day , and price changes were not lini ortant ,
Early In the day gome ot the many gentle
men on tlio curbstone wlio keep books for
the clique gave their friends to understand
that the negotiations between the man In tlio
air and the Hunk of Montreal for a llttlo
matter of 83,000,000 had fallen through , and
on tlio strength of this the scalpers were In
clined to bo bearish In their operations at
the opening. U'llh a caution born of un
profitable experience In fooling with tlio
clique on previous tips touching Its llnanclal
weakness , the scalpers wont at thu market In
a vrry gingerly manner , and the absence of
reckless plunging was tlio ruling character
istic of their operations. The clique brokers
didn't hear of the 111 fortune that had be
fallen them for some tlmn , and when tlio sad
truth was finally communicated to them ,
they smiled broadly. Tlioso who had acted
on their llrst tips bought back their wheat
when they found that the clique was going
right along sawing wood at the same old
stand and Maying nothlnir , and otherwise
acting as though nothing had happened. June ,
which Imd sold off to & > Xc , reacted to b'JJ c ,
and July , which had receded from bC c
to tCKc , advanced to fcGJ < c. During the last
couple of hours the market wan listless and
prices settled , more from Inaction than any
thing else , hownver. One o'clock quotations
were 88 ; < c for June , bfiXe for Jnlv and H5J < c
for August. These ligures show very little
deviation from yesterday afternoon. Trade
was light and the inaiket was unequivocally
dull. Speculation as to thn designs of the
clique continues to engrocs the attention of
everybody. Efforts to arrive ut an approxi
mately correct estimate of the short Interest
In June are being made on every hand. A
canvass by two or three prominent bears re
united In the Accumulation of evidence sufll-
clcnt to satisfy thorn that tlio short Interest
In June did not exceed 10.000,000 or 12,000,000
bushels over and above the cash property ,
On the other hand , parties who are In a
position to judge Intelligently , but who do
not pretend to speak by authority , estimate
the short Interest at 30,000,000 bushels outside
of the sales against possessed property in
Chicago. Possibly iho truth lies somow'hore
between the two extremes. The clique laid
dormant to-day. It did nothing to Inlluence
tlio market either way.
Largo , general and promiscuous trading
was witnessed In the corn pit to-day and the
market was weak during the greater portion
of the lone session , closing at the
bottom at 1 o'clock and Me lower
than last night for all futures.
There was no plunging. Three hundred and
clghtv-iivocara were estimated for to-morrow
anil 450 for Monday. From 40 , ' < c for July
tlio local market weakened to 3Uc and Juno
sold from 3SKc off to 38 Vc , Doth closing at In-
Bide ligurcs at 1 o'clock. Seller May was
nominally J c under June and August
premium over July.
Oats were linn and rather dull early , but
when corn declinedthe market grew soft and
under free selling by longs , pricti.s weakened
rapidly , Juno selling down from SGkfo to
2.y < c and closing at 1 o'clock at 2flyc , or 9ffc
lower than yesterday. July oats were } /c elf ,
closing at 27c. This future sold early at 27'
In the provision market a quiet feeling
again held control. The usual number of
traders put In appearance , but there was no
disposition to trade save to cover or extend
BO me outstanding contracts for lard or short
ribs , and the late unsatisfactory state of af
fairs was continued. Trading , In fact , was
v slower If anything than on any of the
j former days of the wecK , yet the general slt-
nation was without decided change. Pork
was held at yesterday's prices SSI. 75 for
cash , May and Juno. Lard and short ribs
averaged a llttlo easier , and for the former
prices at 1 o'clock showed a decline of 2J c
and for ribs 6c. Juno , July and August weio
the favorite months.

activity In tlio stock market to-day , and
owing to the fact that to-morrow will be a
Bhort and Monday a holiday , traders were
more disposed to sell than buy. Some largo
blocks ot stocks \\ere thrown on the market
by people who did not care to go over Into
next week long ot stocks. Lake Shore
and Western Union were thn weakest thlnis
on the list , but the dcclUie was attributed to
the fact that operators "were Indisposed to
start any movement or take on a line of
Mocks until Junel , Manitoba , however , had
exceptional strength , advancing IK per cent

favor of the property. Lake Jirio A Western
was nnlte active and rather buoyant. The
Btory was that Cummlncs , Kryce & Thomas ,
the Bjrndlcato which reorganized the road re
cently , had nrronccd to make a trio of In
spection over It , and would at the same time
ttazt bull movement In the ttock. London
prices for American stocks wcro all higher ,
Indicating , as the bulls claimed , that foreign
ers were still buying stocks. There was a
good deal Of bull talk In rreard to the Van-
derbllU and Consolidated ( las. During the
closing liour the bears made a drive at the
market , being careful to sell stocks that were
least protected bv buying orders from the
clique. Most of the traders were already
away and llttlo dlniculty was experienced In
getting prices oil X to J4'per cent. Manitoba
lost all Its early advance and the Vandcr-
bllts broke badly and closed at the lowest
point of the day. lluom traders and Cam-
mack were the principal sellers. Conserva
tive houses advised purchases on breaks. The
closing prices for the list were the lowest
made for several days. The total sales were
about 300,000 shares.

Cattle.
The run of cattle was very light , even for a
Friday. The market was about steady nt
yesteryny's prices. Big , heavy cattle , weigh
ing from 1,300 to 1,500 , are not as much In de
mand as lighter cattle and do not bell as well
In proportion.
The receipts of hogs were lighter than yes
terday by 400 head , but there wore four or
live loads of stale receipts In. The market
was about steady on choice heavy hogs , but
about 5c lower on common and medium
grades. The demand was good and every
thing sold at an early hour.

IIUTTKit liutter continues to arrive In
very liberal quantities and far In excess of
the demands of the local retail trade. Local
larmers and dairymen are bringing In a
great deal of choice butter , which they sell
direct to the retail trade , ami this cuts off
just so much from the commission houses.
The treat bulk of these receipts Is selling ut
I0@l2c , with the greater propoitlon nt the
less price. An occasional package of the
best is sold to the retail trade at 13$14c ( , but
it has to be strictly choice to bring that price.
The shipping demand is good nnd the ship
pers are able to keep the market cleaned up
and prevent any accumulation of stock.
Euas The receipts have been a llttlo more
liberal this week in proportion to the de
mand than last week. The prevailing price
has been Do thus far this week , but stocks
have been moving a llttlo slow with a ten
dency to accumulate. Yesterday there was a
weak feeling on the market and a good many
dealers were looKIng for a decline. To-day ,
however , the receipts were heavy and eggs
were selling generally at Uc. with round
"ots at 10 } c. There are a gooi many stale
'ggs received and shippers would do well to
candle their eggs and taus avoid paving ex
press charges on stock that lias to be thrown
away on Ua arrival.
LIVK POOI.THY The receipts of chickens
are not heavy and the market is firm. Old
fowls of fair size sell readily at 833503.60.
There have been no spring chickens in of
any account this week. Uoodsl/.ed spring
chickens would sell well. A few small
ducks wore received and sold at 83.50 per
