Ho took her aooard an outgoing train , nnd finally persuaded her to marry him. She consented , and as BOOH as limy were far enough away to elude pursuit , the ceremony was pur- formed. notwithstanding the tact that the girl lacked live years of tlio necessary ago. For : i time everything went smoothly , and Ottwald treated his Bgirl- wife with tins utmost consideration. After a year or two of marriage , how ever , hi ; became cruel , neglected her for other women , and altogether made her lift ) unythinir but n pleasant one. The young girl bore this as long as she could , until about a year ago , when she con cluded to procure a divorce fiom her husband The separation was formally decreed by law , and several months ago JUrs. O. , with her two small children , the custody of wnlch had been granted her , cnmc to Omaha to live. She procured work in ono of the hotels , but soon gave up the position to go ono of the road houses on Sixteenth street , as housekeeper. Hoforo doing this she placed her two children IM charge of the Sisters of St. Mary , at the convent on St. Mary's avenue. In the meantime the divorced husband , Ottwald who had long been awaiting an opportunity to secure possession of the children , c : > mo to Omaha. He learned in gome way the whereabouts of tlio chil dren , and determined to obtain them. Ho wont to the convent , introduced him- Belt ns a photographer and said that ho would like to take pictures of the two little children whom he had seen playing about thn grounds. The histers readily agreed ; the follow went off with the chil dren , and of course never returned. In the meanwhile the ihothor , unaware that her children were no longer in the convent , had been drifting lower and lower. From the road house she catno down town and entered n house of ill fame on Capitol avenue. From this place she wont to Laura MacKs' ' house. It was in the latter place that she was found by a detective named \Valkor , who was en gaged in tracing down her divorced hus band , wanted on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses. The de tective learned the story of the woman , nnd being kind hearted , enlisted himself in her behalf. Ho communicated with her mother , telling her of her daughter's ' whereabouts. The mother who had lost all trace of her erring daughter hurried at once to Omnha , and with the aid of Mrs. Clark , succeeded in inducing the girl to leave the dan of infamy , oho went homo with her mother yesterday morning win hearty and apparently sincere promisesof re form on her lips. It should bo mentioned that the two children which werejstolen by Ottwald from the convent wore recovered and placed in charge of the grandmother. Otwald is now in the county jail await- iiiE trial. Yesterday morning , after a number of false announcements , Jay Gould ar rived in town , His train steamed in over the Missouri Piieiliu from Lincoln , nnd consisted of engine 257 , a dcer-liko looking machine , a baggage car full of nothing except a couple of sable porters ; the special car San Francisco and thu private car Convoy. When the train coma to n stop , the Gould party disembarked nnd was iinmo- dlatnly surrounded by n host of curious people , who diligently inquired ns to which of thu gentlemen was the biggest man in the crowd. Katu Slioiighroo commenced suit in the district eourt yesterday afternoon through her attorney , Parke Godwin , Ks < l , for n divorce from her husband , Patrick Shoughroe. The petition seta forth that the plaintiff was married to the defendant in the year IhSl. For the past year she lias been treated by her husbnhd with the utmost cruelty. The various nets of inhuman conduct culminated last Thursday when ho knocked her down and beat her with a potato maMier. For this he is now in jail awaiting trial. Mis. Shouuhroo lecites in her petition many dill'ereut charges which , if true , prove that her husband is moro of a brute than a man. She snjs that she is dependent entirely on her own exertions for a living , and has been supporting herself and Mr. S. for venrs past by keeping boarders , Her husband's con duct , it is alleged , has been of .such a charnc'er ' ns to drive away most of her boaulcrs. He is in the Habit of comin" to the table nud carrying on n Urndo of profanity and vulgaritv.whlch was as dis gusting as it is uncalled-for. Many acts of petty meanness are charged against Shoughroe. On one occasionit is alleged , he came into tliu dining-room and delib erately upset the table on which were dishes and food. At another time ho took n pair of shoes which his wife had just purchased and cut them to pieces with a knite. In addition to praying for n divorce Mrs. S. asks for tin order of injunction to prevent her husband from disposing of their household furniture. Caring Tor the Outcast. Airs. Geo.W. Clark , of the Buckingham homo , who is state superintendent of the work of saving fallen women , is trying to secure permanent quarters for this class of unfortunates. The Huekingham homo is too small to admit of more than ono or two of these women being cared for nt n time. The work is one of great and growing importance , nnd Mrs. Clark has been hampered in iu prosecution by the lack of a suitable home. She , with others interested in the matter , is moving to secure the buildings .south of the Buck ingham for this purpose. It is to bo hoped that success will crown her ef forts. Switched Off. Uoss the fireman on ono of the switch engines in the B. & M. yards , found that lie had been victimized by n fellow named Wilson , who had stoppcd'at his house , 1123 Pierce btreet , and known as the dude switchman. About midnight Sunday night the burg lar alarm attached to the front door of Gen Dnndy's residence commenced to ring vigorously. Mrs. Dandy , who was alone in the house , was awakened , nnd seizing her revolver , went to the window and fired six or seven shots. She succeeded In driving on" the intruders , if any such wore prowling about the premises nnd nlso thoroughly aroused the neighbor hood.
