less disgraceful are the attempts which are
boinp ; made in certain quarters to create
nn unjust prejudice against these people ,
by circulating false and ridiculous stones

morninc contained au article wlneh por-
travodthe Salvation army bcatinp drums
and tambourines in front of ti house on
Jackson street , two or three doors east of
the "barracks , " where two children were
lying sick unto deatli with
diphtheria. Tins artirlo outlines the
entreaties of the heart-broken mother ,
who begged the army to leave her imme
diate premises with their noise and clat
ter , in order that her children might die
in peace. She was roughly answered , it
is alleged , by tlio Salyation army people ,
who made more noise than over.
A rcpoiter for the IEK ? , who took the
trouble to visit all the houses in this
vicinity yesierduy found that no children
were lying sick with diphtheria in that
neighborhood , that no .such pathetic
scene had taken place , and that
furthermore the people in that
vicinity are not circulating n petition to
the city council for the removal of the
army.
One lady who lives next door to the
"barracks , " said :
"We are not at all disturbed by tuo Sal
vation army people themselves , but by
the toughs antl thugs who try to break up
their meetings. It's an outrage that the
police should allow such things. I , for
one , think these people ought to be al
lowed to worship in their own way. "
The Salvation army people hau a com
paratively quiet meeting last night. The
boisterous element , which broKe up
Wednesday night's meeting , was conspicuous -
spicuous by its absence ,
