The reason for this action Is stated to bo a

to the UKK. | STOCKS The stock market
the past week has been under the control of
Gould and Sngo. Trading was active , and
tlio market at times showed Increased
breadth , although the feeling was Intensely
nervous , owing to the continued manlpula
tlon of rates for money , the bidding being
Up to rates of X to $ i per cent per diem , and
the Interest forced weak holders to liquidate ,
and enabled the manipulators to absorb large
lines of cheap stocks. The bears went In too
ttoavy , and as the "illg 2' ' ( Gould and Sage )
hold the reins , they pulled them up tight and
forced the bears to cover , and the result was
that prices closed yesterday at nearly the

The receipts were Itelit even for the last
A > ypf the week , and there were hardly
enough cuttle In to make a market. There
was no Inclination among the buyers to take
even what were In and there was very little
done on the market. The receipts of cattle
have been light all the week , but for all that
there has been no quotable Improvement In
the prices. The only grade of cattle , for
which tnere has been any Inquiry , Is good
Jut steers of medium weight. Coarse , heavy
and grassy cattle otall kinds are not wanted.
The run of hogs was liberal for the close
of the week. The market opened strong and
'active at an advance of rxvjloc. The buyers
were all represented on the market and
everything was sold and weighed up before
in Id-day. The water supply Is now In such
shape that the pucklnc-houses can run full
force , which will have a tendency to keep
the inarket up.
