Duquette & Co. are moving stock and fixtures into tlu'ir new store , the Bloomer building , and getting in readiness for early occupancy. The city treasurer turns over to the city auditor vouchers showing that there has been a paying oil'of $31,000 $ of the bills against the city. The noel tournament opened last night at the Manhattan. Tliuru are se\un ent ries : Robinson , Helm , Kluec , Schaefer , Jlut/ , Dahl and Long. The tournament , if each man plays his games , uud don't ' back out , will last for a week. Yesterday a notice was served on John Helm , of the Ogden homo bar , citing him to appear before Judge Carson with the others on the -Ith of June. There nuw remains but one bar in the city , that of the J'acilic house , which has not yet been nolillcil. The bills for two cars of tics , for the Mauawa Motor railway , have arrived at the Wabash freight otheo and the cars will probably arrive to-day. The Chicago lumber company have received bills for eight cars which show that many are on the road. George Patterson , who has boon hero for several days , has been arrested by Sherill'Truax , of Jackson county , for the robbery of a watch from a jeweler of Maquoketa , la. , named Charles Galla gher. The sheriff returned with hia pris oner to Maquoketa. The nlans for the counters , desks , rail ings , etc. , of the new countv court , house are filed at the county auditor's ollice. They are elaborate , ami the assurance is given that the interior of the new build ing will bo so attractive and convenient as to bo in keeping with the exterior. King it Franklin's circus ended their two day's stand in this city last night. The price of admission has only been ten cents blit the show has been equal to many a fifty-cent one who made more pretentious. This is their second year's visit to this city and in both cases the public have been highly entertained. A girl is reported as missing. She en tered the employ of the family of George Smith , on Madison street , on Thursday. She brought her trunk and began work. Towards evening she remarked that she had to go down town for something , bat up to yesterday noon had not put in an appearance again and had not sent for her trunk. , The city council thoughtlessly ad journed to meet on Decoration day. No tice has been given for those desiring to protest against their assessments to ap pear before that body , sitting as a board of equalization , but in view of the day it is probable that there will bo no business done beyond adjourning to some more appropriate season. Encampment No. 8 , Union Veteran Legion will hold a memorial service on Sunday. The encampment will meet in special assembly at Grand Armv hall on Pearl street at 'i o'clock p. in. and pro ceed in a body to Fafrvicw cemetery where , at the place sct apart for the un known dead , the service will bo con ducted by Rev. T. J. Mackay. The Methodist l.idles will serve dinner nnd supper at No. BOS Broadway on Monday , May 80. The natronatro of soldiers and citizens is solicited. Dinner will bo served from 11 a. m. to 3 p. m. . supper from 5 to 10 p. m. Ice cream and strawberries will bo served at all hours. Dinner and supper 25 cents each. Straw berries and ice cream 25 cents. In the district court yesterday the Jones murder trial still occupied the time. The evidence is being taken very rapidly , and although every important point is closely contested , yet the trial is proceeding much mote rapidly than was expected. Jones sits apart from all the others , speaking to no ono , and apparently as unconcerned in the trial as if ho was sim ply waiting at the depot for a ni ht train , half snoozing , and apparently bored by the tcdiousness of the wailing. It is claimed that ho is not balanced mentally , but if he is ho certainly is the best actor to feign insanity or idiocy that ever ap peared in a court room. Jacob Sims , the attorney prosecuting the saloons , is receiving anonymous threatening letters. He declines to let them go out of his hands for publication , but the contents of some of them , as learned by the HEB , are too ridiculous to alarm anyone. Ono letter warns him that ho is to die , an event which will doubtless come to pass some time , al though it will not doubtless bo hastened by any such intimations of its speedy coming. The writers of such anonymous letters must feel very sneaky when they como to sit down and calmly think over what fools they have made of them- selves. The council Is considering the advisa bility of putting the patrol wagun in use in connection with the now lire and police alarm. The tire department needs another horse , to servo as a substitute in ease any of the present number is tem porarily disabled , and so long as it seems necessary to get one more horse , it seems that two might as well bo pur chased , and this team used on the patrol wagon. By tlio use of the new alarm system , and the patrol wagon , the pres ent force of police can bo made to equal twice the present number under the pres ent way of traveling the beats nnd making arrests. The effectiveness of the force can bo thus greatly increased with very little additiona expcnso. The Hambletonian stallion , Arbitrator , can be seen at my stable on Fourth or Bancroft streets , three doors south of Hattenhaur's carriage repository. Ho is n grandson of llysdyko's llamblotoniau on the sire side , and n grandson of Mem- brine chief on the dam side , the ac knowledged principal products of speed and general purpose horses in America , and Arbitrator is no exception to the rule. Ho is a horse of great individual merit and speed , and for the purpose of convincing the breeders of high bred horses that ho is all that is claimed of him , I will speed him a ten or twenty- roilo dash on the road to COO pounds' weight witli any stallion owned in the country. Breeders of high bred horses will mitko a note of this and carry it in their hats , as the owner of these horses puts all the money he has or can bor row into straight horses , and not into books , pamphlets nnd wind , talking about their forty-second cousins' per formances. Also Colonel Reeve , bred by W. H. H , Colby , of Fort Dodge , la. , sired by Starlight - light , by Star of the West , dam by Coupon pen , Jr. , by Coupon , by Rysdyko's Ham- blctoiilan. This colt is a stranger in a strange land , but his breeding is cer tainly all any man could wish for. His great and positive individuality , Ins true amUpoworful stride , his wonderful con stitutional powers , nnd his powerful steel-converted frame work , insure foi him n career that will place him among ( he grandest stallioua in the west. London Times : Kioto , as the mikado's capital nnd centre of nristocratio resi dence , was always famous , anil is fam ous still , for the variety nnd excellence of its dances , as well as for the beauty , grace and skill of the performers whoso accomplishments are a household word in Japan. No visitor should leave Kioto without seeing a mikado ontortainment. For centuries it was the chief school of the art , produced its own high-class types , in which the object always aimed nt was to preserve , amid nil variety , the the courtly elegance and dignity nnd beautiful apparel of ancient styles. Such , for example , is the Shirabivoshi , n pure Kioto dance of considerable antiquity. And such , though of modern date , is the Miyako-Odori , or metropolitan dance , devised barely twenty years ago by n late director of the dancing society of Kioto. A representation of this refined dnncc has just been prepared for the stage with great care in honor of the mikado's visit , and I had an opportunity of wit nessing its performance a few evenings ago. ago.Tho theatre is of plain unvarnished nnd unpaintcd wood , the most striking fea tures being the ponderous roof , carried on a single span of some fifty feet , ami the high excellence of the carpenters' and joiners' work. Besides tlio main stage in front , there are two narrower stages , occupying the right and left sides of tlu building. On the fourth side , facing the main stage , is a largo room-like box foi the imperial family and court , nnd ic front of it two or three tiers of raised seats , plainly a modern invention. The body of the auditorium , occupying the space between the side stages , is a Hat , undivided matted area , in , or rather on , which the spectators sit in Japanese fash ionand solace themselves with their tinj pipes of fragrant tobacco and little cup : of ten. On entering wo nnd the stages concealed coaled by curtains of white silk crape painted with pine/ bamboo and plun trees , the , emblems of longevity , vigor and fragrance. These are the only deco rations. The lighting is footlights , wit ) candles for the stage.and hanging lamp , nnd rows of candles for the rest of the in- erior. On the rise of the curtain the scene in rout represents a summer house in the grounds of the mikado's palace , girt by a veranda with red lacquered steps unit allings , and hung with bamboo blinds. light nitd left , on each side stage , is a crimson dais , on which are seated eight girl musicians , or geisha , from about iighteon to twenty years of age , clothed n soft raiment ot biilliunt hues , and got IP from head to foot in the highest style of Japanese art. The eight on the right are players of the satniscn , a species of tlireo-siriiigi'd guitar , the chords of which are struck with an ivory plectrum. Of the eon thu eft four nlny the tsti/.umi , a small drum teld in the air and struck with the hand , ho other four performing ult'srnatcly with the taiko , or Hut drum , and bells of lellcatc tone. Music and singing are at > nco begun. Those are of the iUtunt | and or the mostpart , somewhat dismal typo > ccular to the the higher llights of the musical art in Japan. Ono must be a lapaneso to appreciate them. Time and uno , however , are evidently well kept , nnd the performance is doubtless good of ts kind. Afftor a short overture , the Uaiko appear , entering at the cxtroml- ies. of the side stages , right and left of ho imperial box , and mowng in single ilo toward the main btugo. Their ad vance , extremely slow , can only -bo de scribed as a progress. It is not a march ; icithcr is it a dnnce , as we understand he term. Stately almost to solemnity , 5'ot full qf grace , it is a scries of artistic losturings and pantomime , in time with ho inus c and accompanied by the slow est possible forward movement. By the time all of the dansctisos liavo entered there are sixteen on either side young girls' of from about fifteen to seventeen years old. In dross they are counterparts of tlio musicians aglow with scarlet , light blue , white , and gold , n robes of great lengih and voluminous olds , ound with girdles of truly muligioiKS dimensions. In spile , how- u'or , of the gorgeous coloring , there is lothing garish or distasteful to the eye. So canon of art or taste is oflbntlod. The secret lies in the fabric of the girls1 garments - ments silk crape , the delicate softness > f which relieves the brilliancy of tints hat might otherwise bo displeasing. In person the Maiko arc the prettiest ittlo specimens of budding Japancso ; irlhood , rosy-lipped and black-eyed , iVith comely and delicate features , tiny lands and feet , and an air of graceful modesty and innoccnco rarely seen on iny stage. As for their qoilluro , it is a mraclo of the Japanese hairdresser's skill , and rich with adornments of How- eas and coral. How much of their beauty hesc dainty little lasses may owe to art tmight _ be unkind to inquire too closely , tioto is famed for its manufacture of sliiroi , a white load cosmetic of rare vir tue , and said to be used with a skill which western ladies of fashion would give a jood deal to possess. But surely there : an be little need for it here , if we may udgo from the whiteness of the Maiko's lands and of as much of her arms as is now and then revealed to us. There is also a Japancso rouge of great merit , which uncharitable persons might sus- ) cct of having a share in the brilliancy of those "treads of scarlet , " the Maiko's ins. Tiny razors , too. are even supposed by some malignant minds to play a part in ho finely penciled eyebrows of Japanese belles. Fans , of course , play a "promi nent part in the intricate gestures of the Mikado. Those carried now are largo nnd circular , and richly bedecked with red and white llowers. With these , as with their heads , hands , limbs , and jodies. the Hies display to the full , on their slow progress up the theatre , that music of motion which so delights the > ycs of the Japanese. Thus , turning , bowing , swaying , kneeling , and waving , ilways graceful and in tnno with the nusic , tne ranks at length meet on the Tent stage , pass ono another , and retire again down tlio sides , at tiio end of which .hoy turn , form into pairs , and regain .he stage , one wing soon leaving it , while ; he other continues the dance before the footlights for a few minutes , when it also retires. All this while the music goes on , now sad and slow , anon in livelier strains , and is accompanied by tbn voices of the 9imisen players , chanting a hymn of happiness , prosperity and peace , in which the reign of "our Lord , the Mi kado , " is likenpu in highly ilowery lan guage , to the beauty and tranquility of nature "at this lir.st dawn of spring. " Next the bamboo blinds of the veranda are raised , revealing the first squadron of dancers postured in picturesque groups between a background of dead gold and the crimson lacquer of the veranda. These , descending to the stage , resume the dance. They have parted with their llower-eirt fans , and each girl has a tsu/umi attached to her girdle , with which she accompanies the orches tra. tra.To To them , on their withdrawing , suc ceeds the second squadron , who , with scarlet and white fans , go through a measure of singular grace and beauty , and at length retire to the veranda , which rises with them , bringing the first scene to a close. The second scene is laid in the famous gardens of Arasluy- araa , in the suburbs of Kioto , and ap pears as a fairyland of flowering cherry trees , lit by a galaxy of minute star-like lamps. Hero the whole corps gradually reassemble , and at length execute a final dance of the same type as before , after which they retire by the side stages with the slow , measured movements that marked their first entrance. Thus after about hour's , an perform ance , ends the Miyako-Odori. It illus trates no tale or plot. It is only an elab orate measure of "woven paces and waving- hands , " such as Vivien may have trodden ' 'in the wild woods of Broceliande. " It has no objects but those of exhibiting color , raiment , grace and beauty , with all the skill that Japan ese art taste can contrive , and of preserv ing the old classic style of dancing and .sotting examples of the highest forms of strict feminine etiquette.
