For the three days thus far wo hayo had a dally average of about 8,000 head , against less than 7,000 last week. The re ceipts this week have Included a very largo proportion of ripe , heavy cattle , though the offerings of Texas cattle have been greater than last week , 'lliebeof cattle trade has been very unsatisfactory , especially for all heavy cattle. Tuesday's sales , compared with Friday , were 25c lower on choice , light eattlo. and as much as lOc on many heavy beeves. The stock market was again narrow , but there was an under current of strength which has been lacking heretofore. Now England , which yosteiday sold down to 55 , advanced 2 per cent this morning , and trading In It was heavier than In anything olso. The story was that whllo insiders nod been selling It down recently , Standard oil people had been picking It up , and the bulge to-day was aided by the efforts of the shorts to cover. Outside of Now Eng land the market was not especially active , but a perceptible hardening in prices ex tended through the entire list. Western Union and the fancy stock , like Fort Worth & Denver , made some notable gains. The bulls continued to talk confidentially of higher prices , and likened the present bear tactics to the ancient custom of the Chinese , who used to go out to tight armed with gongs. All the railroad earnings reported Sot the fourth week ot April showed large gains , ami for the month ot April the state ments were especially good. St. Paul In creased for the month 92-10,033 , St. Louis A Ban Francisco Increased 8111,200. and Mil 1- waukee , Lake ShoreA Western Increased 1r (74,888. London prices for American secur ities were somewhat lower at the opening rc nnd Louisville & Nashville was freely sold dr for foreign account , but later In the day for- olgn buying was again a feature. During the closing hour the market Improved and n small Blind boom was developed. All the active stocks gained Xdfll pur cent. Forl Worth & Denver and Milwaukee , Lak rte Shore & Western made the most notable gain of the day. The list , however , closed Very stiong , at the top price- , for the day The total sales were about 250,000 shares.
