POTATOIIS Tne market Is in a very unfa
vorable condition. There have been several
carloads received dtu Ing the past low days.
There Is very little Inqniiv for potatoes , and
dculeis are not able to dispose of them
ii'adlly. The \eiy choicest assorted stock
can not bo quoted ovcriliftitlOc and slow sale
at that. It Is Impossible to sell car lots , and
commission men aie compelled to sell them
out in small lots. Local farmeis arc bilnglng
in a good many which tends to lower the
u holesale price.

Connor , the great Iiulinn lighter , wns a
most welcome guest ° f Capt , II. K , Pal
mer last ni ! ; lit nnd loft this morning for
his home in ban Francisco. Gun , Connor
is iv veteran of the Mexican war , and
draws a full captain's pension for wounds
received at liuona Vistti. He was com
missioned colonel of the Third California
infantry on the 20th of September , 1801 ,
In ISU'3 ho commanded the Utah expedi
tion of California and Nevada troops
| unt to quell the Mormons , who were
Kbout to secede. Connor , on his march
through Utah , gave out that he was on
ho was on his way to join the eastern
army , so the Mormons agreed to let
him pass unmolested. On the evening -
ing of liis arrival nt Salt Luke ho
pitched his tents on tlio. river Joidnn ,
whereupon Hrigliam Voting sent him a
mu&sngo stating that -ho had icceived a
revelation from the Lord ordering Con *
nor to move on , us ho wns camping on
holy ground , ( toil. Cylinur replied Mint
ho acknowledged the Lord as command-
rr-in-chlef and would move on at day
light. Accordingly before daybreak ne\t
morning liuncnu Connor inarched his
column throunh Salt I Lake city to the
tnno of "Yankee Doodle , " wakinc Hrig-
hain Yonngand liiftlO,0 < ) ONaiivoo Legion ,
which wai tlinii in camp under a regular
course of drill , from their peaceful slum
bers , and took a position on the blitn"
just above the city , whore camp Douglas
now stands. Hero ho planted his full
battery of artillery on the edge of the
bind' overlooking * the town. Hrigliam
Young thereupon hastily sent an olllcer
to order Conner to leave Mint place im
mediately , as their water supply passed
close to that blulV , Ho forgot , 'however ,
to say that ho had received any revelation
from the Lord to that ellect , and ( Jen.
Connor promptly replied Hint he had re
ceived orders from the Lord to remain
whore he was. To emphasi/.o his de
termination to do so , lie pent a solid shot
into Hrigliam Young's back yard to show
him Unit he could destroy great Salt Lake
City by u few such shots from his guns.
( tun. Connor then declared the city un
der martial law , and with his steady
nervy hand , stopped secession where it
stood and aveiled what must have
proven a disastrous Mormon war.
January StlMi , 1803 , ( ! en. Connor , with
only 'JCO California men , picked from his
Oiiiii'e command , after a two days' march
of lOo miles over mountains , dropped
upon the hostile Indians at Heaver Hiver
canon , and killed -121 of their number ,
returning to camp with Rotltccrs and 17
woundeil men , and To men badly frost
bitten , losing in all but 7 men , August
Sllth , 1805 , ho attacked an Indian village
on Tongue river and killou U0 ! Indians ,
captured (110 ( head of horses and all the
plunder of a camp of Arapahoe braves.
Cant. I'aimer and the late Capt. Frank
Norm of Columbus , in this state , were
with the general in this light. Capt.
Palmer was Ids adjutant general during
the .summer of 1805 , when Gen. Connor
commanded the district of the plains ,
17,000 troops on duty. Capt. Palmer wns
afterward quartermaster and commis
sary of the Powder river Indian expedi
tion , ami until yesterday had not seen his
chief for twenty-one years. It is need
less to .say the. general's visit was enjoyed
by his host.
