A PRETTY WAR STORY.
How n Confederate Girl Canio to
Mnrry n Fedcrnl Adjutant.
Now York livening Post : When the
federals captured the little town of ,
in Mississippi , they took Judge Strong's
house for the headquarters. The old
judge wns mad , Ho decided al once to
go Into cxllu.
llo borrowed his own carriage and
horses to convey him and his family to
the river bank , where they would take
skills.
It looked a trifle like a funeral proces
sion ns the women , veiled and weeping ,
filed solemnly down the stops nnd took
their places in the waiting carriage. The
ludgo followed In unsmiling dignity.
They were going into oxilo.
Tholr borrowed driver slammed tlio
carriage door upon them and mounted
to Iho box with a solemn "Git up" to Ins
horses. Sonio one halted him from the
interior of the house , The hurried step
of n spurred boot along the big central
hall , and then , standing Micro with bared
head before them , was the young otticor
upon whose unwilling hands thu odium
ot this ejectment had econ thrust. With
a quick military salute to the veiled
womenho turned his troubled eyes upon
the judge , sitting sternly erect upon the
front scat , llo hold iu one hand a bird
cage , in the other a basket of blooming
hyacinths torn up by the roots. Ho know
they all hated linn , and it was hard to
say what ho wanted just then to say to
them. The hot blood mounted high up
to the white temples that wcro in such
sharp contrast to his sun burned cheeks.
He stammered out his errand presently
awkwardly enough , " 1 brought these
thinking tlio ladies might want to set
them out somewhere else , " indicating
the hyacinths , "and this" the bird cage
"supposing It had been forgotten. "
"Present them to the general in com
mand with my respects"said the judge's
wife in her most patriotic tones , "and
tell him , if there is anything more wo
can surrender for his comfort , we hope
he will not bo too modest to indicate it. "
"Oh , mamma , that is cruel. " A girl's
veil was thrown back and a pair of little
hands wore held out for the hyacinths.
"It was good of you to think of this. The
bird would bo in our way. It's mine , I
give it to you. These I will take , thank
you. " Then they were gone , ana lie had
nothing but a memory loft , and n very
inconvenient piece ot army bajrgago on
hand. Hut never was bint or beast bettor
cared for than the useless little yellow
warbler.
At the end of the war the family re
turned. The condition in which they
found the premises was a matter of more
amazement to the Strongs than it had
been to their neighbors. There was not
one sign lett of tlio enemy's occupation
but the grassy welts on the lawn and the
free sweep of exposure to the public road ,
which tit first was .1 sore trial to the
nerves of the whole family. The judge
made it his business at once to ocgm
siftiiu ; tlio mystery of this unfathered
benifvcnce to him and to his. A little
bird gave him the right clue.
They had been settled m the old house
but a few days when two enormous tubs ,
each containing a thrifty rose-bush , and
a glittering gilt Chinese pagoda of a
bird's cage , containing a useless little
yellow warbler , were added to their ef
fects. These were damped abruptly down
upon the portico with no message of any
sort. A tag was fastened to each rose
bush , on which was written : "Survival
of tlio fittest. " The bird gave them the
clue.
"Why did yon do all this for mo ? " the
judge asked , sitting face to face with the
new lawyer , whom ho had unearthed as
his benefactor.
" 1 don't know that 1 did do it foryou , "
the ex-adjutant said , his eyes wandering
from force of habit to where tlio bird's
cage had swung and tlio rose trues had
bloomed behind the little oflico.
"For whom then ? "
"For your daughter the one that lifted
her veil and remembered to be kind and
just to her enemy , even in the sharp
hours of her own misery. God docs not
make such a woman as that every day ,
and seine of these days , when the sore
ness hap , worn itself out of her heart and
, 1 mean to aslc her to bo my wife ,
ot vet though , I bide my time. "
It is safe to conclude that the soreness
was worn out of everybody's heart before
the day when that strolling pliotographor
sprung his camera on tlio old Strong
house , when the family wore all grouped
on the stuccoed steps , for among the
blurry forms on the stops is the ox-adju
tant's. He is sitting quite close to the
judge's youngest daughter , and if you
look at the picture through a magnifying
glass , you can see that her lingers are
clasped in his , though the petals of a
handful of "sunset" roses almost hide
them.
Causes of tlio Business Depression.
"The Economic Disturbances since.
1873. " by Hon. David A. Wells , in Popu
lar Science Monthly for July : Another
notable tendency among investigators is
to assign to clearly secondary causes or
results , positions of primary importance ,
Thus ( general ) over-production , or an
amount of production of commodities in
OXPCSS of demand at remunerative prices ,
finds greater favor as an agency of cur-
runt economic disturbance than any
other. IHit surely all nations and people
could not , with one accord and almosl
concurrcntlv.have entered upon a course
of unprofitable production without being
impelled by an agency so universal am :
so irresistible as to almost become in
vested with the character of n natura
law ; and hence over-production obvi
ously , in any broad inquiry , must bo ac
cepted as a result rather than n cause
And so , also , in respect to 'motallism'
and the enactment of laws restrictive of
commerce ; for no ono can seriously sup
pose that silver has boon demonetized or
tarltl's enacted inadvertently , or at the
whim and caprice of individuals , with a
view of occasioning cither domestic or
international economic disturbances ; but
on the contrary , the only reasonable
supposition is , that antecedent condi
tions or agencies- have prompted to action
in both cases , by inducing a belief that
measures of the kind specified were In
the nature of safeguards against economic
evils , or as helps to , at least , local pros
perity. And as crop failures.tho ravages
of insects , the diseases of animals , the
disappearance of tish , and maladminis
tration of government , are local and no
necessarily permanent , they must al
clearly , in any investigation , bo regardec
as secondary and not primary agencies
In short , the general recognition , by al
investigators , that the striking character
islic of the economic distufbanco thn
has prevailed since 1873 is its universal
ity , of necessity compels a recognition o
the fact that the agency which was
mainly instrumental in producing it coulc
not huvo been local , and must havu been
universal m its influence and action. Am
the question of interest which next presents
sonts itself is. can any such agoncv , thus
operative and thus potential , bo'rccog
mzed ? Let us inquire.

ALTERATIONS ,

tions in the building we ocoupv. Carpenters and painters \vill
take possession of our upper floors to fit them into suitable salesrooms - *
rooms and to enable us to properlv displav the immense stock
which we intend to put in for the fall. We have to get some goods
out of the wav to give the workmen room to work , and rather
than to move the goods around or store them , we have decided to
make a big out and slaughter them , When we out we do not do it
with a knife we take the axe , for instance *
One lot of fine light-colored Men's Sack Cheviot Suits * with
good serge lining , and elegantlv made up , which sold this season

One lot of good all wool Cassimere Sack Suits , a fine grev piU
heck , well trimmed and made. The regular price for this Suit is
$9 , and is sold bv other houses for much more than that. We have
out it down to $5.75.
Another lot of same qualitv and make , onlv different pattern ,
a neat , stvlish stripe , for same price. These two suits are the
greatest bargain we ever offered.
One lot of strictlv All Wool Suits , plain grey color ; this is 0
durable suit , well gotten up. out down to $5 ; the cheapest all wool ]
shown , and worth at least $8.50-
We have only a small quantity left of finer grade light weight ? !
