THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : MONDAY , FEBRUARY 21. 1887. 3 A NOTABLE MUSICAL EVENT. Pnttl , Mcnlclil , Gnlm l , Gtilllo nnd Novnra tn nn Upcrntlo Concert. Denver Republican , Feb. 10 : As Rirllsh as sbc was fwcnt.v years ago , as RrncefUl us R fawn , as charming as a siren , and with a voice like an angel's , the fairPatti niatlo ber sccontl nppunranco in Denver last evening. And what a reception she liatll An audience which filled every ccat in Music hall greeted her with spontaneous fcpplnn c ; and it was disposed to keep the fuir cantatrice responding to encores all nipht. And she was very crncious. Thongli the hall was inMifl'erably hot and hard to sing in on account of its dclielcnt acoustic qualities , to say noth ing of the annoyance of tlm hissing of the electric lights , Mine. 1'atti beamed with smiles nntl good nature , and re sponded to encores after cacli number in tlm lirst part of the programme , It w.ns a notable performance. It will bo remembered by everyone who was so fortunate as to bo nrcseitt. Thp audience represented $7,000 in the cash-drawer in the box-ollico a great deal of money to pay to : i troupe of bingcrs , boine one may say. Don't say it ; it would be a chestnut. ( icnitis generally gets what it wants and eve.il the growlers would still growl if tlm world hail no great singer who compelled them to pay amazing sums to hear lie t > ing. 1'ntti is peerless incomparable. The delight wl'ich the melody of her voice imparts is cheap at any price. Hut if one must compare I'utti with some other Bingcr , let us take Abbott the phteky little woman who can sing seven nights in the week ami who only lacks a voice to bo a great artiste. If it is worth $1.50 to bear Abbott at tempt to fling till ! role of ijemii-.imiile.il is worth f > 15,000 ( ) to hear I'utti sing it as Hossini dreamed it when be wrote it. If you will have comparisons lake this ono. Tlio memory of : i voice like 1'atti'H is something to carry with one to the end of life , for it is ennobling. The performancevas more than a tonic : it was a musical intoxication. It lifted onn out of the humdrum into the air. Patti's " " "Home , Sweet Homo" brought happy tears to many eyes. It fiuli'usod ono old gentleman to such an extent as to bring his handkerchief into requisition , H ardly hocondary , as contralto , to 1'atti , is Scalchi , and is nn- equaled. The concert wis more satisfactory than a performance of opera would lnuo been. for it would be something unusual to liiitt three urtists , who are admittedly the greatest the world knows , iu one presen tation. The average manager would jintl Patli quite stitliclmit as an attraction. nnd the other roles would bo butchoicd after the most approved Italian fash ion. ion.The lirst number on the programme was an overture ( "Zampa" ) by tlio or chestra. Then Signor Aliglinra snnp very acceptably , n bulTb song from "II llarbiore. " Unt the audience was not roused to tlio excellence of the p'erform- ance to which it was to listen until Mine. Scalchi sang Kobil Signor from "Lcs Huguenots. " Denver had never before heard a truly great contralto. ' 1 hat the audience was competent ; to thoroughly appreciate the richness of Scaleln's voice , its marvelous strength und its peculiarly cllective sym pathetic qunlity was evidenced by the ap plause which it gave her. She smilingly responded to tlio encore and sang that delightful aria from Mignon , which is Bting by Frederick in JFilhm's boudoir. Signor GuHlo , though not what one could call prepossessing In personal ap pearance , thoroughly charmed the audi ence when ho began to sing , though un fortunately in the tiinil note of "iM'Ap- pari"from "Martha , " bo narrowly es caped n painful break , which to some ex tent marred the efl'cct of his previous work. It is but just to say that ho was not In pooct voice and has not been for pome time. The slight roncbncbs in the Closing note to which wo have referred \vasductohisatteuipttoforco his voice to the limit of its capacity. Ho after wards sang Gounod's "Avo Maria" very tenderly , and deserved very much more applause than he received. The lirst number that Mine. Patti sang was n rondo from "Lucia di Lamnier- tnoor. " it is in Donizetti's music that I'nttl Is particularly brilliant , as also in Rossini's and Verdi's , her work in the lattor's "Traviata" being quite the most marvelous the world has known. "On an encore she sang "Coming Thro' the live. " Afterward she sang "The Lust Hose of Summer. " and in re- eponso to the insatiate demand of tlio audience tor more , she sang with a ten derness and sweetness that brought the moisture to many eyes , "Home , Sweet Homo. " Ono of the most noted efforts of the ovonimi was Signor ( ialiissi's "Di I'ro- Veny.a , " which gave hl.s noble voice full Ccopo to show its passion and putlios. ( iermont is one of ( ialiissi's great roles , and ho sings nothing better than "Di Provoiiza. " This remarkable concert was concluded by the presentation of an nirangement of the lirst and bocond acts of "Semir- umido , " in costume , with Mine. Tattl as Bcmiramido , Scalchi us Arsnco and ( ialassi sis Assur. The brilliant duo be * tween Patti and Scalchi , the cavatma by , * Bcalclii and the duo between Scalchi and ( ialassi wore rendered with a power that electrified the audience , and ono pannot blame the many entranced listeners who remained m their scats uftor thu programme had boon concluded , In the feeble hope that it might be pro longed. DANGEROUS PLACES IN PARIS. CVIiero Thieves nnil Murderers Ite- soi-t A Hand of A snnsliiH. , On leaving tlio Clint Noir the other taight some one proposed that we should ji-imt the collars near the Central markets , vritos a Paris correspondent of tlio New . jTork Sun. In the Fabuourg du Temple. tit l.u Chanollo , ami in the neighborhood of the I'litco Munburt these collars or vaults below grog shops are famous as Iho resort of thieves ami bad characters. They are among the sights of criminal Paris which the stranger rarely visits , however much his curio.iity may have been awakened by the descriptions given by Kugeno Sue in his "Mysteries of Paris , " So Vto mailo up a party of three , nnd between 1 and 'J in the morning wo arrived at the Central markets. \ \ o loft thorn to their dreams and descended bv a narrow stalrcttbo into a bcries ot vaults , the white washed ceilings ofwhicli .vero covered with arabesques and names writ ten in bluck with the smoke of n caudle. In ono part of ihobo vaults a group of men were drinking and ringing parodies of church hymns. This did not come up to our expecta tions , so wo went to "La Joiino Franco , " n famous cellar , where a man had been assassinated only a few nights before , We passed through a gate , down one flight of narrow stnirs , then stooping low we passed under a narrow archway re served in the foundations of the house , then down another lllght of stairs , then through another archway , along a tor tuous passage , and to ( o a tunnel about Goven feet high , live feet broad , and twenty feet long. Tlio vault of the roof was coycred with green trollisworkjthero \vero benches and rush stooU to sit upon ; wooden tables bearing the marks of itrife : and , to light us , two gas-jets. Wo were hero at the very end ot the niouso- Irap , and wo now undurstand wliy- the police never enter those "cnvoaux ' Ihoro is no possibility of a fair light. When wo entered iho "caveau" there was nobody there , but after wo hail ordered uorno wine two musicians came lu. The ono was a miserably pale | ol ; low , half starved and half blind , with n thin blontto mustache , lie sang and ac companied himself by sinking a few chords on n guitar. The other was n short , bony man , with a black beard , drunken blue eyes , round shoulders , and an appearance of humility , as if ho wcro constantly afraid of receiving kicks. He ang in turn , strumming on a single bass chord. The tip given by some watcher soon brought four other visitors a burly ruffian.who were a huge red fez rising eighteen inches above his crown , a yotitijr man wearing a thin cotton blouse , and two others dressed in cast-oil' clothes of fashionable cut , but without a vestige of linen , The humble musician sang. above all things , an air from "Mignon,1 keeping his eyes lixed on tlio ground as lie sang , and pointing to his heart with an awkward gesture whenever the word "heart" occurred in the romance. Sud denly , one after another , half n dozen athletic , square-shouldered men , varying in ago from seventeen to twenty-live , crept through the narrow archway , passed rapidly In without even glancing nt our table , nnd massed themselves nt the end of the vault , lolling on tlm benches , smoking cigarettes , and drink ing at our expense , for wo thought it only polite to oiler thcso gentlemen a glass of wine , tlm more so as the musi cians were playing for our amusement. After "Mignon"tho ruulaii with the red fcsi asked for the guitar , took a tuning- fork out of his pocket , snapped it with his teeth , and tuned the instrument prop erly. Ihon the rtillian in the cotton blouse rose and with line voicc.pcrfect sentiment , and correct gesture , sang other airs from "Mignon. " ami aKo from "Car men. " All the rullians listened in per fect silence to the singer , who was a real artist , ami two women who had joined the baud melted into tcais at the end , ono of them exclaiming"Ah , musicl When I Hear 'Mignon' I can't help it. 1 cry like a calf. " The scene appeared to be idyllic rather than bnjramlish and terrible. However , it appeared that after till we might have been in better com pany , for nt a sign from the waller I slipped out of the vault. "You had bet tor give the word to you friends to come up stairs. The baud is almost au r.omplet. and it is very tiie band that assassinated a man hero last week. If their chief happens to come in you might get in trouble. " We did not wait to be warned twice , but wished the gentlemen good evening , and ascended the staircase without undue precipitation , and yet with a kind of internal sensation of rapidity. After leaving "La Jonno Franco" wo visited three or four less interesting es tablishments. It was the .same spectacle in each of them. Nothing at all like the descriptions given by Eugene Sue , and the narratives of other explorers of Paris. Salvator Rosa's brigands are as unreal and conventional as his stormy landscapes.
