' Military Notes. Iriiosi TIIK nun's LINCOLN IIUIIKAU. ] The unreiisoniible nnd unwarranted ttction of thu Colorado live stock com mission in quarantining agnin&t Nebraska Trill soon break its legitimate fruitage , Judging from the temper of the Nebraska commission and it ? action in the mat- tor. Colorado , in this quarantine against its eastern neighbor , prohibits the impor tation of young stock and blooded stonk into Colorado confines , and the result is that many Nebraska breeders and deal ers mifi'cr and are placed in the sumo .catalogue with Illinois dealers , while their slock is as perfect and free from disease as any in the land. The fact is that not for years has any infectious dis ease among our cattle prevailed , and there is no healthier stock in the moun tains of Colorado than on the plains of Nebraska , This state also has a strict Quarantine against Illinois , which is the only locality where an infectious disease has existed in the west for six mouths past , Yesterday , to bring the action of the Colorado authorities to n realization Of their action , the live stock commission wrote them concerning a Nebraska quar antine against them that , put in opera tion , would practically suspend ship ments to markets from Colorado. The letter , written by the commissioners , is ns follows : LINCOLN , May 1R , 1SS7. Charles (1. ( Lamb , V. S. Dear Sir : Yours of the ISth at hand Containing copy ot your quarantine rules piralnst the state ot Nebraska. Now this last Stop wo regard as bcln ; very hasty and with out cause , and 1 am authorized by the com mission to hay to you that If you persist In this quarantine at'ainat Nebraska wo will declare quarantine against Colorado within ten days. Hoping that you will reconsider this matter , lam yours respectfully , JAB. C. BIIINKY , Commissioner. As an illustration of the way business is accumulating on the live stock com mission , the following places reported oases of glanders in Wednesday's mail : Holdrigo. Uunbar , Central City , Calvert , Flatto Centre , Grain a , Sarpy county , Columbus , Beaver City , Ponca , Vordon , Hardy and Auburn. While this day's tnall brought iu complaints above the average , it is a fair way in which coni- nlainUi accumulate , and over 100 are now cooked awaiting investigation. One party in writing said : "It is with pleas ure that 1 write you of a horsolhavo that las the glanders. " Wherein thb pleasure panic in making such an announcement Was not manifest. STATE HOUSE NOTES. Sheriff Charles Penn , of Custer county , Was at Lincoln yesterday , bringing witli liim to the penitentiary Thomas Vincent , who enters upon a twenty-four years' sentence for murder. Sheriff Pitt Kathburn , of Dakota City , Was at the capital city the day before , bringing with him a horse thief named Colics , who will inhabit the state peni tentiary. To-day the governor will visit the state Jiatcliory at South Bond , where ho will . .meet the members of the ftsh commis sion. His excellency will inspect the Blate hatchery and the distribution of Bonio 350.000,000 young fish that will bo Blurted out for planting in the stato. On Friday of this wjok , the Held and line ofliccrs of the First Nebraska Regi ment will meet at the otlicu of the adju tant general for the purpose of electing n colonel to succeed L.V. . Colby , promoted meted to brigadier general , and to elect to lieutenant colonel to till the existing va cancy. Adjutant General Cole yesterday forWarded - Warded commissions to thb following of ficers in different companies : Martin J. Alahonoy , captain ; Frank iowler , first lieutenant , nnd W. K. Hougers , second lieutenant , all of company K.at iremont. U. A. Alorolnnd , captain , and L , A. Bald- Win. first lieutenant of company F , at Ounlata , and Lieutenant Hall of company < pr , at Beatrice. Colonel Colby was at the adjutant general's office yesterday. A GOOD SUGGESTION. A prominent citizen in public affairs .Suggests that it would bo wisdom on the part of the city council to refrain from discussions on paving materials for the Afferent districts until after the contracts ju advertised for are opened. It is very evident that if the council and property holders decide in advance on the mate rial to be used that the promoters of the material selected will not bid down the way they would if the other contestants lor paving material were in the contest With a show of success. The action of advocates for certain materials in push ing for a decision at once is in no way wise , and it opens the dooip at once for Jpools and jobbery. THE OUEAT WALKING MATCH. Preparations are complete for the walk ing match at the Metropolitan rink that commences at 8 o'clock to-night and will end at 10 o'clock Saturday night. This , os before announced , is a fifty-hour go- as-you-ploaso match , and such noted pe destrians as Dan O'Loary , of Chicago , Frank Hart , the colored pedestrian of Boston , are on the ground ready for the / contest. Charles H. Uoss , of Omaha , and George Hoffman , of Bollwood , are also entered for the n > co. The track in the rink is of sawdust , sixteen laps to the mile , and ono wager has already Dcen made that some ouo of the pedestrians will make batter than 200 miles in the time , ABOUT THE CITV. There are 20,000,000 acres of govern ment land in Dakota still opou to settle ment. The Bismarck laud district has 2,500- 000 aercsi Devil's Lake district , 4,000,000 acres. Deadwood land district , 2.000,000 acres. Aberdeen land district , 000,000 acres. Grand Forks land district , 000,000. Fargo laud district. 400,000. , The land in the Huron , Watertown , Mitchell und Yanktoh districts id sub stantially gone , Some time , of course , a portion of the reservations set aside for the Indians will bo open for general set. tlomonl ; but at present 20.000,000 of acres comprise all the available land for settlers in all the vast Territory of Da kota. At a moderate rate of settlement this land will be gone within the next three years , and the best of it within the next twelve to eighteen months. It is thorcsoro important that those contem plating immigration to Dakota , should embrace the very earliest opportunity to secure homesteads. A Great Uattlo is continually going on in the human sys tem. Thu demon of impure blood strives to gain victory over the constitution , to ruin health , to drag victims to the grave , A good reliable medicine like Hood's Sarsapnrilla is the weapon with which to defend one's self , drive the desperate enemy from the Held , and restore pence and bodily health for many years. Try this peculiar medicine. A Star-Route Mall. Ernest Ingorsoll , in The American Maga/inc : In one of the gulches stood the ruins of a cabin and a "star-route" refuge. No possible need had existed for u mail-carriage across here , but a few years before my date , contractors had found it profitable to institute the route ; and a sack holding a half dozen letters and perhaps a few .copies of the Con gressional Globe , was carried back and forth on horsebacic. Ono man brought it one hundred ana lifty miles or so from Missouri and delivered it hero in the wild woods to a second man , who carried it do'vn to lake Pond' d'Orcillo , rowed forty miles across the fir-circled water , and handed it over to a rider at the west ern end. This middle man was utterly alone. Not a single soul lived on his route. In the winter he traveled on snow-shoos , for months together saw no body but the carrier who brought him his pouch at each end , and could tell you stories of adventures with wolves and boars , and of wonderful visions of elks , sheep and mountain goats , liobinson Crusoe led a less secluded life. They were confined to the bed four weeks. Dur ing that time and previous I bought many kinds of medicine , then I emn'oyed a phy sician , but nothing gave relief until I heard of Athlophoros. I bought a bottle at once , and am glad to say in a very short timejthe swelling was reduced , the pain gone , and they were entirely w < II.
