Now Year's calls are a subject of per
ennial interest , and we enter upon liieir
renewed discussion with satisfaction. We
3 'Vliould say that unquestionably the ser
vant ought to answer the bell. If that
were not done it isdilllcult toseo how the
callers could get in. Al houses where a
great many callers are expected a ser
vant is sometimes stationed at tiio door ,
who , upon the first sound of a fool upon
the stops prepares to save the visitor the
trouble of ringing the boll by opening tlio
door for him. But if the servant is needed
for other duties , she or ho should always
answer the boll when it rings.
The conduct of the hostess can not bo
laid down with such rigidity. She must
decide when to invite her guest to eat or
drink according to circumstances. If
v'iero ' bo but one visitor.and ho engages in
ivtionlarly agreeable conversationthere
is lib necessity of breaking it at any par
ticular timo. She can let him run on
with his charming talk until it siiows

guests ha more in number than the hostess
or her friends receiving with her can at
tend to , the refreshment table can bo

In regard to a substitute for wine , wo
can speak with greater certainty and
conviction that tlio answer will safely
apply to all circumstances. Coffee or

In regard to this young housekeeper's
miggi'Htion of adding to her ordinary
Isow Year's announcement the .statement
that she would receive "ladies on Janu
ary 3 , " wo would say that it is perfectly
proper for her to appoint tx day for the
reception of visitors of both sexes , but
our opinion is that January 1 ! would not
bo a good day for tlio purpose. She her-
fiolf would bo tired after her exertions of
tlio day before , and doubtless .so would
most of her friends. Let it bo some other
day in January. Then may the occasion
be most agreeable !
Omnlin Social Circles.
Society has had its hands full the past
week , with attending iho opera and giv
ing duo attention to parties. The whirl
has been so breathless as to be fatiguing
and the end of the week with its ono day
of relaxation is welcomed as a halting
place , wherein Iho round era may
gather up their forces for another
plungo. Receptions still maintain their
own , anil the men are beginning to com
plain of being loft out in the cold. Last
week they trot oven by letting the belles
go to the opoia with their parents , their
big brothers or some accommodating
cousin , while they sent llowors to the op
's1 era singers , and cultivated their acquain
tance between acts. Anything that has
the allurement of novully is better in the
mind of the Omaha youth than the girls
bo has been dancing with every season
for time unknown , and usually people of
thu stage are such bright companionable
people that contact with them is bracing
and leaves pleasant Impressions' that are
not soon effaced.
