the llKK. | WIIKAT Wlioat on 'change was
nctl\o nnd higher. A Rood deal of the free
scllinc last night was due to rumor * that sev
eral local houses \\cro In trouble , but the rn-
rnorsnro\ed groundless. ' 1 IIP bulls had the
call on news , too. The operators who ilcuio
for statistics , undismayed hy their failure to
get within gunshot of the facts last week ,
put out estimates nf the doorcase In the
wheat visible around 3,000,000 bushels again ,
nnil footed exports from the Atlantic ports ,
Including Montreal , at 2,000,000 bushels.
Crop reports were received In abundance
which claimed that the outlook was not by
any means as rosy ns It had been painted.
Then two utokcrs , who bought hunlly , gave
tin the namoof.lackCudahy to the purchases.
The theory on which h < ! operated M cald to
have been that lower prices would ha\o to
ensue uiilcbs tin- wheat went out faster or
BOIIIOaccident happened to thufitowing crops ,
nnd his co\erlniiromptly ] follow edicporls of
drouth In the northwest. A numbei of K'tod '
buying orders were received fiom X w \ ork.
nnd were nerompauled hy dlsti.itehes that
Chlcairo parties Imd "got out of St. Paul. "
Clenninces from that port also weioIM.OCO
bushels , which helped matters out n little.
The buying fever , however , was conhued
mulnly to small Hhortxand traders who were
lifiald to RO over Sunday and Monday with
open trade * . The chapu-i ot aechlents was
ng.ilnst them ; cables came In lower hut there
were lar o orders to buy at lower limits.
Values hero advanced Ic , but when the tnuio
urgent demands were .satlHlied , eased oir ,
Cloning at n gain ot % c slnee last night.
The bulls now tlguro that the vlsltilo sup
ply will go down eonsldcrablv below the
80.000,000 bushel line beforeIt receives Its
minimum , which Is usu.illy the last Of .Inly.
3f Monday's statement should , as expected ,
put stocks In sight down around : ! T > , ocoiMj , )
bustii'K thcro would seem to bo a good basis
for this reasoning. Some orders wcie n-
celved to-day lor July and August delivery on
foreign account. 1'ilces are now on n work
ing basis , nnd the piemlum on long futures
less excessive In thu late of good cmn pios-
pects.
COHN Juno corn was a quarter of a cent
off to-day , but the delened futures ruled
nbout steady. Keceipts were lame , and some
predicted that Monday's statement would
show a small incicaso In the visible supply.
I'ltovistoxs Provisions were ( julet but
slightly higher. Packers seemed to think the
heavy iccelpts of hogs hod been about dis
counted.

Trade llevlcw.
A slight improvement is noticeable in
home lines of wholesale trade the past
week. Collections tire better and coun
try merchants are meeting their obliga
tions Avith moio promptness. Corn and
hoys are moving more fieely , and money
is not so close with the fanners. The
produce markets have shown consider
able activity during the past few elajs.
The tendency on most kinds of country
produce is downward , lluttcr , which
constitutes a very large proportion of the
receipts , is slow sale at any price. The
general quality ot the butter received
averages better than usual at this
time of the year. It is so
dillicult for the ordinary con
sume ! in discover cieameiy butter liom
buttciine , that the people aio afraid to buy
creameiy butter tor tear that they will get
the imitation Instead of the genuine article ,
and licnco It is almost impossible nt present
to sell a pound of creamery buttei. Choice
croameiv butter has been ollered as low as
Kc ! per Ib w ithout finding n bu > cr. The egg
mat kefls weak and lower pilccs would not
bo sin prising. The poultry market Is netUc ,
but pilces are tending downward , especially
on old low Is. Themis no sale for potatoes
woitb mentioning , and no fncomagcmcnt
for the shipper. Other lines of produce
remain about bte.uly.
