pected here from all parts of Iowa , Ne
braska and Missouri.
The city has been paying storage and
insurance on a lot of the old onunauco
books , which might as well bo sold for
old paper , as they are so faulty that they
have never beou given out for use and
never will bo.
The young people of the Methodist
church will gwo a supper and entertain
ment at the parlors of their church to
night. The entertainment will consist of
songs , solos and instrumental music ,
recitations and readings. Supper and
Ice cream will bo served from U till 10
p. m.
The outlook for that $200,000 hotel
Becms very encouraging , and the needed
amount will soon bo secured. It simply
remains for the citizens to answer the
question whether they want such a hotel
or not. A goodly number are saying
"yes , " and backing the "yes" with their
money.
Rev. T. J. Mackay yesterday married
Horace J. Evans and Miss Nelly E. Chap
man , at the bride's residence , corner of
Sixth street and First avenue m the pres
ence of only the immediate relatives of
the contracting parties. The newly
wedded couple have gone on a short
eastern bridal tour.
Some unknown traveler in passing
nlong Vaughan avenue was annoyed by
a dog belonging to Mr. Holder , and shot
the animal with his revolver. The dog is
said to have been a valuable one and was
not doing any harm when killed. Per
haps in this case the shooter did wrong ,
but there are many dogs to spare.
A follow giving his name as McCnulley

depot yesterday. The otlicors had n
lively struggle to bring iiim in , and
Otllcer Dyer was kicked by him in the
kueo , causing the ollicer to go into the
repair shop. The fellow was linally

promises to bo largely attended. A
merry time is promised all who attend ,
but those who cannot go should bo sure
and buy a ticket. The ollicers have but
one benefit a year , and this should bo a
rouscr. They will perform their duties

that the citizens appreciate the fact that
their duties are heavier than their pay.
Matters are quieting down in the lire

The preliminary moves for the organ-

meeting with much enthusiastic stip-
poit. Another meeting Is to bo hold In
the Mueller Music company's building
Friday evening , and all inteicstcii are
earnestly urged to bo present. At that
time tiie several committees appointed
will report. Ono committee will bo
ready to prcsnnt n form of organization ,
and numerous imp rtant mutters in that
connection are to bo decided upon. The
ollicers are to bo elected Friday night ,
and every ono should bo present to indi
cate his choice , as much depends on a
wise choice of men to take charge of the
entcrpiiuu. The committee on loe.ition
is to report in regard to what rooms or
buildings c.in be secured , and this is like
wise an important question to decide.
The committee on membership will also
have an interesting report. It is believed
that by Friday niglittheiu will bo fully

only those who belong can enjoy its full

not only an enjoyable one in its social
features , but its aim is to help all public
interests.
A Tumble Ou the I'ni-k Turf.
Last evening William Dane , the ISay-
liss park policeman , was subjected to
homo annoyances , and charged Frank
Shoemaker , a youngman who chanced
to be in the park , with being one of the
oll'enders. Ho insisted on young Shoe
maker telling him who the others were ,
and the latter refusing to give an information
mation , threatened to ariest him. This
naturally excited Shoemaker's ire , and
words followed. The park policeman
caught hold of him , and the young man
resisted. In the scrimmage the police
man was bitten as well as bruised. He
called out for another young man to go
after another policeman to help him , and
as the messenger started oil' the
park policeman threatened him if ho
diil not hurry up. The threat
maddened the otherwise willing messen
ger and he concluded that the park
policeman could go himself to police
headquarters , or even a nearer police.
It was sometime before the light was
ended. Then the park policeman lodged
complaints against young Shoemaker
charging him witii assault , with mayhem ,
and with resisting an ollieer. The young
man went free ou his own recognisance ,
to appear to-day.

Arbor Day.
Yesterday was Arbor tree day , or was
supposed to be , but there were no indica
tions of,1(10 ( fact hero. The schools went
nlong with their regular exercises , the
routine duties occupying the time and at
tention. The reasons for not observing
the day are numerous. One is that Coun
cil Bluff's is so far ahead of DCS Moincs
and other places , where the day was ob
served , that such cities will have to pass
a good many Arbor days in planting
trees before they catch up. There is little
tlo need of more trees here. The school
grounds nro well favored in this respect.
There have been n good many trees
planted here by the less sentimental way
of hiring men to do the work. Another
reason is that in view of the interrup
tions caused to many pupils by measles
and other diseases , it was deemed bettor
to improve the day in study and work.
Taken altogether Council Bluffs will be
found fully abreast of those cities which
observed the day in the prescribed man
lier.

Tno Dodge Light Guards were duly
mustered into the state militia last even
ing by Captain M. H. Byors , of Glen-
wood. There were forty thus sworn in.
The company is composed of choice
young men , who cuter upon the drill en
thusiastically , nnd as n company promise
to excel at an early dnte. They will receive -
ceivo their c.rms from the state at onco.
Uniforms have already been ordered and
will soon bo finished. The company ex
pects to make its first public appearance

and babies , were detained at the cit ;
jail for two hours or so and were then le

woman who telephoned and she did no
materialize.
