it fainted I' ' f'Jl c higher tlmn May and tl.o
two months were 1J anart at 1 o'clock.
Trading was on a moderate scale nnd the
feeling was nervous. It la an open secret
that no very lnr o amount of clique wormy
has bcnii brought to thu city yet to take care
of May wlinnt and the Information Is now
common property that the local banks have
boon unwilling to meet the demands for
money to carry grain tliat have been mtulo
upon tlirin witnln many millions of dollars.
This Is the news the local spucnl.itlvo leaders
were "onto" several Jays ago and the break
found them "loaded for bulls. " When the
price cot down low enough to let them out
, with a small prollt or without loss ,
they hastened to close up their long standing
open trades In May and get Into later
months. On the break yesterday several
heavy lines of Chicago and Now York wheat
wore cornered , and commission houses act-

the market continued fcravy and
jiiIces showed a further depreciation
of % c all around In futures.
Trading was on a generous scale throughout
the session and the lluctuatlons weio within
an Insignificantly narrow range , nine-tenths
ol the business pusslni ; in May corn being

There was a laree amount of changing over

nt any time during the past two weeks. A
low trades In May pork were changed over
to Junoat C'Jl.OO , but for May nnd Juno the
general quotation was S20.75 ( 31.00. In both
lard aim short ribs the feeling showed in
creased strength , and In lard particularly
the tendency was rattier sharply upward.
This article rested at 1 o'clock at

reported an increase In their orders. Sales
of 10 Ib sweet pickled hams were made nt

TonK , April 28. [ Special Telegram
to the BKK.I STOCKS. The stock market
was rather quiet to-day , the bulk of trading
being confined to Northwest. New Eng
land , and Klchmond Terminal , Several
lories wore current In explanation of the
advance In Northwestern. One report had
U that the Milwaukee , hake Shore and Wes
tern had been purchased by the Northwest
ern company , while another story was that a
consolidation with the Omaha company Is
on tbo cards. Both common and preferred
stock advanced , but sold off again before the
close. It was reported that Insiders In New
England were again buying , and that
another bull movement In It was about to bo
started. Colorado coal moved up to 47 % , the
highest point touched this year , and hake
Erie & Western and Kingston & Pembroke
were hhchcr , although very dull. A favor
able feature In the market was the reduction
lu the Dank of England rata of discount to
9 per cent. Money was reported easy , and
the only opposition to an advance in prices
was alleged to come from a well organized
bear party , which sold stocks on every rally.
At noon the market was rather soft. The
stoppage of telegraphic communication with
the country , occasioned by the storm , made
trading very dull durlnz the close f the day.
The bear contingent seized the opportunity
to sell the market off , and it fractional do -
cllno in about everything was secured. The
news ot the day was not calculated to affect
prices much cither way. The close was
steady at about opening prices. The sales
Vf era about 250,000 shares.
UovicnNMBJiTS-Governraont bonds were
dull out steady.
