out of bed nnd ran down to the Kitchen

wore plainly visible , but nothing else
could bo seen near them. Jim , the dog ,
came into the kitchen wlion the door was
opened , and lay down by the stovo.

dog was turned out doors again , and the
family wont back to bed. Quiet had
barely been restored in the house , when ,
the sharp clang of the boll rang out once
moro. There was a general stamiedo | nl
tlio family down stairs again. This time
alarm and uneasiness was depicted on
every faeo. Farmer Davidson dressed
himself , wont out and made a thorough
search of the premises , nnd returned as
much mystilicd and moro disturbed than
before. The dog Jim came back in the
house witli him.
It was agreed that no human could bo
responsible for the ringing of tlio boll , for
if such were the case the tlojr would have
barked. Jim was driven from tlio house
again , and the family wont back tip-stairs ,
but not to bod. The sal by windows and
looked out upon the bell post witli un
questionable awo. As Ihoy looked they
saw the dog Jim trot deliberately from
the house to the Poll post. Ho raised up
n his hind feet , sei/.ed the bell rope in
is teeth , and gavu it three or four vigor-
