CHICAGO , March V . | Spcclal Telegram to
tlio ItBR. ] Kerslmw , the lender of the clique
broken , opened wheat up this morning at
81c. halo last night on the curb the -jrowd
was soiling wheat fairly at WKc and It came
down tills morning cxpectln * to irct under
this figure. The price was moved up early
simply by Keruhaw's bidding , llo needed to
buy very little itraln. The sentiment Is as
mixed as ever over the purposes of the clique ,
nnd as to whether It Is buying now because
It wants wheat and behoves It cheap , or be
cause It must buy to make a market to sell
on. If the former were the case the crowd
cannot see why the buying Is not done
secretly Instead of openly and by Kcrshaw.
The latter can not get much wheat without
the scalpers tailing right after him and ad
vancing the price. Thn crop situation is beginning
ginning to cut a more and more Important
liKurc. The extraordinary dryness of the
month Is becoming so apparent that It Is no
longer a matter to be argued over , and If It
lasta ten days longer will afford the bull *
great aid. The clearances at fthe seaboard
617,250 bushels were so heavy that the wheat
pit , after their arrival , needed no clique sup
port The market stood of It
self , and the llgures ontlio "vis
ible decrease" began at once to bo
Increased. Just before the close Korshaw
caino into the nit and apparently had hU cus
tomary 1,000,000 bushel order. Ills bids
quickly advanced May from 81 > < c to 81c ,
. > where It closed. It Is said that three separate
, /S'H / > ool3 were made up early this morning to
r laid wheat and break the prioo down under
the 80c ligure , where the clique has stood
guard. If It is true that these pools were
made up , It is certain that they gave UD the
raid. They were probably frlehtcned on by
big clearances. A Now York broker was on
ihe floor looking for cash wheat. Ue came
n here. It Is said , supposing that the clique
would sell him cash under the market If ho
would only guarantee to ship It , but ho found
himself mistaken. Ho offered up to the mar-
kot. but wouldn't pay commissions , and did
not get his wheat. He had engaged litty cars
of Lake Shore at 20c. In corn the receipts
wore largo enough to make the price easier ,
but now and then the corn pltcuts loose from
Its own statistics and goes up or down slm-
.ply out of sympathy with wheat. This was
why the Mav option was so steady to-day at
0&t9 : c. Provisions were altogether un-
ovoutful.

that during the past two or three weeks ho

his name and Influence are Identified. The
baukstatement to-day was expected to be un
favorable , but when It came in the market
Improved a little on thn surprise that It was
no worse. It was stated that the presidents
o ( trunk lines would meet In Now York
1'neaday and try to get thu Grand Trunk to
cancel its notices of withdrawal. The most
conservative and best railroad people In that
city do not regard with alarm the action of
the Grand Trunk road , oven If it decides to
remain on the outside. According to a
Cleveland dispatch a Lake Shore official with
information said that within three months
rates would be demoralized worse than for
years. Large holders ot Pullman lu Boston
have little conihlenco In the rumors of an
extra dividend. It was intimated , the dis
patch sald.that thocompany has an Interest In
the Baltimore & Ohio deal , and that 8500,000

at par to provide new cars for tint road.
Louisville & Nashville advanced a point , and
there were bull points on It and also on Richmond
mend Terminal. The earnings /or the third

to show an Incrme of about 8-W.OOO. The
other roads showed Increases for that period ,
that of St Paul & Duluth being f 10.017 , of

held up well all day. There were no feat
ures to afternoon trade , the advances of the
morning being generally well maintained.
Northwestern took a spurt of % per cent and
thrro remained pegged at the advance for
some time. The strength In this stock was
partly attributed to the talk of an extra divi

OH All A. WHOLESALE MAKRETS
Saturday , March SO.
General Produce.
T7ie following prices are for round lots of
producers sold on the market tn-aay. The
quotation * on fruits represent the prices at
whlcli outside orders are filled.
BUTTEH Butter has been scarce all the
week. Even the poorer grades are not com
ing in such abundance as a week or two ago.
There Is an active demand for choice butter
nnd all such sells quickly on arrival. The
market Is accordingly stronger than lost
week. Shippers must bear In mind that the
quotations for choice butter are for butter
that Is strictly choice and sweot. A HUlo
more care In making and handling the but
ter would Increase Its value from 3c to 5c per
lb aud It would sell more readily nnd at bet
ter prices. An occasional package of fancy
butter sells at better prices than those quoted
below. Choice country , 17@18c ; fair to good ,
13@15c ; common , 5@10c.
Eoos The egg market has been very
steady during the past week. The market Is
In about the same condition as a week ago.
The receipts have averaged very heavy and
while the local retail demand Is good and tbo
shippers Imvo been taking til the surplus
stock , so that notwithstanding the heavy re
ceipts there has been no accumulation of
stocks. The ruling price Is lOc and the mar
ket can be called active at that price. Re
ports trom other markets Indicate a decline
but as yet the effect has not been felt here.
DRESSED POULTRY The receipts have
been light and Hie market flrm. Chickens
have been in eood demand and good stock
has sold readily at lOc. In a tew Instances
extra choice stock has brought He. Small fat
turkeys have been selling at 10@llc , and
coarse heavy turkeys at 9@10c. The demand
is mostly In a small way as live poultry Is
coming In season and it Is only due . to the'
extremely light receipts that the above prices
have been obtained.
LIVE POULTHV The receipts of live poul
try have been very light thus far as the sea
son Is not fairly opened. There Is a very fair
demand nnd everything received thus far has
sold readily on arrival. Good heavy fowls or
chickens have sold at S3.00@3.35 pcrdoien ,
while a few choice have gene at 83.50. There
Is not much demand for turkeys but those re
ceived have sold at 0(3Sc ( per lb. There have
been a few large ducks in which brought
53.00 per dozen.

In addition to the car lots received by the
commission dealers , the local fanners have
been running in a eood many aud soiling
direct to retailers. This has tended to break
the market , as the stock brought In by the
farmers has been sold by them at very low
prices , In some Instances as low as 35c. At
the present time it Is difllcult to give a quo
tation on account of the demoralized condi
tion of the market. Commission dealers are
