llio UKK.I There was a good dviuaud for
spot room for grain by the lake to-day , but
there was plenty of tonnage lieru and moro
arrivals were anticipated , and rates were , l c
pur bushel under those of yesterday , which
weru regarded as exceptionally low. Itoom
was taken at SJf c for corn and 4a for wheat
to Huir.ilo. Agents placed a liberal amount
for corn and wlieut and a small chatter cacti
of oats and tlax were reported. Tim engage
ments included : 'Jooo bushels of wheat , 00.-
000 bushels of corn , 31,000 bushels of oats and
2.'i,000 bushels of llax seed. There was very
little In outside reports to Influence trading
In grain In Clilc.iKo to-day. At .Vow York
early the markets were stronger for wheat ,
and at St. Louis they were weaker. The
weather map did not show any present
rainfall to speak of and operators again
begin to regard Iho ciop situation as fines-
tlonnblu except for corn. The ( Inner feeling
which prevailed in the lending grain markets
yesterday was only partly sustained hero
to-day. Compared with the closing prices at
1 o'clock yesterday thu prices at noon to-day
were } { c better for August wheat , steady for
August corn and } { G bettor for August oats.
Other futuies wcro relatively the same. The
highest prices nf the day were reached about
11 a. in. , when trading Nvas model att-ly ao
tlvc , but dullness and lower priced came to
Kcthcr before the close.
Wheat enjoyed natural activity for a few
hours to-day , perhaps the bust fueling shown
In that pit since the great collapse of June
14 and 15. Thu spirit of wrecking was not so
manifest us usual ot late , and operators en
gaged In buying as If there was a better talth
In grain itself , Prices stllTuncd quite notice
ably and for a tinin there w.ts quite an eager
ness to take wheat for August and Septem
ber delivery. August opened % c better than
the close 7 c and went up to ' ? ( c , the
highest. September also opened { { c bolter
than the closing price yosterdav mm sold up

ctowd neouied to think those good prices to
unload small amounts and the result was a

ments.
Trading In corn during the early hours was
at prices about on a level with tbo clo o of

with little or no change In prices as compared
with yesterday , highland handy cattle had
the rail. Some salesmen were of the opinion
that light and grassy cattle sold a shade-
stronger and that heavy steers sold a shade
lower. Then there wore others that hold the
reverse as about the state ot the market.
.Buyers for Kastiuan , of Now York , for Mon
roe and others were making up train loads
down as low as | : i.V > @ 3.85. rarely paying
much over S4.00 , and as good stock as over
went over the scales sold round about $4.10@
4.2.1 , a few fancy icolug as high as S4.40 , with
prime Htlllers averauing over i00 : ! ibs at
84.85. The hot weather and greater
risk In handling big cattle on ac
count of danger In not coollim
out had something to do with the slow de
mand. Then , again , heavy beef Is not desir
able In warm weather. Toxanit were about
the same as heretofore. The mocker and
