the iJKii.j Wheat opened llrm at yesterday's
prices , with I hu crowd eauer Imjerj. Thu
market sold elf vciy slightly , but started up
on Indications of clique buying. Many of
the scalnen who It-id sold ou the bulge jes-
tetday atternoon came Into the market , and
finding that offerings \\eni limited ,
began bidding for the wheat
they wanted. This element took
the market away from the clique and put
Juno up to bOJffc , when thu demands of thu
fihuitswurosatlsllud. The in , u ket , left to
Itself , worked elf , June receding to bO' c ,
July touching STiXc , and August b3tfc. Hero
ngaln clique houses appeared as buyers , and
as thoACSSlon drcwtnwards acloso the music
of the baud bccamo louder and the tune live-
tier. About ten minutes before the bell
tapped Juno touched BTc. Tliero It stuck
tremulously to the tinlsli , July rcntiiu at
fc5 c , August atist c and .Suiitut'ibor at b'l' c.
Brokers had orders to close thu tnarkut at S7c ,
and they did It. Thuy did not n.ive to buy a
great quantity of grain to elo it , cither.
Transactions In tlio pit were bulow thu average -
ago In aggregate , the market very narrow.
Loeal scalpers and ( those who can have In
stantaneous connection with the exchange ,
try to tall onto thu clique , but thu public does
not bti'in to havn availed itsult generally of
thu clique "yes , " so generously and continu
ously | iut out. Commission houses report a
light run on outside ordeis. It Is said , how-
civer , that the bucket shops aru great sulfcreis ,
which would Indicate ) that thu multitude ; ot
Halo fellows had ciuuht on nnd were paaseu-
gurit on thu clique train.
Corn was oiraln weak and lower , especially
thu Juno option. There was less changing
over to day , or , In other words , loss buying
of Juno and uelllncof July , which accounted
for the conspicuous weakness In thu former
month , and it sold "a split" lowur than ou
last break , when the Inside figures on the
jrop , up to that time , VUTU touched. The
principal feature of to-tlayV tradu was the
very general and heavy unloadlngii by longs.
Dlscoui.iL'uel holders dumped Iane quanti
ties , and although the bhrlnkcrage In values
occasioned by free offerings \veru not sovuru ,
It was a heavy sluggine market from thu
fl | > cnlng to the close. Initial traeles In Jutiu
were at ! ) ' { and In July at41c. or Xc under
yesterday's closing. Juno .slutfed elf to " 3 %
® ; wc. and closed at : "Jc straight , and July
rested at 40jc , after touching -lojfc. May
closed lit Ic under Junonnd August at about ! ! e
premium. Thu actual decline In the leading
futures was © c. Larger receipts are
predicted for next week , Monday's rim bclmc
estimated at 175 cars. Port clearings jester-
day from two ports wort ) IH.OWJ bushels , and
foreign maikets veru quoted quiet and
steady. To-day's charters by lake shippers
were for HO.oou tnishols. Oats vroru fuiily
active and prices weakened % c tor the piln-
clpal trading months. Fine weather , good
receipts , tree speculation olturltiKS and the
dcprcsKlon of corn , all helped to weaken the1
market. Fluctuations were nairow , June
closing at 'J7c and J uly at .iS WJSJf e J itsl
at the close 'JO.uoo bushels wuro sold toi
August at S-'CJ c.
In the ; provision pit yesterday's Intcresi
was buruly maintained. Thu market opened
with a promise ol moie active tiadlug , bui
nil the appearance of a weaker and mort
bearish teollng than was expected , trader :
became comparatively conservative , hence
todaj's business , all told , was somewhat
unsatisfactory aud without hpecial fuatuio
From thu start thu bear side was tejardcc
with the greatest favor , and at the close lare
stood at 7k@lOc and short ribs lOQlii c under
dor last night's liiml quotations. The bos
prices reported were obtained on opening
transactions Speculation was con lined U

June , July and August. J'ork was hold a1

disposition to take hold. Lard sold uiodcr

E. Pettjs , Sholbv , was hero with a load of
hogs which sold on the market.
J. B. Hunter , North Parke , a well known
cattle owner , was among thu vlsltois at the
yards.
U. A. Ileaton , of Clark , Huaton & Co. ,
Wuston , was lu with two loads of cattle ami
ono of hogs.
A. Spelts. David City , was heio and sold S9
head of cattle. Fifty-three head avuiaged
1315 aud brought 4.20.
This morn in , ' Fowler Bros , had about
7,000 llvo hugs In their pens , which was
enough to last them for two davs or more. In
spite ot that fact they bought 2,000 more.
Complaints aru made that the tulcgiaph
company does not deliver messages with
sulliciunt promptness. A few hours delay
makes a great dltlerenco In thu livu stock
business.
The number of cattle sold on the market
was vtiy small In comparison with thu num
ber In the yards. This howovur Is alwaj s
the case when there Is a suelden and he-avy
decline In the market , Shippers coma In
with cattle which we-io bought when thu mar
ket was higher , and llndlng that they can
not get out on them , they prefer to go ou tu
Chicago in hopes ot bettering themselves.
Kxporleneo has shown , however , that nlnu
times out of ton the shipper does not receive )
as much In Chicago as ha may be offered
here. Yesterday Mr. Swift , of Swift & Ce > . ,
made a bid on every load ot fat cattle in the
yarels , but only a very few weiu sold. It re -
mains to bo seen whethurtho samecattlo will
net their owners any moro on the Chlcagc

St. James liudgot : "Tho word ton is
quite abolished. Everything that is fash
ionable is now called the iiiek. " So
wrote Lord Kobcrt Seymour in January ,
1788 , in the diary , extracts from which
appear in the April number of Murray's
Magazine , and it is a contribution
towards the history of slang terms as ap
plied to the movements of tashion which
should bo noted by those interested in
Ilia trivialties of language. The "buck
and bloods" of "Kuddygorc , " similarly
recall the many now departed names
given to thosa who follow the fashion
only too closely. Macaroni , beau , dandy ,
top , coxcomb , swell , masher , dude ,
coiiurchic and stiperchic are all of the
same school.
In two of Lord Hoaconslield's novels
the change in the use of such names
U clearly shown. "Dandy has been
voted vulsrar.and beau is now the word , "
is remarked in "J'lie Young Duke , " pub
lished in 1828 , while in "Lothair , " given
to the world in 1870 , there is a reference
to what is colishtcrcd "tho high mode for
a real swell. llii/rJicso historical develop

A May festival.
St. Catherine's academy was the scene
of much bustloihid merriment Tl ursday.
It was tigala'day among the pupils , who
were treated iq a May festival. The beginning -
ginning of the jfostivities was a march of
the pupils through corridors , singing the
litany. Thou a hymn was sung. The
large hall on the second lloor was elabo
rately decorated , and a throne was
erected to the statue of the Virgin which
was crowned by the May queen , Miss
Clara Crcighton. The bishop then
crowned the May and fairy queens , Clara
Croighton and Miss Clara Van Camp.
The prettiest feature ot the day was the
May polo dance by twenty-four children ,
after which they enjoyed unlimited re
freshments. The bishop and eight clergy
were present , also the parents ot the
queens and the former pupils of the
academy. _

The latest rage in the way of decora
tive Novelties are lir pillows that are both
fragrant and ornamental. They are in
great favor for remembrances , just now ,
appropriate quotations sometimes ac
companying the unlquo and suggestive
decorations that makes them seem al
most too dainty for n-c. Mrs. Miimaugh
has exercised her ingenuity on everal
occasions , with telling results. One of
the most delicate is covered with palo
green silk with a spr.iy of lir cones and
twigs in tapestry dyes. Another moro
elaborate , is in p.ilcst blue with a very dif
ficult design ot a female ilguro in a cres
cent with starry stcy surrounding.

house in the middle distance , and a
placid river in the foreground , with
numerous cattle luxuriating in the sun-
shino. The treatment of the picture is
excellent and shows a considerable

ADDITIONAL OOUNOIL BLUFFS.
A Doy Detective.
A boyish follow , giving his name as C
A. Gray , was lodged at the jail as a vag
rant. He had not a nicklo , bis chief per
sonal ofTocU being a star bearing tin
magical words , "private detective , " i
small revolver and a notebook. Ho explained
plained that he had joined an associatioi
m Cincinnati. He had received an invi
tation to join , and was assured that hi
could get a living and a name easily. He
had paid $5 to become a member am
had his certificate with lum , in thu fron
part of the notebook wcro blank page
for recording such arrests as ho migh
make. Thus tar there had been no en
tries in the book. Ho had found the lifi
of a detective rather rocky. Ho hai
come across one sheriff who promised ti
give him $100 if he would find a curtail
man , but ho hadn't found him yet. Th
foolish fellow , who Is only one of man
who have boon dufed | this way , was al

some advice about returning to his worl
on the farm , stopping the reading of this
novels , sell his gun and buv a iliovel

Last evening a most enjoyable conccr
was given in Bayhss park , it lelng a coin
plimentary tendered the public by th
enterprising linn of Odell Bros. & Co
Dalby's fifth regiment band fiirnishci
thu music. This band is a comparative !
young organization , but un lor the lead
crship of Prof. Dalby has elovolopcd raj ;
idly , nigl promises to bo ono of thu lines
organizations in the Htato. Among th
most choice numbers on the programm
were those of Prof. Dalby's own compos

Blull's may well take prldo in havinj
such a gifted resident , whoso band miisii
is played by the boit musical organiza
tions in this country , and even in th
lands beyond the ocean. It is mete thn
.such a musician should bo heartily en
couragocl to remain here , nnd yet it j
not in pursuance of this policy that tin
statement is made that thu concert give
by his band last uvening was an o.xtraoi
elmarily line ono. He and his organi/ii
tion merit sucli praise. The new ban
has had little tlmu to play together am
yet , a few , not knowing this fact wonl
have illustrated it by thuir renditions las
ovuning. The music was of a high ordei
much of it dilltcult , and it was givui
charmingly. There was a largo crowi
to hear it , and all seonicd elollghted , I
is thu opening of the season , and thcl
concerts in thu park aru to follow , it i
to bo hoped that there will bo many c
them. The programme was as follows
