sellers to-day , anil "pegging" the market to
prevent an advance , just as last week they
"pegged" It to prevent n decline. Mav wheat
wasat 81'fc ' at the very opening to-day , with
very little olierlng. On Sunday the crowd
felt for a long while that by persistent ham
mering it could get this option down under
84c , and tried pertinaciously to dolt. There
was an Improved tone to cables anil the ptos-
pects for a substantial decrease In thu "visi
ble" were good long before the otllchl figuios
\\cro made public. But these Inlluences had
nothing to do with the advacn of Ic In the
May option over Sunday. This was because
faith in the wheat clique \v.i increasing. It
the clique brokers hod not iclieved the ten
sion it Is not easy to tell wheio May wheat
would have gone to. AtW e Korshaw sold
liberally and sold until the maiket wasdown
tote ib'c. Dwlght & ( illlctte had a selling
order lor .somebody In May and tlio crowd
* took this. The crowd wanted it all. The
official figures , putting the decrease In wheat
at 1IK5M)0 ! , ) bushels , gave a little Impetus to
the mr.ikct and sent June toSl'.fc. ' Theio was
just a little icaction after this , but it did not
Uiiimtut to anything. The news that the
clique was making Us arrangements with the
biukslor ; not only lliu mouth of ilay , but
for June and .Inly , gave the crowd courage.
There is not any longer , In the minds of any
body , a doubt that the clique will take cash
wheat. This , however , Is about the only
tiling that Is universally admitted. Theio IB
even the wildest sort of a division over
whether May , Juno or July Is to .see the cul
mination of the manipulation. Tlio clique
traders themselves ( and this is one ot the
( jueeiest features of the deal ) are apparently
ns much In the diuk over this point as any
body else. This is explicable because Uos-
cnfcld it Co. , tor Instance , have had no
orders except In May. Some other of the
clique houses have had orders apparently to
changeover all their May either to June or
July. Part of tlio gossip going about to-day
was that one ot the cliques some people be
lieve there are two made a proposition to
the stronger and bigger of the two to com
bine. Tlio proposition , the story ran , was
rejected on the ground that it was too late
for combinations ; but if wheat was tor sale ,
the bigger clique added , It could be hold out
in the pit and would be bought there.

Tlio Week.
The receipts of cattle dining the week past
have lueraued very light nnd the niMket haa
been dull and slow the greater pait of the
time. Prices were about steady during the
whole week , there being very little change
until Saturday , when the market took an up
want tendency. The receipts of hoes have
been liberal during the week , and upon the
whole the market has been very talr , al
though it experienced quite a heavy decline

the pens cleared.
Cattle.
The cattle market to-da'y was active nt ar
advance of at least 10e on good , handy la
cattle. There was a good demand and th <
buyers were In the yards early In the morn
lug. Everything was sold out early. Buteh
era stock was also in better request and went
nt stronger prices.
There wore n few loads sold early to-day a
n shade stronger prices than on Satuiday. .

There has been a scarcity of the leading
articles of produce , and a lirm market has

piices continuing very steady on most lines ,
noticeably so on butter , ezgs ana poultry.
In vegetables then ) has been some
change owing to the arrival ot homo grown
stock on the market , which always loweis
the prices. Stiawberrles are also lower on
account of the arrival of stock grown near
this point. Other lines of produce veiy
steady as cjuoted below.
