XGJXc off and sold from MSc , for May to 63c
tlie first hour. The decline was tollowed by
partial recovery , and until about half past
12 the price of May fluctuated between Wo
and KJXc , with most of the by no means
large business done above tflKc. Suddenly
and without a moment's warning the market
broke. Something snapped ami the hands
on the Indicator bejan to revolve with bt-
wllderlne rapidity. When the collapse came
May was r.u tiled ( at SOfc and the crowd was
lazllv trading In It and watching for the
"cliques" to beln to unload. It was gener
ally believed that all but one or two of the
heavy lines ot long wheat had been sold and
that the holders of others were only waiting
for a chance to tet out There was no teal
solid strength to the market ami an excuse
only was needed for a break to begin. Some
body rei-ehed a Paris cable announcing that
the chamber of deputies had passed the bill
putting an additional import duty of live
franca per kilometre on foreign wheat. The
news circulated quickly. Two leading local
operators appeared simultaneously on tlie de-
jioslt side oV the pits and each offered to sell
" 100,000 bushels or any part of It , " and the
market crowd held its bieath a moment and
then ensued a wild rush and scramble.
Down , down , down went the price. The
market broke to sic before the speculators
could realize what was colng on. K > ery-
hody was clamoring to sell , and there were
few who cared or dared to buy. All sorts of
ibsured and sensational reports concerning
the standing of iirms were put in clrcs'tatlon ,
and ever } body was trying to guess what the
slump meant and what caused It. So far as
can be learned , nobody was hurt. The truth
seems to be that the market was much more
"evened up" than the crowd thought could
be KOssitilo and that the ice wa- > thinner than
the best Informed Imaciiud. Of all the turns
which liad been relied on to come to the res
cue when the market slioued signs of weak

A. M. Wright V Co , and the others were
buiy doinc nothing so far as anj body could
see , thuush later on they apjieareu as buyers
to a moderate extent. The market bounced
from fclc to Mjc with the elasticity of a rub
ber ball , dropping back to Sic again with
almost equal suddennes. A quieter lecllng
took possession of the market ere Ion. : , and
during the last quarter of au hour of ttie long
tension May ranted from sl' c to Hc ,
resting at 1'Vc , Juoe leaving on"at
bUip. Trading was on a smaller
scale than might be supposed
during that excit'ng half hour. Fluctuations
were so violent that trailers couldn't keep up
with them with any decree of satisfatlon ,
and tlie execution of orders was attended
with difficulty. During the rece.-s the
panicky feelinr subsided to a very eon < ider-
able extent and | ieonle beean to Inquire if
they hadn't been needlessly stampeiled. The
backbone of the corn market pr/sented a
stillness to-day that was highly gratifying to
the bulls. Coi n showed by far better staying
qualities than wheat and closed at an im
provement up to 1 o'clock of 'tQ c on fu
tures beond May. The big break in wheat
had a temporarily demoralizing effect on
corn , of course , but from the inside tieured
touched by May property there was a rally of
he and that future closed at 1 o'clock In the
same notch that it did last nlaht n < c. Not
since the crop scare last summer nns there
been witnessed as active trading as there
was to-day. There were but few big round
Jot-s on sale but in the aircre.-ste a tremen
dously heavy business was tranwted , thejpit
being crowded troui center to circumference

tor * In wheat and provisions caine over and
took a hand and the excitement ran higher.
The greater portion of the time the shorts
bought right and left on the early bulge , in
addition to which there was large , miscellan
eous and general investment buying under
the popular belief that some corn was a good
thing to have. The opening was very un
settled , the official opening ngures being 41 * < c
for May. I3ut , In dltfereut parts of tlie
crowd , 41c and 41 ? c was paid at the same
time. Very quirkly the market began to
broaden and strengthen and a ground swell
set in that carried May to 42 > fc and June to
42 , ' < c. Heavy buvinc kept the boom thus
started eoing until wheat broke , when the
price of May dropped to 41lic. , Oats were
fairly active and nrmer , th > > speculative mar
ket sympathizing closely with corn
and showing no special features'
May opened and closed at ' A c. selling
meantime at a range of .i (3 ( )4 < e. PorK wag
at a standstill. Lard moved up strongly and
rllH also displayed strength but less aezres-
sive activity. May lard at one time sold ai
high as * S. 10 and May ribs at JS.75. The
former rested at $5.00 , the latter at SS.C5 , a
moderate gain on the day.

wheat opened at Ste , sold oil J4'c and then up

finally at SS' QSJVc. May corn closed at

the Br.E.1 CITTLR Trading was active and
Mlues a shade tinner. Taking distillery-fed
steers as a standard , prices are a Rood 15c per
100 higher than Monday on the ordinary run
r of fat cattle or such as are usually taken for
the dressed beef and shipping trade. A
couple of lots of big fancy steers sold at
Si20 and $5.40 , but snch sales cut no par
ticular figure in making comparisons on
values , as there is scarcely a load a week of
this class arriving iu this market , and a load
a week 1s about all that seems to be wanted.
A few loads of Texan s arrived to-day and
sold for fair prices. The demand for butchers'
stock was moderate and prices underwent
little or no chance as compared with the past
few days. Good to fancy cows and heifers
are making nearly as hlzh prices as hereto
fore , bat canning stock seems on the down
turn , and should the run of l'cxan continue
any way Plentiful good native cows and
heifers will co lower. Bulls are In falrdemand.
The stocker and feeder trade continues
active , with high prices prevailing for coed to

of the Baltimore & Ohio deal would be to in
crease the demand for American stocks
aoroad. Sales at noon were 160,000 chares.
The stock market broke badly during the
last hour. Western Union dropped to 73 ,
and the whole list sympathized. Coinstork
sold stocks right and left and In some circles
Gould was said to have been a moving power
In the break. Xew Encland alone main
tained Its ground. The general market
closed weak at bottom prices for the day.
The total sales were about 300,000 shares.

Cattle.
The receipts of cattle were the same to-day
as yesterday. The market opened fairly
active at an advance ot .VilOc over yester-
da > 's market on good stock. The common
grades were dull and about steady.
The rtcelpts were lighter than yesterdiy by
400 head , but there were several loads In the
yards which had been left over , so that the
number of hogs on the market to-day wa
ereater than yesterday. There was a good
demand for heavy hozs. and the market was
active at a decline of about 5c. Light hois
were not wanted , aud the bujers would not
even bid on them. There were forty loads of
light hogs left o\er.

A little closer acquaintance with the
facts will suftlce to show tha * the whole
thing is a blunder at least m so far as
identity mav be claimed as tlie star seen
by Tycho with that reported by Mathew
to have cone before the wise liicn of the
east in their search for the infant Savior.
The language of the gospel is that the
star went till it "stood over where the
young child was. " That means that the
star must have been very near the verti
cal when it passed the meridian above
the pole , iu which can it ? declination
was not more than 3is north , The ap
paritions referred to as h.iving occurred
in subsequent years were visible in not
far from 00 5 of north declination and
could never approach the point overload
at Bethlehem so nearly as the mklMim.

the star seen by Tycho and thee strang
ers which blazed out in earlier years.
The positions of none of them except the
la t were noted precisely enough to en
able the astronomer to draw a connect
ing line between them. But it i not be
yond the range of possibility that a
variable star should exist with such a
long period , though it i dilljcult to do
more than giie ; at the conditions that
would cause a star to blaze up at such
long intervals and die out to invisibility
during the lapse of such enormous cycles.
Several cases of variability with leis time
are known , the two most notable ex
amples being Algol , which gee ? through
all its changes in a few days and
Myra , with requires the largest
part of a year for the details of its per
formance. But these and all other
known variable- , keep in the same point
of the heavens , as referred to the earth ,
while passing from dimness to efi'ulgenco
and back again to the phase of faintness
of Jight. There Is no reaon to think that
an oL'ject variable or otherwise , can de
scribe a journey extending over a twelfth
psrt of the circumference of the sphere ,
and return at the vast lineal distance
that eparatcs us from the nearest star.
Such an idea involves what mav be called
z. mathematical absurditi , which mu t be
accepted by tho'e who e.xpect to see the
Star of Hethlehem shine nut in the con
stellation of Cas-iopra , which is where
Tycho saw his marvel.

A Town Held In Pawn.
Pall Mall Gazette : It may not be gen-
erallv known that the little seaport town
\Vismar , in the Baltic , virtually in
the same position as Montague Tfgg's
shirt namely nt the pawnbroker's. It
was in 1S03 that Sweedcp pawned the
town to the duchy of Mecklenburg for a
round sum of money. It was then stip
ulated that the town should be restored to
Sweden at the end of a century , provided
the sum lent , together with interest , were
paid back to Mecklenburg.
This sum is now said to amount to sev
eral hundred million marks , and appar
parently there U little chance \Vistnar
being able to pay it at the date fixed.
This singular treaty has lain dormant in
the archives of the municipality ever since
it was made up to the. other day , when
apropos of the concession of some land
to the customs authorities , it was ex
humed for legal purposes.
