Omaha's first municipal election under
the now charter was characterised by
hard working and light voting. At a
majority of the nineteen polling places
tlio number of workers and ticket ped
dlers outnumbered thu voters at almost
every hour in the day. Less than one-
half of the registered vote was polled.
This was duo to a variety of causes , chief
among which is the fact that a very largo
proportion of the voting population of
Omaha is composed of men who have
moved into the city within the past ytr.ir ,
nnd who consequently have but limited
knowledge of or interest in the issues at
stake in the contests. Then there is a
very largo number of voters who take no
part in local elections. The change in
the boundaries of the various wards and
the further change of the polling places
in the oltl wards did much to
keep many old voters away
from the polls. Thu early hour
of closing the polls was not generally
understood and many voters were shut
out on this account. The workers in
both parties apparently realized this
Btato of affairs and used every possible
means to got out a full vote. Carriages
were kept Hying in every direction con
voying the voters from their homos to
the polls. There was the usual amount
ot cheap chin musio at the various poll
ing places , but no trouble occurred in
any of the wards. A prohibitionist in
the Sixth ward became very demonstra
tive in his arguments in tlio afternoon
nnd was forcibly squelched by an anti of
the pronounced typo. This was the only
outbreak reported during the day. The
1'irst ward polled a light vote and the
workof doing so was performed in a
perfunctory manner. Jn the Second
ward more interest was mani
fested and a larger vote polled.
The closing scones at the Third ward ,
Rccond precinct , were probably the most
interesting of any in the city. At ton
minutes to ( I not less limn 100 men wore
in line waiting to deposit their ballots.
In thu line an occasional working man
could bo Hoon but the majority belonged
to the largo contingent who had been
holding back during the day for proper
inducements. As the ten minutes slowly
crept away the voting progressed rapidly ,
but not sutllcicntly so as to permit moro
lhan thirty of tlio 100 to got their ballots
throtmh the window. At 0 o'clock
the cry arose "Closo the polls , "
and this was mot by a similar cry
"No , no ! keep them open until these men
( vote. " Marshal Ciimmings gave the de
sirous voters two minutes grace and then
ordered tlio judges to close the polls ,
which was done. Thereupon a
loud wail arose and there were
as many protests and as loud from
the men in the line who claimed that
they wore being deprived of tnelr rights as
American citi/.ens as if they had been in
dustriously employed elsewhere all day
instead of sitting around in the immedi
ate vicinity of the polls. Hut their pro
tests were of no avail and their purchased
votes ditl not count. The polls had just
closed when 1' . Ford and Ur. HarUmann
obtained admittance to the judges' room.
'Subsequently after considerable dispute ,
Dave Mercer and ono or two others were
admltted nnd the counting commenced.
Hood votes were polled In both precincts
of the Fourth ward with less 'scratching
than was noticed in some of the other
"wards. In tho-Fifth nnd Sixth wards
light votes worn polled with republican
majorities. The main interest in the
Seventli ward was upon the fight for
oouncilnmnio honors. Aloxundur in the
first district led by a uicu vote which was
khnost equalled by Megoath's load in thu
second 'district. Leo and IJoyd , renubli-
I'can anil democrat , p'oiled largo
, votes for councilnicn - at largo in
both precincts. The scratching fever
'Was very noticeable in both products of
the Eighth ward , thn straight votes
' 'polled being very fdw in number. In tlio
Ninth waru a light was in ado on Kior-
tltcad In the second precinct while in tlio
Hrst piccinct ho carried everything. It
, was evident at 3 o'clock that tlio democ
racy had lost hopn of electing Garnran
for mayor. There was a spasmodic
i. effort at a rally to his support and then
the ranks broke and thu last three hours
of voting trailing of all kinds was in
dulged in for the benefit of minor parties
on the ticket without any regard what
ever for the democratic luul. : : At
vnpon oven money was offered nt the
'Turf Exchange pool rooms that Garneau
ould bo successful. At8 o'clock most
of the money was taken down and nt the
time the polls closml oilers of $10 to $7.00
that llroaoh was elected found no takers.

The nineteenth annual meeting of the
Nebraska State Medical society began in
this city yesterday. In the afternoon the
society met in Masonic hall nt 3 o'clock.

A pretty well posted railroad man said
last evening that ho had little doubt but
that Assistant General Superintendent
Dickinson would bo the successor to Gen
eral Superintendent Smith. "And , " ho
added , "thero would bo nothing moro
natural or appropnato than that W. A.
Douel , division superintendent , should
step into Dickinson's shoes. "
The manner in which these two genial
gentlemen have gone forward by promo
tion in the service ot' the Union Pacific ,
following each other , is somewhat re
markable. Four years ago Ed Dickinson ,
with Bob Baxter as train dispatcher , was
operating the dillicult mountain division
of the Union Pacific from Cheyenne to
Evanston. They had some stormy ex
periences in regulating the trains ever
the high divide , and it was thorn that Mr.
Dickinson demonstrated his great natural
capabilities as a superintendent. Ho
was the idol of all the boys on his divis
ion then , and was noted for his quick ;
recognition of faithful service.
Mr. Deuol had a less dangerous but no
loss dillicult division to operate , from1
North 1'latto to Chovcnno , and upon
many occasions was obligcd to start out
in the middle of the night in the winter
time to fight snow drifts in which trains
had stalled. Ho was always the coolest
and most impurtubable of officials , and in ,
times of the greatest anxiety and per
plexing situations never lost his head , ,
If these two gentlemen should reach
the places of suporintoudcncy of the
whole road , they will handle the business
as it has rarely been handled before.-
They know the Union Pucitio from the
first to the last tie on the main line and
branches as well.
Commercial Hotel Closed.
The Commercial hotel was closed upon
an attachment issued in favqr of credit
ors who hold a chattel mortgage , yester
day. The writ was served by Constable
Edgorton , who took charge of tlio house.
The hotel was in the hands of parties
who leased it from Thrane , the owner ,
some time ago.

John Wilson was given thirty days In
the county jail yesterday morning for
robbing a drunken man of $17. The
robbery was committed in a hack.

November was simply the result of their In-
tontentlon to give up the house , which was
rented. Since she lelf ho had sent her $5
a week and Is supporting the child. The
plaintiff since leaving the house of her
[ athor-ln-l-waw-has been teaching In the
Wilson mission. She was employed there
before marriage.

ST. Louis. May 3. The case of David S.
Pothcrineham , the Adams express messen
ger Indicted for complicity In the robbery of
that company-on the St. Louis & ban Fran
cisco railroad last October , was begun In tlio
criminal court to-day. After the jury was
sworn. Assistant Circuit Attorney McDonald
opened the case for the prosecution In a long
statement , in which no enuuieeatcd the
various things which the state expected to
prove during the trial. Among these Is that
many of tils statements are not cotrcct , all
irolug to show that he was in collusion with
the robbers.

A Strange Killing.
CHICAGO , May a. Seth M. Murdoch , man
ager ot the Boston opera house , fell from
; he roof of the building , corner of Claik and
Uadlson streets , In which the restaurant Is
