One poor fellow accosted a citi/en near the corner of Broadway and Bryant streets about two weeks ago , at a late hour at night , nnd asked where hi ; could get a lunch giveir him. The eit'r/.cn told him to follow him , and thus escorted him to jail. The next morning the follow was ccntcneed to ten days as n vagarant. His ifnio was out Sunday , and afler rustling ubout for himself , ho appeared again at the jail yesterday and begged to be given ten days more. He found it easier to JHVO the city board him than to board jimself. Last evening three as hard eiti.cn.H as ivcr were shipped from here in irons went out over the road , in custody of Jailer O'Neill and William Spetman , bound for the penitentiary. The three prisoners were "Comanche Hill , " the all around crook and crowbar burglar , who after a successful career of twenty-four years is at last pinched for clumsily try ing to ben confidence man ; Kmcrson , the colored burglar , whoso past record is not so well known , but who evinces a peculiarly vicious disposition : Harry Walbridge , the ombo/wler , who has nar- newly escaped bcinu ; sentenced to u like fate before. If the least chance is given any ono of the three they would improve it and make their escape at any risk of life or limb. Dr. llnnchotloflicu No. 12 Pearl street : resilience , 120 Fourth street ; telephone No. 10. _ IMrilgod Not To Treat. On Sunday night last Rev. T. J. Maekcy gave an address to the young men of the ity , and started the circulation of his anti-trcating pledges. A number of the young men accepted the sound advice given them , and have pledged themselves as suggested , and new applications for pledges are being daily received. The pledge is simple , and reads as follows : " 1 promise , by the help of God and on the honor of a gentleman , that 1 will not treat or bo treated in any place where mall or alcoholic liquors are for sale , for the space of one vcar , or as long as I hold this card. " As is generally known , the American system of treating and retreating is ono peculiarly pernicious , and as an out growth of the fast living in this land causes more drunkenness than any other one feature of tlic saloon business. In many places in this country there are similar anti-treating associations , and the idea is by no moans original nor the mat ter an experiment , except as locally ap plied. Many persons who enter a saloon with the honest intention of getting a glass of beer call up some friends , and then each of these feels in duty bound to reciprocate without delay , and the others feel equally bound to accept , and thus each gets several drinks with the chances good of being fur gone on a full drunk. There are many pernicious features to the treating system , and the move is one ' which will be joined in by many who could not be induced to promise total abstinence. This chaniro from warrants is appreciated by them greatly. The salaries are small enough at the best , considering the nature of the work expected of them , and certainly men should not be appointed who arc not willing to meet the expectations , and per form the duties , no mattei how arduous or risky. The firemen were given their choice between taking ? 5.5 in cash , or $ C3 in war rants. Some took cash , some warrants. The firemen naturally feel that they should be allowed I GO cash , the same ns policemen. They claim that while the police are on duly only a portion of the time , the firemen must bo on hand day and night , ready to spring to the front. They also insist that if the city wants to cut down expenses they should commence at some other point than the lire depart ment. City wan-ants were yesterday bring bought at SO cents on 1 1m dollar , showing that there is a rapid rising in value , with a treed prospect of soon reaching par , Stoves ! Wood , No. 501 Main street , Milwaukee Dcur , The number of signs appearing on the business streets calling attention to the fact that Milwaukee beer is to bo had in prohibitory Iowa lias already become a matter of comment. In this connection the following from a Wisconsin paper is interesting : "it is estimated that the .Milwaukee brokers will manufacture 1,207,713 bar rels of beer this year , an increase of 88- 713 bat rels over last year. One of the leading brewers says that the prohibition movement has not hurt the business of Milwaukee brewers. 'On the contrnry,1 he said , 'it lias been a good thing for us so far. We are flipping a great doul more beer into Iowa and Kansas than over. The brewing business in those state. ' is practically ruined : throughout tlio countrv tlio business \ increasing in volume. ' U is estimated that from the Best brewing works alone 23,000 people secure a living. Within the past year nearly * 1,000 ,000 has been expended for now buildings and machinery by the Mil waukee brewers , " Jon Murphy T. There will doubtless bo a crowd at the opera house this evening to welcome Joe Murphy , the great. Irish comedian. His name is a familiar one , hud ho has won popularity by murjt. Ho has not boon content with merely exciting the mirth of audiences by caricatures of the Irish. although his wealth of wit nnd humor would have enabled him to have excelled in his line , had ho chosen to thus com pete with mere fun-makers. Ho has sought to do n truer and better work. Ho pictures faithfully the humorous vein which is inherent in the Irish nature , nnd with it combines : i representation of the pathetic nnd the generou ? , the Iruo hearlcdne.os , and other manly qualities which makes his negotiations so charm ing. His voice is richly musical , and adds much to the enjoyment of his parts. "Shnun Rime , " which is to bn given to night , is one of tlioo Irish dramas in which Murphy appears at his best , a drama which gives assurance of never being worn out.
