that Chicago detectives were trying to
sccuro specimens of his handwriting ,
supposedly for the English government.
Iu replv ho said : "I will tell you some
thing auout the allair that 1 have novcr
given out for publication beforo. I am
positive that attcmuts have boon made
by detectives to obtain specimens of my
handwriting. Several weeks ago Mr.
( naming the editor of a local paper ) received -
coived a letter from n Chicago
cage party asking whether ho know
mo and whether lie would , if so , under
take to procure specimens of my hand
writing. The gentleman wrote back that
ho did Know me , but that ho wasn't in
the key-hole business nnd would not un
dertake to procure any specimens of my
chirojrrnnhy. A little alter that , Mr.
Patrick Urennan , of this city , who was
known to bo a warm personal friend of
mine was approached by two gentlemen
one known to him as a local detective ,
the other a strarger supposed to bo an
eastern detective. The tvyo asked Mr.
ISronnau to procure specimens of my
writing , but this that gentleman refused
to do. Other attempts have been made
to procure some of my letters. A
friend of mine in Chicngo
was also approached about
the same time and asked to got hold of
aino specimens of my penmanship. Ho
also snubbed the man who made tlio re
quest , who was a Chicago detective.
Whether the Pinkerton agency is respon
sible for this I don't know. If some of
those men had como to mo direct , they
would have been given samples of my
handwriting. 1 Have nothing to be
ashamed of in that direction. "

don Times. The Parnell letter published

Harvey struck out for Now York city

lie lauded in Chicago he stayed a weclr ,
continuing his ctrccr of dissipation. Ho
then bought a ticket for Omaha , andMon-
diiy night woke up in tins city , sober for the
lirst time in two weeks. Ho did not have
a penny , and , is ho says , was literally
"stranded. " A number of sympathizers
with the desolate tar raised a small pur.se
and paid for his night's lodging. An ef
