Stenograph io
Nuw York Telegraph : There are some
nmrvuls of stcnonrapliio reortinjr ) ) per-
fornieil in the senate and house each day ,
and about the ino t faseinnting si lit in
congress is to see these men eovcring
page after pa i ? with uitriiuis chavaetcrs
altunst as last as the eye can follow.
Kacli day The C'onsressiontil Hecortl
comes out with a verbatim report of the
proiM'ciUnirn of the last session. Not un-
IrequeiUjv The Hi-conl reaches the si/.e of
a good-si/ed hook , and to the uninitiated
the wonder is how the ton reporters sue
j'eetl in preparing such a mess of matter
in so short a time. It is : ill the result ot
u system which has < irown up with vears ,
anil which is well-nigh perfect. Tlieio
ure live stenographers in each brunch ,
and they hold thuir ollices .year afti'i-
year irrespective of the rise or tall of po
litical dynasties. The senate pays for
its reporting with a lump of $ ' . ' 5,000 for
for each year. The contract is made with
Mr. J. I ) . Murphy , who is acknowledged
to stand at the. head of the profession in
tliis country. Air. Murphy is a short ,
stout man , with iron-gray hair and full
beard. lie has a little desk in front of
the clerk's stand and does the greater
part of the senate reporting himself. Mr.
Murphy does his work ea-sily and with
out any apparent trouble. No matter
whether Mr. Heck ; or Mr. llawlcy , or
some of the other lightning talkers are
going ahead under lull pressure , or the
slow-spoken and ponderous Kvarts is
plowing along in debate , it is all the same
to Mr. Murphy. Hoigets all there is said.
The reporters in the senate sit at their
desks , because the chamber is a small one
and there is usually perfect quiet. In
the hoif-o , however , the live reporters Hit
hero and there with their note books ,
following this pr that speaker. The
chief of tlio house corps is. ) . J. McEl-
hone. Ho made , his reputation in the
famous debate upon the cleetorial-eount
bill. At the climax of tl.c debate , when
there were fully n doxen men speaking at
once , Mr. McLlhono jumped to his feet.
note-book and pencil in hand. lie did
not take his eye from the paper , but
when the scene had passed hu had every
word of it. The report in the next day's
Record was absolutely correct ; indeed
not an actor in that famous scene ever
complained that ho had been mi.squoted.
Mr. McKlhonc is a tall man , with a decid
edly Hibernian cast of features. His head
is small and round , and lus _ gray hair
stands straight up all over it. He is re
garded as the swiftest and most accurate
of all the house reporters. None of the
stenographers write out their notes. In
the house the men take "tricks" of ten or
iiftcon minutes each , at the expiration of
which they ru&h down stairs , when ! there"
arc a doxcu or nioro stenographers in
wailing. They read the debate as they
have taken it , and these assistants in
turn take it in shorthand and subse
quently reduce it in writing for the
printers. The house rcpoilcrs are paid
$5,000 , a year.
A man in Cambridge , Mass. , who was
arrested for swindling last week , has
spent $207,000 , left him by his father , in
the last seven years.
