Yesterday morning an interesting case
\ras on trial In the county court. A man
named PC tor Van lluren , aged about
forty-iivo years , was the defendant in a
case in which it was sought to prove that
ho is a spendthrift and MiotiUl be placed
in charge of a guardian. Uno'of tiio
loading witnesses was ( r. W. Mellinger ,
n justice of the peace at Firth , where also
Van Uiiron resides , lie testified that he
liad frequently seen Van Huron under the
inllucnco of drink , and was severely
cross-examined by Mr. llurr. It seems
that Van liurcn has been acting in a
manner which attracted the atleution of
his neighbors to such a degree that it was
supposed ho was no longer able to con
trol himself. A short time ago ho
received a pension of $1,800 and since
that time ho has been in receipt of a
monthly pension of about $1'J. It is
claimed that , notwithstanding this largo
pension , Van Huron is no better off now
than ho had been before ho received his
pension. The petition to have Van
liuron deprived of his right to care for
himself is sought to bo removed on the
atrcngtu of a petition signed by about
thirty people residing near him. The
spectacle of the poor old man is sad to bo
contemplated.
A nearly analogous cnso was found
yesterday before the board of insanity.
An old man , full of vigor , loading the
life of a bachelor on a farm near Wood-
lawn , was charged with being insana by
a neighbor named Otto Webb. The latter
formerly kept a saloon in this city , and
it seems that between him and the old
man the best of feeling docs not exist.
Wood claims that at times when ho is
out shots come very near him from Webb's
gun , nnd Webb says that whenever
he fires his gun if Moore is at home , the
latter seizes his gun andUircs out of the
house in the direction whence comes the
Bound of Moore's shot. The old man
tolls a straightforward tale and seems
not to bo at all disturbed by the accusa
tion. Tno case against him was not a
Tory strong one , and Webb seemed to
favor a postponement till to-morrow to
bring other witnesses. It is thought in
view of the shooting which has already
transpired that a serious meeting may
yet take place.

ilonrv T. Clark , of Omaha , is in the
city looldng after his largo interests. It
is said , that ho will commence to build as
Boon as his material arrives. Ho has
ordered several hundred thousand brick
from St. Louis. The buildings which
Mr. Clark , will build will be for whole-
Bale and jobbing houses. Ho has the
best property andmost useful corners in
the city for that purpose.
K. 11. Andrua is building three fine
residence houses on 1C and Seventeenth
treots.

John Shcody is preparing to build a
three story bricfc building on-P street
over the ruins that remain of his building
burned a few nights ago.
'Iho Young Men's Christian association
yesterday purchased 100x110 feet on the
corner of N and Thirteenth streets for
$45,000 , | 20,000 cash down and the bal
ance on long time. It is the intention of
the association to build a fine four story
brick building and to rent all but a portion
tion of the lip-stairs , which will be re
served for the use of the society as a hall ,
library , reading room , oto.

Charles Hammond's , Frank Shedon's ,
J. D. McFarland's and many other ex
pensive and gorgeous palaces are in tbo
course of construction , and it is safe to

elegant mansions this summer in this

AFTER APPOINTMENT.
Judge Tucker and Mr. Kinkaid , of the
now judicial district , are bore as appli
cants for appointment for the position of
judge. Both gentlemen appeared to bo
well endorsed , both by members of the
bar in that district and the influential
political loaders of both parties. The
governor will probably make the ap
pointment to-day or to-morrow , and it 13
I ) generally believed that Judge Tucker
* Will bo the lucky man.
A11OUT THE CIT.
Several parties have already made ap
plication to purchase the bonds which the
city will shortly issue for paving pur
poses. It is not settled yet whether they
will bo an absolute 0 per cent twenty
year or an optional 0 nor cent bond.
Parties who hare handled large quantities
of these bonds inform members of the
council that u G per cent absolute would
ell far easier and to bettor advantage
than a 0 per cent optional , as absolute
time of payment security is esteemed fai
nbovo an optional socurny even though
the latter boars greater rate of interest.
