JJOO Years Afo.
Kansas City Times : Mr. M. 1 $ . Whit-
field , of L'uru , Mob. , one of the curly.set
tlers of that state , was at the Union do !
pobthis morning , on ionic iioino ttftur si
visit to ielati\us in Missouri anil this
city. Mr. Whitlield is eighty-one jcars
of age , but is still hale and Iieaitj and ,
it is bttid , can still thiow almost any of
tin ) degunoiatu yonnii men of thib SIKC in
an old-timo "side-hold" wrestle. Ho htts
been a ( unions traveler and has many
curious incidents to relate of the c.trly
hettluuiuius in the western country.
Among other things Mr. Whitlield has
in bis possession a letter written IWO
years : tco whioh describes a terriblu
eaithmiaKc all along the coast of what is
now South Carolina , and whioh occurred
about that time. The letter is written in
the quaint I'loneli of the peiiotl and
vividly describes the biicccssion of caith
waves \vhic'i ' passed over the lantl day
after day anil the terror of the inhabi
tants. The missive was penned by Mr.
'
Whitiield's and-uncle' who
grcat-preat-gi - ,
was a compatriot ot Jean Uobault ,
who made the Hist attempt to
coloni/c the Carolina , ami i elates to
an occurrence which happened some
twenty years borons the date ot the. letter.
The letter is datett 1588. The taets given
except that they evidently refer to an
cailhqutiKC of long continuance and
gicat foico are very meagre. It is prob
able however that the earthquake was ac
companied by tidal waves which swept
the coast , as the letter speaks of the ter
rible storms at sea which prevented the
colonists from setting sail for Franco or
for St. Augustine , Via , , whuie there were
other French settlements. The letter 13
supposed to contain now and valuable in-
foimillion on this subject , anil a tiausla-
tion was made while Mr. Whitlield wis
in this city , and scut to .Professor
1'ioctor , the astronomer. A slight
reference to history , in connection
with the data thus furnished shows that
Jean Hcbatilt had founded a colony on
the coast of South Carolina as curly as
1502. A foil was built not tar fiom the
present site of Chai lesion and named
Fort Charles in honor of the then king of
France. Alter many vicissitudes Uu-
bault again lauded in the Carolinas to
succor another colony on the St. John
river , which they called Tort Caroline , in
1503. For some reason ho set sail with
all the remaining of tlm colony for St.
Augustine , Fl.i. "Terrible storms , " says
the chronicle. , ' 'arosn and the whole
squadron was wrecked on the coast of
Florida not far from Capo Cana\oral. "
It was many years before the Carolinas
were ngain settled by white men ,
