Now York Sun : Will yon kindly an
swer n few questions In your columns , of
a to many , on the subject of .Now
i calls ? Should a lady have n ser

should n visit lat before thu visitor is in
/ ; vited to the icficshmcnt table , nnd what
would be very nice for lunch served
without wine ? Would Vienna eolleo nnd

propriety , nml is it proper to say when

Now Years , to udd "January 2d for la-
dlesi" 1 should boglad to give a day for
ladies to call , and please inform mo on
this point and the others , nnd oblige.
A YOWNIS Hotisiicnii'iit. : : :
Now Year's calls are u subject of per
ennial Interest , and we enter upon their
renewed discussion with satisfaction. Wo
"Vhould say that unquestionably the ser
vant ought to answer thu bell. If that
were not done it isdillicutt to see how the
callers could get in. At houses where a
great many callers are expected n ser
vant is sometimes .stationed nt the door ,
who , upon the first sound of a foot upon
tlio slops prepares to save the visitor the
trouble of ringing the bell by opening the
door for him. But if the servant is needed
for other duties , she or ho should always
answer the bell when it rings.
The conduct of the hostess can not bo
laid down with such rigidity. She must
decide when to invite her guest to oat or
drink according to circumstances. If
xlioro be butouevisitor.and ho engages in
l , ) 1"tioularly agreeable conversationthero
ifriTo necessity of breaking it at any par
ticular time. She can let him run on
with his charming talk until it shows
signs of llagging , and the oiler of re-
ft cfhmonts then may cause its relnrlgora-
lion and continuation. Again , if the
guests bo more in number than the hostess
or her friends receiving with her can at
tend to , the refreshment table can bo
very appropriately brought in to help Iho
ciileitainment , and a few minutes attar
the entry of the guests would not bo lee
short n time to bring it into play.
lu icgard to : i substitute for wine , wo
can speak with greater certainty and
conviction that the answer will safely
apply to all circumstances. Coll'co or
chocolate would bo eminently proper ,
and , indeed , wo would recommend it
with all fervor ; for the use of wino at the
Ncw Year's reception is but a relic of the
aimless and ill-advised gnnerosity and
opoii-handodiiess of our ancestors , nnd
should not bo adhered to by the women
of the present day. Of course , there are
very practical reasons against the use of
wine , as the experience of many Now
1 car's ' hostesses would conlinn. But
wine in the middle of the day is a sort of
abomination anyway. Six o clock , when
the visitors who have mudu many calls ,
inny perhaps bo bonolited by n little
"Hmulant , and made moro acrccablo for
ytiho calls of the evening , is the earliest
\'iour ' when it hhould be served. lint it is
better not to have wine at all.
In regard to this young housekeeper's
suggestion of adding to her ordinary
Jsow Year's announcement the .statement
that she would receive "ladies on Janu
ary 2 , ' ' wo would say that U is perfectly
proper for her to appoint iv day for the
reception of visitors of both hexes , but
our opinion is that January 2 would not
bo a good day for the purpose. Slio her
self would bo tired after her exertions of
the day before , and doubtless so would
most of her friends. Let it bo some other
day in January. Then may tlio occasion
be most agreeable !
Omnlia Social Circles.
Society bus had its hands full the past
week , witli attending iho opera and giv
ing due attention to parties. The whirl
has been so breathless as to be fatiguing
and the end of the week with its ono day
of relaxation is welcomed as a halting
place , wherein tlio rounders may
gather up their forces for another
plunge. Itccoptions still maintain their
own , and the men are beginning to com
plain of being left out in the cold. Last
week they cot oven by letting Iho belles
co to the opoi a with their parents , their
big brothers or some accommodating
cousin , while they sent llowors to the op-
* urn bingors , and cultivated their ucqualn
taueo between acts. Anything that ha1
the allurement of novelty is better In the
mind of the Omaha youth than thn girls
he has been dancing with every season
for time unknown , und usually people ol
tho.stago mo such bright companionable
people that contact with them is bracing
and leaves pleasant impressions that are
not.Mion clhiced.
