THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; WEDNESDAY , APKIL 20 , 1887. A DAY OF DISAPPOINTMENT The Expected Solution of tbo May Wheat Deal Fails to Materialize ! THE CLIQUE OUT OF THE PIT. Prediction * ) Thut Corn Witt Improve With the Opening of Navigation K\n ( \ nnil Lnrtl Weak IMarkct ( Quotations. CHICAGO pitonucn MAUKHT. CmcAno , April 10. [ Special Telejrram to the Hr.K. ] CAIILI : Long before the openIng - Ing this morning there wns a fccline abroad In the ofllccs , on the sidewalk and fairly In the nlr , tlmt this was to be a day In which a great many open questions around the wheat jilt was to be decided. It was , for Instance , irunerally believed tieforu the opening It the brokers for the clique were found to bo In the pit helllnir again to-day on n very liberal scale , that the price would bo pretty curtain to collapse. This expectation of something occurring which would bo decisive was not Indulged In alone by the "bobtnll" operators. Good , substantial people looked at the pros pect In the same way. They were also of the opinion that before night It would be settled whether the clique propose to take the cash wheat on .May 1. Kvotj body , Indeed , thought tlie soundness of the whole much-vaunted May deal was to bo tested. The opening of the market was not exactly as the pit would liked to have seen It. It was a sort of uncer tain beginning that decided nothing and cleaied up the doubts ot no one. May began at WJ c , dropped at once to 82c , then advanced to KJJfc. Hut the clique brokers were nowhere around. If they had been buyers , that might have settled something ; If they liad been sellers , that would hn\o borne out the ueneral expectation. As It was , everjbody was disappointed. The opening signified nothing. As the day ad vanced wheat , Instead of going to pieces. firmed up. Tlio clearances at the seaboaid were disappointing. No wheat v.entoutof Now Yoik , none out of Halthmnc and only 3,246 bushels out ot Philadelphia. At Dutroit the opening of navigation there started out 620,550 bushels to-day , with 1,000,000 bushels inoru to follow to-moiiow. The princlpil featurii of the day was the strength of the May deal. The rliqwi hrokeis not only did not appeal to sell wheat , but while they were out ot the pit , the maiket took on a ittroug phase of Itself. Cables were easy , but no- conllng to New Yoik dispatches a coed expert - port buslnesi was dutnir there. Twenty-live boat loads were repotted taken up to 1 o'clock. In com thu mice Is Fullering from the Mirrpiideilni : ot May longs. Good atithoiltv pajs this main Is now on a ship ping basis. The market has been hint Homo by thu late opening of navigation , but another week will preltv certalnlv fee the Heel moving out ot bete with 2,000,000 bushels ot Chicago stock. If the receipts then contlnun as small as they are now them might naturally como an impiovoment In price. Itlbs and lard were both weak under pressure to unload "long" May contracts and to got Into further options. Mliu maikets on the aitetnoon board were nnsettlt'd. The velum of trading In Heading was Urge , but ther was very little advance In price and thestor wa that Philadelphia parties who had beei largely Instrumental In bilnglng about th recent 10 point advance were realizing. Th buying , however , was good enough to absor all offering around 47. PaclUc Mail wa bulled on the prospect that the suspension o the long and short haul clause of the Intel state commerce law would soon bo revoke by the commission. The stoiy about the Is Buoot some 53,000,000 New England pit { erred stock caused liberal selling ot com u > on stock , resulting In a sharp break. Tin most significant news of the day was the fac that all railroad earnings , with unlmportan exceptions , showed large Increases , wherea it has been expected that the effect of th Inter-state law would , be a very general di crease. For the second week of April SI Louis it San Francisco Increased 850,03 ( Louisville it Nashvlilo Increased § 11,400 , SI Paul Increased 807,000 and the smaller road made corresponding gains.
