering within a funall traction all of the ground lost. August closed at 3fl @ : : cVcSeptember ntW'i'WlST ' c , October at 37Kc. and May at 89c. The break In the Now York market on the hot corn scaio had no perceptible olfect upon values here. The local cash trade wns ngaln quiet to-day , with not much doing. The shipments for the week , how ever , largely exceed the lecelpts , and there has been a reduction In local stocks during that time of about 1,000,000 bushel. To-day's speculative business was of fair average volume , though It partook largely of nn even- In g-up character usually witnessed on Sat urday. Oau were without special features in the * peculatlvo market. Although samples wore lower , Mo. 9 cash Itn store and seller the month were pretty liruily held. August and September fluctuated within a range of Jfr , anil closed # c lower than yesterday at 25Kc and 96&o respectively. May oats closed steady and unchanged at 81c. All futures were a little lower around the opening and speculative trading for the day was light. \ The provision market recovered a little from jMterday'a apathy. More general in terest was manifested , nnd while there wns no continued life , the business transacted was noticeably larger. Speculation , as usual , won confined to short ribs and lard , which were Inclined to act sympathetically and both of which ruled higher. In lard the es tablished advance was I0@12 } c , and In short ribs , 7M10c. The closings for these articles wore at or near the best prices obtained , while the openings wore , M a rule , at Inside figures. August nnd September were the ac tive deliveries. Future pork was Inactive , cash being quoted at S17.00. CHICAGO IJ1V13 STOCK. CHICAGO , July 0.
