nnd a further decline In rentes. The financial
nnd political news from the other side was
exciting and somowbat Incoherent , but the
main fact that foreigners are themselves
alarmed nt the war preparations In progress
obtruded Itself Into view In many ways.
.Heretofore the trouble lias been thnt thu ex
citement had been confined largely to the
wheat pit , not belnp reflected In the tluctuv
tlons of Krencli , ( icrman or KnalN ) securi
ties , and not a great while nfter the opening
Jlny whr.it wits stilling nt 85c. 1'rom 85o thu
market recoiled , and the price nt 1 o'clock
was within n sixteenth of the louest of the
morning session , viz. : 8P. , ' < 3SV ! < c. The
feature of the market during thu lirst hour or
two \vns the rather free covcilnu of sboits ,
Kialcy Carter doing perhaps the heaviest
burin ? . The shorts did fonr-llfths of the
buying that was done. Tlio friends of wheat
expressed faith that tliero would bo a con
tinuation of the advance. The 1 o'clock
rnnito was J @ 6 < o under the top ,
nnd only J O' ' c above yesterday's
closings. N'o export business of consequence
quence was done , but tlio Increased strength
abroad was a | iilek reflection of yestenlay's
sit.lit Improvement here , Additional news
was receded hero certifying to the dnmago
to California crops and reduced acreage nnd
furtherconliimMlon of the damaging reports
from Ohio , Indiana nnd Kansas were re
ceived. IJut these Items didn't liavo the
slightest InfluenceIn regulating values.
Neither did the fact that western points re
ceipts up to this writing show n falling oft
of 1100,000 bushels as compared with last
\voek. Decreased seaboard shipments nnd
the curtailed production of flour at Minneap
olis had a neutralizing effect. There was
notion In corn to-d.iy and the speculative
business transacted was the latgest wit
nessed at n single session since the opening
of the new j ear. Tlio principal feature of
the deal was the selling on a Inrgo scale by
tlio big longs nnd correspondingly free buy
ing by the shorts. Jones , McCormlck , Kun-
nett it Co. led olT by selling In the neighbor
hood of 1,000,000 bushels , half of
ttio amount going In two jags ,
\vhllo Hiitchinson , Lester A Co. , Schwartz
& Dupco and Ucildcs unloaded larue lines.
The Htiength In wheat and provisions nnd
tlio bullish feeling developed In those lines
made shotts In corn nervous and In the gen
eral rush to cover the price of May property
was run up fiom 41lfc nt the opening to
4lHJfoon tliospll * . But when the ex
citement In wheat .subsided nn easier tone
prevailed , prices took n back tiack and the
early advance was lost , Kersliaw. Ilrega A ;
Dwight and Uillettu nppe.ired as good buyers
nnd the regular scalpers dodged In nnd out
of the croud , taking adv.uit.igo of every turn
in the market. It was an excellent tiading
day for scalpers. Tbo close of the moinlng
session was qulto nctlvo and at 1 o'clock
quotations were 'fc above yeateiday's latest
bids. Seller March closed at 30' < jc , April nt
iWlXcnnd May at 41)4e. ) Thomaiket is now
believed to bo pretty well evened up. .Re
ceipts continue higher. Foreign advices noted
n steady market lor snot corn nnd in Now
York tutuics were lUht. Oats were fairly
nctlvo nnd stronger , though prices for lututes
ns usual lliictunted within n narrow range ,
closing at 1 o'clock nt 'ir > J < e for Match , 20Jc ,

wore nctlvo but less excited than yesterday
nnd prices averaged considerably lilcher ,
thoiinh the closing rnngo shows that thu ex
treme top quotations established were not
nmintttlned. May pork opened and closed
