bright and piercing o.rcs as black as jet.
His month is pleasant and half veiled by
a dark horso-Mioo moustache , while an
imperial of the same color , perhaps a
shade darker , falls on the full chin and
fuller lower jaw. Ho is about lifty years
of ago , works very hard , and is so fond
of cards and play that he turns night into
day. His rooms , or apartments , arc situated -
atod in the heart of Paris at No. 10 , Place
do la Madeleine , fronting on the place
and boulevard. His suite of apartments
looks out on one of the lineal views in the
nity. have often seen people stare up
at that seductive-looking balcony ,
glance with eager curiosity at tlui veiled
windows and line lace curtains , and after
the answered query ; "I wonder who lives

of the most fetching apartments to look
at in all Paris , unit 1 am not surprised to
find that it is occupied by a man like
Moilhao.1
Tlio interior is richly but simply fur
nished : one great room is devoted to bil
liards and a mammoth billiard tal > ! c ; an
other , the coruer cupboard , or boudoir ,
wliuro the author writes , is used as a
library. It is simply one of the cosmst
places in the worlit , and oins must bo
bard pushed who couldn't tind something
to write about in such a don. Mcilhao
takes forever to write a piece , lie con *
strnets , reconstructs , builds and tears
down with a patience and enthusiasm
truly remarkable. His hand-writing in
liis plays is \ cry line and very dillieult to
read : the sheets look like mysterious
state documents , and in sonio way bear
ono and all the impress of unusual vnlno ;
these manuscripts of course are copied
and the originals remain in the author's
hands. In fact , it is the very place for
them to remain , as I much doubt anyone
ono being able , or at least having the pa
tience to enumerate them , road them , or
oven to make them out. Mt'.llhac is so
careful a composer that lip polishes and
repolishes to a degree positively nituldcn-
ing. Ilo is never content with his work.
lie will leave a piece with a manager ,
perfect , so to speak ; the poor director will
llattcr himself that at last ho has got hold
of his author , when a ring at his
door-belt between the hours of : i and. 5 a.
in. , will announce a Iwly message trom
M. Meilhac. Mmlhac has thought of
something else to put in his play : a vil
lain to wear a deeper smile , a woman to
drop a more silent tear , a maid to drive a
harder bargain , or a valet to drown an
extra sorrow in the flowing bowl. Per-
naps , such is Meilhac's literary con
science , he has aroused his manager to
tell him that the adjective on page four ,
line twelve , word three , is to bo-sup
pressed. That will bo all , not much , but
one must be , nay , cannot be , too partic
ular , and the manager with iv groan
promises everything , smiles on Iho mes
senger , returns to his now sleepless bed.
and spends the hours until daylight pray
ing for the irrevocable lirst night. Thou ,
cvt'.u Meilhac's moral scissors are obliged
to lie dormant for iivc hours at least : the
the theater is Olympus , the artists arc
goddesses , the manager is a deity , and
the public arc angel : ) . A jolly supper
herds malingers , authors , actors and
critics together ; but in the midst of ( low
ing compliment and ( lowing champagne ,
Mcilhnn even then does not forget to say :
"Had 1 worked a little longer on such or
such n thing , 1 think 1 could have im
proved it.'p
This conseicnliouMi < ! ? s is the reason
why managers always "cnring" their
premieres on him , when he least expects
it. tJotte , his last work , just produced at
the Palais Itoyal , was announced fully
three days before the author had in
tended ; ho left the theatre , went home
intending to make still moro changes
the ne\t day , and slept with an easy
mind ; at IB u'elock tlio following morning -
ing ho read the announcement of the lirst
performance of his piece for that Highl
and nearly had a lit. lie was as nervous
as n maiden over her iirst ball , or a bride
over the set of her wedding gown. Poor
Meilhac ! Ilo will never gel ever this
feeling , were ho to write forcvar , and
live at least two thousand years. Ho Is
very rich , but high play thins his ox-
checquer. lie gives to every one , unit
his heart is as generous as his lyrics , A
celebrated writer &aid to me : "What do
you lliink Modhao's royalties wore last
your on his plays. On an avonigc over
torty thousand francs a month. " Starv

but never regretting. Uvory object had
n history , every picture some sweet recol

cord of some inimitable achievement.
It would lauo a volume to describe
the pretty flat ; the drawing room in red
and oriental colors , lavish in decoration ,
then madamo's own room , hung in neb
yellow satin , with an air of grandeur that
would not be amiss in n royal appartment.
Hv the way , there is something else in

torical ; Marie-Antoinette's own dressing
table , cat in ono solid piece of rook crys
tal , cut. carved , and embellished until it
looks hue a piece of enchanted turnituro.
The glass in Us silver frame is equally
brilliant , nnd 1 told Madame Patti that if
1 hail such a toilet or mirror , 1 would
upend all my time before the one and
naturally looking into the other.
While I tun "piiaUing of artists let mo
mention another ono , and this one an
American , Henry Uishing. Ilo does not
sing but he paints ; paints -now don't bo
curious , 1 am getting to it fast , he painti
neither fools , frills , nor ( lowers , but
cattle. In fact his talent is such that ono
day he will be America's Jionhcur. For
give the pmiblor but remember the pun.
Henry llisbing , if 1 mistake not , has a
line future bcloro him , for ho has great
natural giftd , which have been strength
ened by an admirable and thorough
technical training. Mr. liisbing was
born in the Quaker City about twenty-five
years ago. He studied there in the line
arts acadeiry , and by Iho advice of John
Sartain , a celebrated engraver , did Illus
trating work for the Aldnie Press , the
Art Journal , and other publications. The
Appletons gave him their American
Homos to illustrate , and ho made u
brilliant success with that borics.
In 1B70 he came abroad , studied in
the royal academy of Munich , thence
went t'o Hrussels , where ho found the
celebrated American animal painter. J.
II. L. do Haas. In ISSIJ he studied at
Paris , with V. do Vmllefroy , and the fol
lowing year had two fine .studies hung on
the lino'at the Salon. The Versailles
Society of Arts has just awarded him n
first-class medal for one of the tincsl
bits of cattle painting I have ever seen.
At Mr. Tooth's late exhibition in London ,
Air. Uisbing was again represented by lu
the Polders. The Saturday Review , in
speaking of the exhibition , mentions Mr.
liisbing's picture along with the works of
Meissonnicr , lienjamin Constant , and
one other artist , whose name 1 do not re
call , and says : "These four works Seem
to us the cream of the gallery. "
Mr. liihhinc is at work upon a largo
canvas , which ho will send to the Salon ot
1887. The composition is splendid in
conception and not without a comical
vein ; a powerful bull , standing near
others of its kind , is utilizing a rustic
gate for the unpoctic , but necessary
pastime of scratching his neck. HP does
it so vigorously and well , ihut to see him
is to feel the immediate nccci sity of
well iigitfiting tno surface of your skin.
It would be funny if , like a yawn which
sets everybody yawning , to look upon
this picture should sot everybody scratch
ing. Mr. P.ishing's hlu-iio is > tilled with
charming bits , and 1 spent a delightful
hour there yesterday. It is in a tiny shed
in Neuilly , and when you gut to the
studio you arc very near the stars : but , if
I am not mistaken , the going to ECO our
American IJonlieur will .some day be ono
of the things to do in Paris.
In spite of reports to Iho contrary , Mrs
James Hrown Potter will go upon the
stage ; 1 can't tell how many people have
said to mo : "Have you seen Airs. James
Itrown Pottery Do toll nm what who is
like ; and is she really as beautiful as they
sayv" To which I say : "Yes , 1 have
seen the lady a great many times , and
she is all that the world gives her credit
of being. As to beauty well , hero is her
picture , so that yon may judge for your-
bclf. I myself think her ono of the pret
tiest woman l have over scon. Mrs. Potter -
tor If a trillo above medium height , is
very slight , beautifully made , and , oven
in her most studied altitude , seems to bo
tliu very incarnation of grace and harmo
nious life. Her hands are tiny ; she moves
them slightly but always well and
her carriage is of remarkable suppleness.
1 don't remember to have over scon an
American woman walk with suoh ease.
Her face Ah I now we are coming to it
her face is like a tuir young llower lifting
its head to the HUH. It is small , oval ,
clear out and wonderfully mobile. It is
lit up by a pair of starry , hazel cyr-s that
look straight at you , and which by their
depth and determination strike nin ax
being able to look as fearlessly at any
thing or anybody. Her hair is a tunny
brown and crowns her diminutive head
in tlio prettiest way possible ; her mouth
is small , her teeth white nnd even , and
her complexion perfectly colorless , %
which BuitH her eyes and adds to her
fragile American beauty. 1 think ,
houovor , that ono of her
chief beauties lies in her
personal charm. Wore I an Kngligh-
man , 1 should say of her thai she is ono
of the most "fetching' ' women I've ever
known. As to her tnlt-n' , that is un 1M
doubted , and aftcrher I.oi , don social and
artistic success , there is every reason to
expect that , if HIIO does go upon thn stage ,
she will make a grant .success. Messrs ,
Lipnincott are just bringing out her
hf/ol : , which is a compilation , with notes ,
of u ehoicn selection of authors , called
My Iteoitallons , and signed "Cora Unni-
liaVt Potter. " Mrs. Potter will probably
iilny in London oarlv next spring , and it
is not tit all unl'lioly ' , in a now part.
