the IlKK.I June wheat was pegged at Wo
to-day during the long session. The prices
fluctuated between H7u nnd SS' ' c , Inside
figures being touched n few minutes before 1
o'clock. There was very little business done
below 88c , however , nnd there was only
moderate trading In the option. For n mar
ket In which a f < 0,000,000 bushel short Intercut
lias been extensively advertised It is really
astonishing how llttlo wheat is wanted at
this juncture. The bulk of speculative busi
ness was In the latter futures , July being the
favorite wanted and August and December
ranking next In point of speculative popu
larity. July , which four days ago sold at a
discount of ! ! c under June , approached to
within J < c of the latter month at ono time
thlsfoienoon , though the difference averaged
IKc most of tlio day. Trading in July
was general nnd large. Indications
pointed to purchases of heavy individual or
clique lines. It was floor gossip that ( Salves-
ton nnd California wen ; again In tlio market
on a very largo scale. A tip was gtvon out
that before flie end of tlio month July would
command n natural premium over June , but
that the latter option would bo pushed up
Into line Instead of Juno being Ice down , as
was the case last month. The 1 o'clock
range was bbe lor June , bt > Ke for July and
84'tfe for August. Cio | > reports from the
winter wheat Held are In the main encour
aging , but advices from the northwest Indi
cate the existence of n teellng of growing
alarm among producers over the prospect.
Spring wheat is very liable to suffer from the
hot weather , which is forcing the plant be
fore tlio roots have had a chance to spread ,
thus causing spindling growth. Tlio hot
weather seems to have arrived ten days or
two weeks earlier than usual In
.
Corn was dull and steady. Tlio movement
from the Interior Is only moderate and de
' of vislblo stocks Is going on rapidly.

of it Is floating around. The tone of the mar
ket to-ur.y was one of firmness. Fluctuations
were witnln moderate limits and the change
of prices to bo noted Is In the direction of
IntprovHinent. Juno ranged at 81 > > { c low and
'Ji r < $3U > c high , resting atll'JVc at 1 o'clock.
The range for July was 40 % ( < J4ltfc and the 1
o'clock prlco was 41$41c. ( . There was a
small-sired flurry In oats , which carried the
price of Juno from ! iOc to 20 } < c and July
from 27 c to i7c. ! The excitement that
was occasioned by crop reports did not last.
The 1 o'clock range was 3t'c for Juno and
27-'ifc for July.
In provisions there was a better showing
of strength , liuslness failed to show any
Improvement or clve promise of any In-
cruaso right away , but In the general market
the feeling was unquestionably more favora
ble for holders , who were Influenced by the
advance In hogs on the face of eood receipts
to 8ho\vlnss desire to sell. Offerings of nil
descriptions of product , and for cash and
future delivery , were comparatively moder
ate tinder the circumstances , and
though quiet , trade was pervaded by
n strong tone , 1'rlccs also averaged
higher than yesterday all around ,
and based on last night's closings. The ad
vance at 1 oclock was fully 50c on pork. 8)40
on lard and -KS.'Vc on short ribs. June ,
July and August were again tavorito futures.
The day's light trading appeared to bo
largely on account of scalpers.

medium weight cattle were hard to sell at
yesterday's prices , wlulo coarse , heavy cattle

men pronounced It emphatically the worst
market of the year on big , heavy rancho cat
tle. There were some fat , heavy rancors ,
for which It was hard to get any kind of a
bid. The general market was about G@lCc
lower all around and trade was slow and
weak at the decline. Tha receipts for the
week are over . ' 1,000 heavier tlian last ana are
considerably heavier than OHO year ago.

pecting a bear market In stocks to-day , but
contrary to expectations prices held very
steady. London was not seriously affected
by the slump In the market yesterday and
some ot the largest foreign houses were con
iidcutly advising purchases of stocks at about
current prices. New England was the most
active stock on the list and the Wormsers
wore credited with having charge of the bull
pool formed In It some days ago. There was
some bearish talk from Chicago on the
Grangers. It was claimed that the recent cut :
In rates would seriously affect the revenues
In all Granger roads. A report was In clrcu :
Intlon stating that Manitoba earnings for uho
lisc.il year ending June 30 would show an Increase
crease ot fully 000,000 and that the net earn
ings would be largo enough to enable rn.ho <
company to pay an 8 per cent dividend it I
chose to do so. Cotton seed oil moved up > i
point but broke back quickly on stop orders
St. Louis & San Francisco stocks were all

The London closing prices for stocks wen
the highest of tiia day , and this exercised i
bullish Influence on the market At noon
the whole list was very strong at about the
best prices for the day. Stocks were even
duller during the iittcrnoon than they were
during the day. Chicago dispatches were
uniformly bearish , it being reported that the
Granger roads were engaged in a lierco rate

war which was likely to extend and Involve

spite of tlio bear news , however , the market
rallied , toward the close and the last quota
tions wcic little changed fiom the opening.
Manitoba broke on the icport that the North
ern Pacllic had decided to build Into Its terri
tory { In retaliation for Its clforts in the same
direction. The total sales were about 1WO.OOO .
