THE DEATH OF BEECHER.
The Action of thn Congregatlond !
Preachers Criticised Xo-Day's
School Election A Smoul
dering Fire.
Ilccelicr's Death.
In view of the action taken a short
time ago by some of the Congregational
ministers of Chicago , declining to give
formal expression of condolence to Mrs.
Needier , considerable interest has been
awakened as to the sentiments of other
ministers , especially of that denomina
tion. At the Congregational church here
yesterday morning the pastor , Kov.G.W.
Crofts , in his opening prayer , remem
bered the sorrowing family very ten
derly , and oll'crcd a sympathizing peti
tion for the church deprived of so great
and beloved a pastor. His sermon was
on "The Spirit of Christ. " Ho showed
Christianity not to consist in mere rules
of living , mere ceremonies , set forms of
action , or technical statement of belief ,
but to consist rather in causing men to
bo inspired by the spirit of Christ. The
inner man must be actuated by the mo
tives that governed Christ's life. Men
could not do what Christ did , but
they could do as he did. He then
outlined .some of the leading characteris
tics of Christ's spirit , one of which was
humility , another complete ! subjection to
( iod's will , and another charity , or love.
In speaking of the need of great charity ,
and tliu duty of not only loving ( ! oil but
man , the preacher spoke very plainly of
the action of the Congregational minie-
ters in Chicago. He said ho had no stones
to throw , but that he felt that they made
a great mistake. Some of them feared
that if they adopted resolutions of .sym
pathy with Mrs. Needier they might pos
sibly be considered as endorsing to some
extent some of the views and teach
ings of the great preacher , which
were not considered entirely orthodox.
He deemed such a fear foolish and
groundless but had it been well founded ,
even more , had it been that by express
ing such smypathy they would have been
put outside the church , or even perse
cuted , they ought the more readily to
have done so. if men in the pulpits could
not express sympathy for sutlering or
sorrow , the sooner such men got out of
tliu pulpit , or nuch pulpits wore got out
of the church , the better for the world.
Christ's spirit was emi of sympathy , and
this should permeate the church life , and
it was always not only proper , but a
duty , to show it forth at all times.

A Smouldering Pirn.
A little after 5 o'clock yesterday morn
ing an alarm of lire was sounded. It ap
pears that ever since the lire which do-
strayed eleven of Messrs. Stow.irt &
Sons' thoroughbred horses at the driving
park two weeks ago last night there has
been fire smouldering about the ruins ,
and yesterday morning it bla/cd up and
word was telephoned from the North
western depot , which is the best station
for reporting lires that is in this city The
department responded , as the report they
received was that in the distance it
looked like a small building , but on their
arrival found it to be the remains of
what once contained the finest stable of
horses that were ever in the west. Sat
urday evening Chief Templeton de
spatched two men to look after the ruins ,
which had been considered to bo free
from fire , and after scattering it some
they returned. As there is no chance of
getting water connections for a long dis
tance no lioso has been Jaid since tliu fire
but as manure had been piled up around
the outside of the stable and sod put on
top , the lire kept smothered until yester
day morning , when it showed itself.
Even should it have had a good headway
no damage would have buon done , the
other buildings at the driving park being
located at a considerable distance.
Contractors and builders will find it to
their interest to get prices on lime ,
