There was just a little suspicion this morning Hint the bulls had soi/ed the signal service bmrau. All thc.presM dispatches this morning .show that there were light rains In various parts of California. The signal service man did not show any rain at all in Callfomla-not a drop. There was just n little dampening down admitted nt Detroit nnd another at Louisville and another at Cleveland. The rest of the country was left , so fur ns the weather man's figures and colored chalk lines were concerned , ns dry us n bone. When traders walked up to the map and saw no rain any where they hurried oil and bought wheat. ' 1 hat started May at MJfc nnd made it , touch fcS jfc. It was not until homebody questioned the fallibility of the map that anybody dared sell much. Then the price went up to 6-'c. Although Good 1'ilday Is to bo n holiday , naturally a clear circumstance , nnd although speculation during the bcssioii was very In active , It was from opening to close a dull day. May wheat once or twice went above b3 'c. A cable to Korslmw & Co. Hald that It was pretty well fcet- tlcd that the English harvests would be , because of bad weather , several weeks late. The clique brokers wore bujers of Juno and July options to-day , and these advanced and became quite strong , while May did not budge. The cleaianccs were large 255,000 wishcls-and the export business reported from New York was also large for the day. In com there was a strong lecling und May sold once or twice to lOc. Oats have Htcadlcd and advanced by the diy weather , and so has wheat With all thu pits around it advancing , corn could not help sympathize somewhat. But stocks arc what ttio big men are bearish on. Them will bo 12,000OW ) bushels of corn In store here Mon day , with no cash demand and with the May option selling 5'.fc above April. In about two weeks thatpiemlum will either have to disappear irom May or ulso June will have to advance so that carriers will lake care of the cash . corn ii , hero May 1. There has boon a rush of corn herofiom Nebraska because of the new Inter-state law , but the receipts from Illinois have not boon affected and Illinois corn , which Is sold hero lor May , will soon swell the icccipts again. CHICAGO , April 7. | Special Telegram to the BEE. ] CATTM5 It was quite a common saying to-day that the market was no better than yesterday , and trade was certainly any thing but buoyant. At the same time cattle which could not ba bold yesterday were sold to-day , and steady prices for stale cattle are always considered better , while there woio half a dozen eastern buyeis In the market who were doing nothing yesterday. Early in the morning buyers said that cattle would bo dull and lower and many salesmen so re garded the outlook , and not a few telegrams were sent out that way. But , compared with yesterday's stagnation , the market to-day was very active. There was a very large vol ume of business , and buyers who held off yesterdav and Tuesday had to have cattle. Even with heavy receipts the remainder of the week , the offerings for the week will bo light. Eastern shippers bought more cattle fo-day than they have since three weeks ago to-day. However , sales were made unevenly. Some cattle for which fair bids were received yesterday had to be sold lOc lower to-day , and there were a few choice heavy cattle that could not bo sold to-day for anything like satlslactory prices. The stock market opened fairly active this morn ing with an Improved tone , attributed In part to the action of the inter-stato commission- ersthe suspension for ninety days of the long and short haul clause In cases of such roads as requested It being construed as favorable to the railroad Interests. London was quite a iberal bujcr.and there was a'gencral advance In almost the entire list. St. Paul & Duluth - luth showed unexpected strength , opening } { per cent above last night's close and advancing ; ! , ' ' points during the morn ing , when It eased oil somewhat. This was Mil United to favorable news , It being said that common and preferred stockholders Ima at last reached an agreement , and that a div idend will bo declared on the common stock In July. It was said that the road had been tusking a coed showing for some time past and that the earnings would show a sub stantial Increase with the opening of naviga tion , Gould was down to-day and was said to bo looking well , lie Is going to take a trip over his western and southwestern roads In a few flays , and denies that ho has been selling stocks , ( leorco Gould said last night their southwestern roads were doing all the husl- neks they could handln. The earnings on the Northern Pacific for the 1st day of April ( showed an increase over the corresponding day last y ! ir of 518,000. It Is said that per fect harmony now reigns betx > een the Penn sylvania and Reading roads , and that they are In thorough accord concerning anthra cite and bituminous coal business for the en suing year. StoutCo. say Green Bay & AVIunna Is a full card among the cheap stocks and that It Is a food purchase. The Pitts- burg Dispatch said that the Pennsylvania company hao resumed the solo of through tickets over the Chicago , Burlington A Qulncy , the Hannibal A St. Joe , the Council Uluflu and the Northern Pacific roads. A re port was current that a dividend on Paclllc Mall would bo declared on thu 14th , but Pres ident Houston declined to either deny or con firm It. There was very good buying of St Paul and Northwestern to-day. For the same time fit P ul * Duluth earnings decreased $183 , but the month showed an Increase of $0,305. Wabash preferred was marked up about IK points and St. Louis & San Fran cisco preferred , gained about as much. St. Paul finally closed about 1 point higher , but the Northwcstcrn's advance of a point was nearly all lost. Heading sold elf somewhat from the top , closing with a net gain ofi per cent for the day , while the rest of the list generally showed an advance of about half a point. In addition to the fresh receipts therci were about twenty loads of stale hogs on the market. The market was 10(7i5c lower and was slow at the decline. Manning - ning , la. , was hero \\ltli hogs , their lust shipment. The Inter-state commerce law has made a changu in thu rates between Omaha and Chi cago. All stock rcbllled from South Omaha to Chicago has to go at the local rate , S70 on cattle and SCO on Tioge.
