impetus given them by the Amoiican
society they generally got a hold by the

the nature of the dance is such as to
commend it to the taste then prevailing
in such matteis.
At tlio last meeting hold in this city ,
some two weeks ago , a large number o
now dances vveio brought betoro it by
masters from all p.uts ot the eountiy
Many of these were condemned , or lather
dismissed , as lacking elements of popu

dances vveio adopted ami will bo taught
tlunnir the coming season. The fo.-tu-
mite combinations of musical stops are
'Tlio ' Amoi Gavotte " "Tho
lean , Col urn-
bH , " and the "Octagon. "
"Tho American Gavotte" is unqnob
tiouably the most original of the three ,
and is in Us natuic a peculiar coinbina
tion ot the waitami polka. The writer
iccontly had a chat with one of the oltlcst
and best known dancing masters in this
city on the subject of ( lancinir m general
unit "Tho Guv otto" in particular , and
was ircatod to a practical illustration of
the buauties of the new ligure. The venerable
erablo master of hi.s art donned patent
leather and on the smoothly polished
lloor ot his own academ > proceeded to
lightly trip through the intricate stop * of
"Tho Gnotto. . " The advcntuious par
ticipator first takes three short , gliding
bteps to ono side , then walks one step far
ther in the same diiectiou , and tmallv ,
turning a three step polka half turn , Is
ready to recommence the movement.
The weakness of "tho Gavotto" is the
walking step , Otheiwlso tlio dance is
very pretty and graceful , but the walk
i ing stop , being so much wlovvor than lint
other stops in the ligure , must necessarily
cause confusion. It aNo tends to bleak.
the time , and w lion the member ? of the
il. society practiced the daueo in Hrookljn
the musicians declared that it could not
. bo danced in 1 t time , as was intended by
its originator.
The daueo itself is nnquostionablv
novel , is a pleasing variation of the
waitami polka , and would foim a h
suable addition to the small number of
lound dances now sanctioned by usage.
Hut it must be danced to polka time and
the walking step in some way eliminated
01 bridged over or the tlauco will prove
a failure. At lean so the "profes-or"
toltl the writer , and his foity live jearo of
oxpouonco ought to qualify him to de
cide.
"Tho Columbia" and "Octagon" are
old dances levived and reaiianged , and
are but slightly dilloreul fiom what they
were fifty joais ago. The foimer greatly
resembles the wall/ and could se.iit-uly
bo distinguished from it by an inexperi
enced poison. "Tho Octagon" is a
quadrille arranged for eight couplon , and
ns several ot its variations are catching
and remarkably itrotty , it bids fair to become -
come n populai iiauco. Aside fiom thcso
new dances the old time favorites will of
course remain in vogue , the new dances
merely being accepted us novelties on
trial. _

Hfio Mis , 1'lorcnco aioso and gave the
opening stanza , imitating the gestuios
and broken vernacular ot early childhood
to perfection , endinp with a funny little
chuckle that was irresistible.
She went on : "To my great surprise it
