THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; SUNDAY , MARCH 13. 1887. TWELTE PAGES. SATURDAY MARKET FIGURES , Doll With Specalfttho Values Tend ing Downward , CORN MODERATELY ACTIVE. May Pork Ilcninlns Immovable , nut Lard Ilccords a Ills Drop HORS Active Both Tor 1'acklni : and Shipping. CHICAGO 31ARKET. CnicAOo , March H.-Speclal [ Telegram to the HEK.J Wheat market was dull to-day and speculative values tended downward , though no serious break In prices occurred. Moro deferred futures were especially weak. The muscle under May gave to that month the appearance of finnuess. Itangc was S'-'c at the opening , 82 fc high , 81c low , and Ste at the close. Calves w ere quiet nd seaboard and western markets exhibited signs of weakness. The wheat trade of the whole country Is clinging around the neck of Chicago cage Slay Instead of trying to stand alone. The prevailingbciJcf i ! t there Is a "deal" In May has induced quite a number 6f oonsvrV * atlvo commission merchants to dlsr.ouraco further dealings In that month and to clear tlielr hooks or trades In May as far as pos sible. The general run of operators have not yet become accustomed to the later months , and a considerable percentage of those who had been Induced to withdraw from May are watching the market and doing nothing. Scalpers , of course , continue to trade In May and tlpiro Is yet considerable business being done in the way of closing up open trades In that month , but the May deal seems to bo rapidly degenerat ing Into a gamble. Statisticians were figuring on the visible to-day and the pre dictions of the decrease for tlio week vary from 1,000.000 to 1,500,000 bushels. With one day yet to hear from , seaboard clearances ex ceed 1,000,000 bushels , which Is half a million less than last week , while western points re ceipts exceed those of last week by a quan tity nearly as large. Shipments from west ern and Interior points are also heavy , showIng - Ing that the railroads are encouraclng a free movement of uraln before the Inter-state commerce bill goes Into effect. Corn was moderately active and despite the efforts of local houses to bull the market It saeccd quite heavily , leadlmt futures closing & ( < 5J c below last night. Trading was mainly of the Bcalplnif sort. The offerings also Included a good deal of the long corn bought several days ago by the provision crowd. The tine weather nnd estimates of 310 cars for Monday lielpoi matnrlally to weaken values. A linn here controlling thirty elevators lu NcbrasKa reports enormously laue deliveries from farmers' hands this week and with western railroads offering very low rates from Mis souri points It is regarded as certain that largo amounts of corn will bo shipped during the next twenty days that has been sold for May delivery. The trade be.ro at any rate Is . basing Its calculations upon a movement of this kind. May opened at 41c , sold off to 40 > < c and closed at 4040jc. Oats ruled dull and a shade lower. Mav pork remained Immovable to day , but a big drop In lard and a moderate decline in ribs occurred. Themarkotopened stnadv at about the closing range for the preceding day , and no great desire to trade was shown in any quarter. Tlio offerings of lard increased , however. A few thousand tierces of lard were dumped and the bears seized upon the opportunity presented to make a drive at tbo market. May was forced down from S7.M to (7.5Qi and June from S7.1KJ to 7.55. May closed weak t the bottom and J line at S7.rX ) . May ribs declined sympa thetically from SS.42X to SS.17K , reacting to 8 35. again dropping to 3S.17H and closing at S8.20. A rattling trade was done In ribs and lard. Ct'itti , 2:20 : p. tn. There was llttlo doing ou thu curb and a generally easier feeling prevailed on the whole llht. May wheat was quoted at 8lc and May corn at 40'fc. Lard sold at 57.50 for May , which was 2 c off. C11IOAGO LIVESTOCK. CHICAGO , March 12. New York Times : A singular story comes from an tip-town Hat Koing to provo tin ) futility of circumstantial evi dence. A well-known ci'ntlcman lias apartments m a desirable locality. He has means salllcicnt to gratify luxurious tastes and ju along life's rourt comfort ably. His domestic habit is to partially dress in tlie-nioriiing and open the windows dews of hisi sleeping rooms for ventila tion , while jiBldrs > s luocliu anil reads his paper inuanuthcr apartment. Mean while the attendant comes and "makes up" his dre { ini : room for the day. Ono in whom ho I UK I the greatest con- tidonco recantlv left his service to better her ciiiiditrdn. Her departure was so sudden that ( in the emergency the vacancy wtu Jilled without ordinary consideration as to the applicant's quali fications or rdMmmundations. Unfortu nately her ptrsonal appearance was not calculated tp impress her employer favorably , aikllc instinctively distrusted lier from theidly site camu. However , ho discovcrtdlnothiur ; to justify his suspicions U : 4. abe was untruthful or diblionust. The other niorninz he received a most violent shod , which for a brief period threatened ( rlcf lo the now chamber maid. Whlh the gentleman was indul - hi in Ids eatly siesta tlio thought Hashed across his mind that hu had left u diamond mend collar-Dutton lyine on his urcssin < r- caso. and tint the sinstur-lookiug maid would be torepted to appropriate it if iu a poculativehiood. Just then bo heard her enter Uie bedroom to do her morning's work. His first impulse was to rusli m and snatch temptation from tier view , but on a second thought ho made up his mind to put kor to thu test , he said to himself : "If her evil genius prompts the girl to tae the precious articlewhich I prize as an' ' heirloom , it will go hard with her. Nobody else can have stolen It but her , if it's missing , uud there will be no trouble recovering the property and proving her the thief by clrcumstanllal cvidcnoo. " The maid seemed unusually slow in making up the room , and the time dragged heavily on her employer's mind. All things have an ending , aud in duo course the girl tinislicd her work and went out , signaling her departure by slamming thu door. The gentleman waited H few minutes lest she should return - turn , and then , concluding tliat she would not , hu leaped to his feet and bolted for the bedroom. Was the diamond collar button gone ? No. But the eight that met the owner's gaze brought him to a sudden halt. As he reached the threshold n frightened monkey skipped nimbly off the dressing- case with thu collar-button , ar.d spranir to the wiudow-alll , evidently the way by which tlio grimacing little thief had en tered. Ho gave one glance at the human occupant of tlio room , and disappeared down the side of the building in the manner - nor and with the speed peculiar to his kind. Thagcutli'jutn purstit'd as far as ho could go , and called vainly to tlio monkey to come back with the priceless button. The sparkling diamond appar ently had a ( actuation for the four lugged thief , and , liKca slirowd robber , it caught his eye when he climbed into the room , and he grabbed it without looking for other treasures ou the prem ise. It turned out afterward that tlio monkey was a pet of ono of the neigh bors. It was caught after n long chase , but the diamond collar button has not been found yet. There is a suspicion that the thief swallowed it , or put it in pawn as sneaks are given lo doing when they want to got rid of their boodle. Not even the pawn ticket can be found , and tnS Donkey stands a good chance _ of being Kidnaped and CUtVSJs 91'en ' , The gentleman who mourns the loss of his heirloom has more faith in human nature now than ho had before this experience , nn-l often says he wishes tlio sinister- looking chambermaid had taken the diamond when she had the chance. The Uses of Klcctrlclty. Hoston Herald : "Electricity and Some of the Tilings Which can Be Done With II , " formed the topic from which Mr. William J. Hammer , manager aud elec trician of the Kdison Electric Light com- uany , delivered an interesting and novel lecture at the Christian Union hall , illus trated by many entertaining exhibitions last evening. The stage was literally covered with dynamo * . , batteries , re ceivers , distributors , and a wide range of mechanical appliancesas ( yell as a piano , drum , toy balloon , and Christmas tree , all indicative of tlio wide range which the lecturer promised to cover. As a prelude to the lecture a piano solo was played by Mr. 1. II. K. Dowucs upon an electrical piano , which , by means of an extra set of hammers connected by wires with a powerful battery , produced a long tone as each note was .struck , the whole effect resembling the playing of an otgan or : i stnug orchestra. The lec turer opened by illustrating the several methods of producing electricity by means of chemicals , friction , dynamos , magnetic radiation. Power for conduct- in" ; the experiments was derived from thu Edison central station at the rear of Park theater , and tlio novel combination of a light and power producidg device in con nection with the running of a sewing machine was received with interest and approval. In the running of a machine an Edison dynamo and a Sorague trener- orator were used. A light turning lattio was also successfully run by a bprague machine. At this point Mr. Hammer read a tele gram from President Johnson , of the Kdison company , refuting the reported lunacy and feeble condition of Mr. Edi son. Tlio lecturer did not claim for Mr. Edison the origin of incandescent light ing , Messrs. Storr & Kins having pat ented such a lamp in 1810. Mr. Hammer described at length the various kinds of incandescent light , with special refer ence to the assumed superiority of tlio Edison patents. The first arc light , re marked Me. Hammer , was devised in 1802 by Mr. Humphrey Davics in England , and has since been undergoing constant improvements. A class tube of German manufacture was utilized to demonstrate electric discharges , which suggests that the aurora boreali.s phenomena are but the demonstrations of electrical dis turbances. A set of variously colored incandescent lamps attached to a balloon was shown as being a valuable ucvico for signal systems in times of war. Gun bores can also be illumined and investi gated by the use of the incandescent light , as was demonstrated by a huge papier macho tube in the smaller end of which a tiny Him was placed. An amusing exhibition of the possibili ties of the Edison phonograpli was next given by the lecturer , who talked , laughed nnd spouted poetry into the machine , and afterward imitated vari ous birds and animals. The sounds were afterward reproduced by the machine with remarkable fidelity , to "the delight of the audience. A perfect roar of continuous laughter was evoked when , after singing into the machine the original foil being again used a perfect babel of sound was emitted. A Christmas tree connected with an electric motor was set to revolv ing , and so arranged as to be illuminated by variously colored lamps alternately. Goldfish attached to the end of an incan descent wire were set to swimmingabout in a globe , and were brilliantly illumi nated , though not as perfectly as was hoped by the lecturer , owing to the pre mature burning out of the lamp. The adaptability of incandescent lamps to the practice of dentistry and surgery was also shown. As proving the slight dan cer from fire pertaining to the in candescent light , u lighted lamp was wrapped by the lecturer in a handker chief , and btoken into atoms by a sharp blow , without damage lo the handker chief. This was possible , because the instant the glass was broken the rush of oxygen immediately nuouehed the light , and , in fact , shattered the filaments of carbon in small particles. A number of electrical toys and a sample of thn Edi son electric meter were next exhibited , and the entertainment concluded with a "dark seance , " during which a big white skull bobbed UD out of a box , a drum tat too was beat and all sorts of strange sounds were emitted by tlio several elec trical appliances. Great Incomes from Novel Wrttlnc. Writing on "Tho Profits of Novel Writing , " in the March Cosmopolitan , Mr. William Westall , the well-known English novelist , baj's : It may be said that these instances con flict with the opinion I have already expressed - pressed as to the ditliculty of getting books published. On the contrary , they confirm that opinion. Getting'books' is ono thing , getting them sold Is quite another. Little as Trollope made by his lirst literary ventures , ho probably made moro than his publishers. They were not a success because the public refused to buy them , and if Trollope bad not b&on a man of dogged resolution he would have given in long before the tide turned. It by no means follows , how ever that every ono who perseveres with equal resolution will bo equally successful , or , indeed , achieve any success at all ; for though by practice a man may acquire the knack of writing readable English , no amount of perseverance , without im agination will make a novelist. It is true that some writers appear to succeed at tlio first attempt. Like By ron , they waken and find themselves famous. Ihese instances are , however , very few , and when careful inquistion Is made it will generally be found that there was previous preparation and that suc cess was preceded by failure. Charlotte Bronte sprung at a ( > ound into the lirsl rank of living novelists ; but her great natural gifts has been assiduously culti vated for years.
