diverted themselves with the other pits to-day.
The May option of short ribs , which yesterday
forenoon was down to S7.57 } , with every
body anxious to sell , was up to-day to 33.10
nnd with the prlco going up so fast that tail-
ers tried but dared not catch on. In lard
there was not ns inucli activity. In the corn
pit the receipt of only 5b2 cars , where nearly
700 bad been predicted , Bent the price up Kc
within a very few minutes. Wheat alone
was neglected. It opened nt bO > fc nnd was
not much traded In. The whole east was cut
off because of a telegraphic blockade nnd
that has always n depressing influence. The
Interest centered largely In short ribs. May
Bold nt ) to 83.20 and It looked as If everybody
in the trade had sold short. At 1 o'clock
they closed at 5S.07J and May lard atS7.42 K
Wheat didn't vary aboveKC purbu during the
whole of the regular session. It Fold ns low

telling by Lester it Co. , but theie appeared
to be plenty of buyers nt this figure nnd It

closed nt Mljfc. The dullness of the markets

later does not want to wait long for his
profit , and the holders of wheat have now
waited several weeks. The predictions from
New York art ) that the clearances this week
will not be larce. nnd the figures .so far no a
long way toward bearing tills out. There
were only 47bOO bushels of wheat cleared
from New York to-d.ty. but it is one of thn
rciunrknhlc facts that nlmost Invariably when
New York cluaiances drop down to a low
ligiirc , Philadelphia and Baltimore get out a
good deal , and this was the case today.
Still , a much longer prolongation of tills
speculative dullness will , to n certainty , start
hell inc. Inactivity here Is Invariably associ
ated in the speculative mind with weakness.
There will have to come very soon n raid or

the BIK. : ] CATTLE. Uecelpts to-day were
surprisingly light , hut the receipts for the
week show an Increase of 4,500 cattle. Ho ?
receipts are the same as last week. The
markets are stronger and both cattle and
good hoes sold lOc higher. Very few per
sons would have believed if told that to-day's
receipts of cattle would show so large a fall
ing oil less than half as many cattle as were
here Monday. Some salesmen thought they
had been too hasty In granting concessions
yesterday and tried to make It up to-day.
The general demand was fairly good , though
It was evident that buyers were afraid to
show much anxiety to-day lest prices should
get away from them asalu In another sharp
upward flight. However , the market was
stronger , and there was a great difference in
sales as there Is in salesmen and buyers.
The market was active and prices

NEW YonK , March 22. [ Special Telegram
to the BKK.J STOCKS. The stock market
opened itrm but dull , and until well along
towards noon trading was on a very limited
scale , London was dolne nothing. Room trad
ere were bullish on some of the specialties , and
after any action at all began the general list
showed a suinll advance. Lack n wanna. New
York Central , and Omaha , both common and
preferred , evinced the most strencth of the
more active stocks , aside from Pullman ,
which was marked up 2)1 per cent from the
opening. For this latter appreciation no
theory was advanced. Cotton seed oil certifi
cates were thn exception to the general
strength , selling on * about \4 points from
the opening , then reacting until half the loss
was recovered. The total sales to noon were
62,000 shares. The afternoon wore away un
eventfully. Omaha common eased off to
about the opening figure and cotton seed oil
certificates weakened a little. Pullman held
up well and Lackawannn maintained the
most of Us improvement. Thu total sales for
the dav were 134.247 shares.

Cattln.
The receipts ot cattle were double what
they were yesterday. The market opened
strong and fully 5c higher and advanced un
til it was fully lOo higher than yesterday's
market. The market was active and the bulk
of thu receipts chanced hands early In the
day. About twelve loads were left over , In
cluding the late arrivals which came in too
Into for to-day's market. One bunch of
choice corn fed steers brought $4.70.

The receipts of hoes lleht
were to-day ow
ing no doubt to the discouraging reports sent
out into the country yesterday. The buyers
were nil on the market to-day and the de
mand was good. The market was active at
an advance of 5(3100-over ( yesterday's mar
ket The demand was mostly for heavy
hogs and the advance was felt more on that
grade than on the light weights. The hogs
were nil sold early In the day and the pens
cleared.

lessening the demand somewhat for dressed
poultry and at the same time Is Increasing the
demand for live poultry. Dressed chickens
are selling mostlv at lOc with an occasional
sale of extra stock at a little more. Turkeys
and ducks hare been selling at about the
same price as chickens. A few small , fat
turkeys have sold at lie.
LIVE POULTRY Choice chickens sold at
Si50 to-day.
GAME Ducks are becoming quite plenty
and are selling fairly well. There are also a
good many geese coming In. There are a
good many brants on the market and they
