THE OMAHA DAffiY BEE : TTESDAY , ' EEBBTJABY .8. 1887. I THE LOBBY BACK IN MCE. Lincoln People Rejoiced Over the Prospects For a Long Session , AN EX-CONVICT'S SLICK GAME. Ho Hire * Out to a Fnrinor. Gains His Confidenceami Sklpq AVIlIt the Cnsh bcntlct T'crcr Kpldomlc. fntoM run tir.r.'s MSCOT.X The city awakened again yesterday with the reconvening of the legislature , and there is a prevailing belief in the capital city that the present week will sco some Important work on the railroad questions that will bo up in both houses. Karly lo arrive yesterday were the gang of lobbyists who had stolen away In the wake of members Friday last and who returned on early trains lo bo ready lo greet the members on their return. The railway officials have returned , the latest reinforcements being the head men of the Missouri Pacllio system. Lincoln cit izens greet the contest over the railroad qiiesllon as another senalorial provi dence , and the signs of rooms to rent and ilay board uro again hung upon the outer wall. That there will bo n great , attend ance of lobbyists seems to bo generally understood , ami there will bo plenty of room for them. If llio light will keep lo just such an uncertain point that ml- "jotirnmonts will occur often and the ses sion bo prolonged Lincoln will bo grcally delighted and count the session the ono of greatest prollt. As It is llio impression has become very general that the session will bo one of unusual length. A.V EX-COXVICT ItUltGI.AIt. A farmer out a few miles from Lincoln has just passed through nn cxporionco with a very nitci larm hand that came lo him last summer , worked faithfully , nursed two young mon thai wuro sick through the winter , and laluly skipped all of a sudden , but taking with him f 105 that he had carotully oxtraelod from be- ncalh llio pillow of one of tlio sick men. The tanner has been on an invcstigalion fiinco the robbery occurred , a few days ngo , nnd ho finds that the man was an ox- convict from the state penitentiary , who something like a year ago completed his sentence and opened out in business again. The young chap was sent up to the pen six years ago from the district court of Douglas county , being convicted of n burglary that he committed in the city of Omaha , and while he was the most unsuspecting kind of a man , ho evi- detilly could not resist the chance to Bteal when it fell Ins way The olliclals have been furnished tlio particulars of the case and a reward is out for his cap- lure which , with the slart tliu chap has , is improbable. THE scAitr.r.T FEVEH IIAOINO. " 1 Ihink , " said Counly Judge Parker yesterday , "that there is a vastamountof nntrliiience in this city nt the present tiwao while the scarlet fever is raging and Hint If the city has a boartl of heallh nt all it is time ft did something or quit. " The expression made by thu judge is ono licaril in numberless cases and the mill- tarings are growing loud and deep at the fairly criminal negligence that has been in vogue. There uro undoubtedly at the present time in the city -100 cases of scar let fever gathered and scattcrud through the public schools , and every ( lay some new family awake to find that they have it in their midst. A gentleman whose business takes him over the cily stated that ho had uot as yet seen but one warn ing of the whereabouts of llio disease dis played , and when It is remembered that cases of this disease were left for days in the basement of the public school build ing whore nine hundred children were in daily attendance , the spread of llio con tagion should cansu no wonder. It is tune that the health olfieurs did some thing and that existing negligence be summarily dealt with. HEAL ESTATE DOOMS. Mr. Frank Sheldon has added of late to his heavy purchases several very im portant lota and tricts that show the booui still pushing to the front. A few morn mnn with llio real eslale energy nntl capital of Mr. Sheldon would soon put real eslate on the jump in Lincoln. One of Mr. Sheldon's recent purchases was llio Hooves live-acre tract , situated within thu mile aud a half limit north east from tbo heart of thoeity. The con- Bldonition for this Iract was $8,100. Mr. Sheldon also has purchased a ten-acre tract just east of Dnrfeo park in the south east part of HID city fora consideration of irU.UOO , and another purchase by thu same party is a tract of two anil a half acres on Tenth and M streets that wuro secured of Mr. Hurr for a consideration of an even $10,000. TliBse two lots and a fraction ixro lit present covered with a lumber yard , but as they are very desirable for business purposes it will evidently bo a matter of work before the coming season passes to record the erection of a hnnd- homu brick block upon thai site. AllOt'T ' TUB C1TV. Post A of the Travelers' Protective - Boclallon have Issued llio first number of thuir paper , the T. P. A. Among > the prisoners is Mrs , Shullenberger , brought on chaugu o ! venue from Ne braska City , anil she is reported as quiet mid philosophical at her room in jail. J. D. McVarland has liled with the county clerk n plat of his addition to Lincoln - coln , , which is named "Falrla'wn. " The midition is situated just south of tlio ttato fairgrounds , with the Northwestern road tiloug the north boundary. The addition has been placed on thu market. Three appeal cases have been liled In ( he past two days with the clerk of thu district court that will come before the district court for adjudication. These cases aret Hohanuon vs. Turner. Hrog.in vs. Splam , and the case against tlio el fic Telegraph company , wherein ite t I'ndorwood received a small verdict in the lower court. ( Iforgo W. Loidigh. a prominent demo- | orutio politician and capitalist of Ne braska City , was in Lincoln yesterday nnd stopped at the HER office lonz , enough to pay his cpmnlimcnts to the Omaha Herald in. vigorous language for its course in calling democrats who pre ferred Van Wyck to other republicans pimps nml such endearing names. Mr. Leidigh roads the DEE and not the Ilcrald henceforth and forever. The clerk of the district court and Deputy Harrington are busily at work preparing llio copy for llio coming court docket for the county in the dlslrict court. It will bo a voluminous docu ment. Ho was taken lo jail by the police charged with felonious assault and yos- lorday aflernoon ho was given a hearing before his honor , the police magistrate. Olliclals from Omaha brought In nn insane woman to the hospital yesterday , coming down on the morning train. The woma.i was very violent during the en- lire trip , and a straight jacket was neces sary to keep her within control of the of- licurs. Monday was the usual light day at the stock yards and packing houses , the re ceipts being small nml prices unchanged from those of Saturday. S. 11..11. Already capitalists are beginning lo come in and wor'd has been received that many more will follow as soon as spring opens. The prospects for building improvements are butler Ihan any previous season , and Atkinson is in a position to make ono of Ihe best cities on the line of the Fremont , Klkhorn ife Missouri Valley railroad. . . . The county division question is upper most in the minds of our clt i/.eiis and work is being done of an clicetivo nature that is bound to make three now counlics out of Holt. No labor nor money will bo spared to set tie this im portant question. It has been decided that S'JO.UOO will bo raised if necessary in order to compel llio division. . . .Miller & Simmons is the name of a now firm iusl opening a large lumbur yard here. CAICXS , Fob. 5 , [ Correspondence of the DEE ] Four years ago next April lliu writur loft Douglas county to t-eok a homo in this , then , wild and eompanitivol > un known part of Nebraska. At th.it MHO the population of what is now Koya P.ilni county consisted of n few scattering ranehu.s.sHiiatudonthoNiohraraand Kejn Paha rivers. Onu year brought wonders , changing the wild and dciolatu prairie into thousands of happy homes. Keyu Paha county is forty-eight miles long from cast to west , is bounded on Iho cast by Holt , on thu south by Drown , on the west by Cherry and on the noulli by Dakota ; and was formed from : i pirt : of lirown county in Ihe fall of 1881. J'lio snrfuco 1 ? sontly rolling , excepting along the Nlobrara river , which is bordered by pre cipitous blull's and deep ravines , which are well timbered. Hack trom three to six miles to the north of the river the gently rolling country begins and readies to the north line of the county It con sists of low hills and broad valleys. Thu latlor are well Wiiturud by sprin < ; crooks ( lowing. north into tl.o Keya I'aha river , and produce Iho heavy blue-stum grass. The soil is u rich sandy loam , producing everything in abundance that can bo raised in any other part of Iho stale , and only needs time to fully develop its won derful resources. The county is settled by a whin-awake , energetic class pf people , who take a general interest in the common welfare. Schools aru in a nourishing condition , considering the youth of Iho county. The greatest full want is a railroad , the nearest point in our county to a railroad now being Cams , which is ton miles north of the Sioux City & Pacilic railroad. Wo look anxiously forward to Iho lime which is not far distant when Omaha will awake and see us we can see , that now is the timu if she desires to hold her share of the trade of the great northwest , for her lo bo doing something in railroad con- slruclion. Omaha Is undoubtedly losing ground by waiting , the growimc resources of this fast country are bound to attract the attention of computing towns and they will lose no time in securing its trmlc. The people of Koya Paha county are Indignant at the defeat of Van Wyok. They see Iho only way to have their wishes carried out by their representa tives. Is to down tho.ao who are unfaith ful to ihuir constituency. C. H. D. lowit's Anti-Monopoly. llKiVEitsiTY PLACE , la. , Feb. 7. To the Kdilor of Iho Hr.E : There is a profound feeling in Ibis part of Iowa over Iho defeat - feat of Senator Van Wyck by thu corpo rate Interests. Some of the shysters who aided in that work were formerly resi dents of Hits state. Nicol of Antelope , if we inKtaku not , used to bo a member of the Iowa hotisn of representatives , whore ho signali/.od himself by doing the dirty work of corporation1) . Wu see he Is up to his old tricks. Next year llio contest will open in Iowa , and wo hope with bettor results to the causa of anil- monopoly , The present status is about as follows : The State Register and the certain brass-collared brigade are opposed to the re-election of Senator Wilson , because at times liu takes grounds against the cor- porallons. These occasions are not half as frequent as thu people wished them to be , but they occurred too often to suit the corporation striKers. Another class of radical anil-monopo lists like Tynor , of Taylor , are opposed to Wilson because they allege lie is lee weak lo be trusted. Hut whatever may bo Ihn result Ihuro is certainly no show for Hepburn or any man of thai ilk. Jloom . Its construction was agreed upon in 1782. the object being to carry oil' the water from the Schemnit ? . mines to the lowest wart of the Uvan valley. The work is now complete.mid it forms the longest tunnel in the world , being 10. ° 7 miles long , or about ono mile lonirer than St. Ootl-ard and 2J miles longer than Muni. Cyrils. This tunnel , which has taken so lontr in making , bus cost very nearly a million sterlinir , but tlio money appears to have Loen v/nll spent ; at least the present gen eration has no icason to grumble , for the saIng from being able to do nwny with water-raising appliances amounts to AllfUOOuyear. There is ono further point , however , worth notice , for if wo have the ndvan- tuiro of our great-grandfathers in the matter of mechanical appliances they certainlv were better oil' in lint price of labor. The original contract for the tun- net , inuilo in 17S-i , was that II should bo completed in tlnrtv yeur ami should eoit , S.7 per yard run. For eleven years the work was done at this price , but the French revolution unl'uneed the cost of labor ami materials to such an extent that lor thirty years little progress was made. For ten years following much progress was made , and then the work dropped for twenty yours more until the. water threutono.il to drown the mines out srito- got her. Finally the tunnel was com pleted m 18JH , the remaining part cost ing C'W n yard , or more than three times as much as the original contract rate. The tlotivckcnpcr'M Coiimlalnt. "I am discouraged. There is a brief reference in a recent nfnnhur of Science to a remarkable case in which the breath of un individual , or rattier the eructations from his stomach , took liio when brought in contact with lighted mutch. This cuso which was reported to the Medical Journal , has called forth communications from physi cians by which it would appear that the phenomenon is not such a rare one us was at llrwt supposed. In one case of Dud digestion llio patient emitted inllnni- muble iias from the month , which , upon analysis wiw found to be largely com posed of marsh gus. In another case the eus was snlnhiirottcd liydroiren. A case is reported in the British Medical Jour nal , in which , while blowing out a mutch the patient's b.uuth caught lire with a noise like u pistolwhich was loud enough to awaken his wile. One evening , while a confirmed dyspeptic was lighting his pipe , ' an eructation of tru.s from his stomach occurred , and the lighted gas burned Ins mustache and lips. In JOwuld's book on indigestion , the analy sis of the gas in one of these cases was , carbonic ucid , 'M. < T > 7 ; hydrogen , i.0.57car- ; btirette.l hydrogen , 10.70 ; oxygen. 0.73 ; nitrogen , < 11 ! ! d ; Milplmrcltod hydrogen , a trace. The origin ol flie.se gases is un doubtedly the undigested food , which in these CUSL-S undergoes decomposition.
