Atlbo Mnrquniul TcllR of tlic Mode of Ijlfc of thn Most Auuotio Itollgioim Order. A Washington correspondent writes : Abbe Marquand , who has come to this city from tiieTrappistinonastary at Geth- .semane , Ivy. , to look after a situ for anew now monastery , has caused a stir in religion ligion- , circles here. Everybody is anx ious to see a representative of the famous order whose vigorous mode of life has been the admiration of tlic pious and a subject lor incredulity and derision to worldly people. A great many false hoods nave been told about tlfo order , too. by writers who were not satislied with its really curious practices1 but must needs let imagination add others. From the abbe himself , who has been a Trap- jii'-t for nearly thirty years , the following information was obtained. Surely it con tains enough things which seem incred ible without calling in imagination to aid. aid.The The order of La Trappc was founded in the fourteenth century for the pnrpixo of alibi-ding an asylum to repentant criminals and other men who desired to expiate their sins by a life-long punish ment of the llesh. Up to tlio Ficticli revolution the order was eonlined to France , Switzerland ami Italy. During the ascendency of Robespierre the Trappists were ordered to leave Franco , and many ot them came to the now world , founding monasteries in Canada , at ( lethsemauo Ky. , ami , more recently , at Dnbuqiio , la. Their members have increased very slowly in this country , but having several more brothers than are needed at the existing monasteries they have determined to build another one and think of selecting Washington as the site. When a glance is taken at their mode of life litrle wonder will be felt at their slow growth in number. In the first place , the Trappift makes vows of poverty , chastity , and obedience for life , a.s do all priests of the Catholic church. Then he agrees to bury himself in a monastery and work at any occupation , however menial , to which his superiors may assign him. The applicant for a Trupnist's cell is thoroughly tested before he takes these vows. He must for several years go through the hardships which the abbe recounted to your correspondent , as follows : "Wo rise at 12 midnight. As we always wear our cassocks , there is no delay about dressing , and we are in the chapel by 13:15. : Then we sing the matins and hymns until 2 o'clock , after which them is high mass lasting until 4. Private meditations and pious reading foliow till daylight , when all the monks disperse to their occupations. At our monastery in Kentucky every brother is a mechanic , or does work of some kind , so that , with our 200 acres of land , we manage to support ourselves without any outside assistance , and can even help the poor. Some of us are carpenters , some blacksmiths , some do the necessary tailoring and a few ate employed as cooks and housekeepers. \Vlien'you understand tiiatworai.se our own crcps , grind our grain , cook our food , make our clothes , and keep our lit tle colonv in operation unaided , you will confess that we are not what some people call 'la/.y monks. ' "Work is kept up from daylight till 0 p. in. , and during all this time absolute silence must be preserved. The only words spoken are the 'Memento Morions' ( Remember , thou wilt ilie ) , which is the morning greeting. Meals take up little of our time. Before -going to work wo get a slice of bran-bread and a eup of water. At noon wo dine oft' vegetables and milk. At 0 o'clock another collation of bread and water is served. Yes , wo are strict vegetarians , not for the pur pose of health , but to deny the animal appetite. I might mention'though , that the rules of the order allow thn use of meat once in seven years when Christ mas comes on Friday but few of us take advantage of tjiis relaxation. What is the effect of the diotv Well you may have heard that recent statistics in France show that as a class the Trappists are thu long est lived men in that country. Wo gen erally die of old ago , except where cluonio diseases were contracted be fore entering the monastery , ami e\en then the lives of the sulferers are greatly prolonged by the mode of living. Ah the necessary doctoring i.s donu by a brother who was once a drug clerk , and who binds fractures anil plas ters cuts to our satisfaction. 1 have not seen a doctor for morn than ten yeais , After our day's work is done and the col lation of bread and water i.s taken we retire - tire to our rooms , or rather cells , for rest. These cells are ten feet by four , and are furnished with a wooden bed and a wash'itaud. 1 have read stories about our sleeping in eollln.s. Those are not exactly true. Our bed is a big plank , like a eollin in outline , but without the rising sides and cuds. Wu use mattresses or * ticks and covering only in eold weather. Oar cassocks are never taken oil'oNccpl when cleanliness requires a chaiiiru of clothes. As a hard bed is not a comfortable bed , you may imagine that wo are not loath to rise when the bull rings at midnight for matins. "In regard lo our apparel , wo eon- tiium to wear rough hair shirts , which are all very well , especially in > vann weather. Our cassocks are heavy woolen in sum mer ami alpaca in winter , Clean linen collars are donned every morning. Since wo liavu not facilities for making boots and shoes wo mtiat content ourselves with sandals , which are , after all , quite as comfortable and serviceable. "Some of our rules , outside of the d-iily routine , may also seem unnecessarily severe to people in the world , but we are satislied with them. When n relative , however clone , of any monk dies , all are called into the chapel , the announcement is made that one of thu brothers has lost ti father , mother or other relative , and all pray for the soul of the ilccuasod..Tho object of concealing the name is to pre vent grief .and the recalling of worldly tilings from interfering with the tenor of .each man's life. When a , monk himself dies lie is buried with pompous religious services , and after prayers and masses , the big record book" IB tnkcn down from bclilml tbc altar and ft ] red cro s placed opposite the name of tlie' < lcp.irtcu. "Are many Americans applying for admission to the onler-- Hot many , I must say. Most of our recruits come from France and other Catholic coun tries of Europe. I fear | lwt Americans lack the intense steal and -religious fervor nccossnry to sustain a Trappist in Ills hard life , although tbo American Cath olics , as a body , arc regarded as the most faithful children of the church. Yes , wo have a recompense for our hardships. It is not of the worldly s6rr.ho\vevcr. ' Not withstanding all our boitily sufferings , we arc hanpier , perhaps , than the mo.st luxuriously-fixed people in the world. Physical pains are almost forgotten in contemplation of heaveiilv joys which are sure to follow a life devoted entirely to God's service. When the body is wean 'lie ' soul is comforted and the mind tranquil witli the thought of the transi tory ills of tllo world and the everlasting rewards of heaven. Yes , we are happy and salislied with the world , \\liv , then , is not the world satisllod with us , and why does it not cease to call us la/y , good-for-nothing monks ?
