the HKK.I CATTLE Although the receipts
for the week are less than last week there
was a slow , weak feflinc In tr.ule to-day.
The fact Is that the proportion of good and
pretty eooU native cattle Is really much
larger than last week , owinc to lighter sui > -
jlies of j.'rair.icrs. Last Saturday one car of
oleuant l.COO pound cuttle sold late to a New
York buyer at S5.50 , and owing to the lateness
of the hour the sale was put In jestenlay
without comment Such cattle arc not only
scarce , hut It Is only a very limited number
of such animals that are wanted. I'erhnps
another carload or two of such cattle could
not be sold for anything like the money.
To-day there was a limited demand for coed
choice cattle , and prices were about the same
as > esterday.
Interior to fair kinds wcro slow sale , but
at about the same price. There was some
Inquiry for choice heavy cattle on export ac
count A pentleman just visiting here from
Knclnnd thinks there ought to be at least S15
to S30 profit In exporting cattle at the present
price. This estimate Is probably liberal , but
exporters" have been tfoinc comparatively
well lately. Late trains were heavily laden
with cattle and the market to-day closed
quite dull and weak. The closing prices to
day were 15ig20c lower than last Friday on
such cattle as sold at about $4.GO(3-i. ( 0. Ship
ping steers. 1350 to 1500 lus , Si.ftxss.SO : 1200
to 1350 Ibs. S4.00ft-l.75 : 1WO to 1200

For the week thus far the receipts are about
4,000 less than during the corresponding time
last week. The market to-day was generally
not quotablr different.

1SOOO last Thursday , making about b.ioOO for
the week so far against 09,000 for the same
time ln.st week. The demand was fair , but
prices were about 5c off , making a diop of
about 20c for the week so far. One or two
lots of fancy heavy sold early at 53.10305.

5-l.fiOi34.70. Light sorts are merely nominal.

compared to the slave of Golconda , who ,
castme aside all that is worthless , pre
serves only the pure gems.1 It is to bo
'eared ' that in the present day the great
est number of readers belong to the first
of these classes. The amount read is
something almost fabulous , but the re
sults are comparatively trilling. Volume
xfter volume is perused , pamphlets and
.inpers . are mentally consumed , but
: he stores of knowledge are
not perceptibly increased. This
charge lies not only against those who
read secular works ; it applies to too great
an extent to those who read the scrip
tures c.nd other treatises upon things
divine. Lord Bacon once said that
"readme makes a full man. " lie could
not have meant the kind of reading that
is now too prevalent. The omnivorous
readers , the readers who skim through
page after page , the butterfly readers
who taste some flowers of literature here
and there , but never settle down to a
resolute extraction of the sweets , arc
toitnd at the year's end. after all their
reading , not more "full1' intellectually ,
but ouener more foolish than before.
Why is that ? Because in these express
days the reading has been done as quickly
as possible , and because what is read one
hour is buried beneath a heap of mul
tifarious mutter the next hour. But if a
man read upon a prudent plan , if ho
digest what he mentally receives , his
reading will become a delightful source
of very extensive information and sound
wisdom.
Heading should be in moderation. It
is possible to devour whole libraries and
yet learn nothing. It is said that Miss
Martincau often read in one hour no
more than a jngle page of a good book.
An eminent divine and author is said to
have had but three books the Bible ,
Josephus'works and Ci mien's Concord
ance. A celebrated French author being
laughed at for the smallness of his library ,
replied : "Ah , when I wanted a book 1
made it. " On the other hand , Madame
do Stael-Holstein is said to have devoured
COO novels before she was fifteen years of
age , and to have read those 000 in three
months on an average six each day !
Louis XVI.while imprisoned for a period
of five months and seven davs. read 157
volumes , or one book a day. Such liter
ary gluttony coultl have left little good
results. Too much reading is us injuri
ous to the mind ai too ranch feeding is to
the body.
