The improvement up to 1 o'clock was only j c over last night's rloslng , but there was u stronger undertone and a pretty liberal trade , mostly local , however , and In the way oi changes , with a very general desire to Bell Alay and buy more deferred deliveries. The effect of Gould's utterances was to entirely change the character ot the market. Gould stocks moved up and wcro quickly followed by a sharp advance In some of tlio fancy stocks. Fort Worth & Denver gained 3 per cent , and Colorado coal 2 per cent. The trunk lines and grangers were especially active nnd higher , closlne nt the lop prices for the day.
